our dan simons is there. dan? >> reporter: we're expecting a news conference in the next 15 minutes. where hopefully we'll get more information from federal investigators as they comb through the wreckage looking for clues as to what brought that plane down. in the meantime i want to introduce you to another eyewitness. this is bes bessi murphy, a nur far west virginia. what did you see? >> i was further away. i was in the pits area. at the point i did not see the actual impact. what i had heard was all call for medical personnel as they were asking for people to leave. so i responded, and when i got on the scene, they were quickly within just a couple of minutes from my time to get to the area, they already had the people triaged, had the ambulances available, had the situation pretty much under control. they still had people looking for families and friends, people were still in shock, so they were still trying to get people out of the area but as far as emergency responders, they had the situation pretty well u

this is going to be an extremely important witness for the prosecution. >> i asked dan simon earlier,ly revealed whether conrad murray would take the stand. but in your view, a case like this, how could he not take the stand? >> i think he's going to have to. because basically what they're doing is attacking his standard of care as a physician. they are saying this man did not do what she was supposed to do. so even though he is innocent until proven guilty under our legal system, the jury is still going to want to hear, because if they say michael took it himself, who was in that room that night, fred? dr. murray and michael jackson. so during that crucial time frame when something went terribly wrong, there were two players present. one of them is deceased. if we want to know what happened, we're going to have to hear from the other one. dr. murray will have to tell his side of the story. >> holly hughes, thanks so much. >> thanks. >> and of course, we'll continue to monitor the testimony in the trial and bring you live coverage here on cnn as the developments happen. for completely

joining us from reno now, dan simon. dan, what evidence has been uncovered?reporter: well, a few things. first thing i want to talk to you about, randi, we know from the pilot's own words before the crash the plane was modified substantially where the wingspan was actually reduced by about ten feet and according to the pilot he wasn't exactly sure how the plane would perform so there is a lot of speculation that maybe those modifications may have caused something to go wrong. but in the meantime the attention is squarely focused on the tail of the aircraft. videos and pictures show that during his flight a part of the tail actually broke off from the plane, fell to the ground. crews over the weekend when searching the debris field actually found what they believe is part of the tail. it will be shipped off to the ntsb lab for analysis. some memory cards were recovered. not sure if it is from the camera on the plane but will be analyzed, nonetheless. we know plane had a crude black box attached and wirelessly transmitted information to the flight crew. that's

. >> our dan simon is there for us in reno. dan, good morning again. have we learned any indication what possibly could have caused this? >> we really don't know at this point. what we know is that the aircraft picked up and rolled and just went down to the ground. at this point, it's pure speculation to hypothesize what happened here. they're coming to the scenes to look for clues. you have to wonder what made this. it appears that the plane disintegrated on impact. of course, we had a lot of people with cameras, a lot of people in the stands that could provide some eyewitness statements to investigators, but that will probably be critical of what we also know, t.j., is that this is a pilot who is very experienced, 74 years old. and participated in this air show since 1975. obviously, he knew what he was doing, not a crookky pilot. this world war ii vintage plane, you also may have to wonder whether or not the age of the aircraft may have played a role. but again, it's all speculation at this point, t.j. >> at this point, i guess it's speculation, but

our dan simon is in reno. what are you learning about this crash, dan? >> reporter: well, fred, there is a press briefing going on now. the death toll has climbed considerably. three people were said to have died from this crash. now the death toll has risen to nine. that coming from dave evans with the reno police department, who just spoke about it moments ago. take a look. >> 54 patients from the scene here to area hospitals. of those 54, hospitals reported two fatalities. we also have a total of seven fatalities we know of at this time on the tarmac including the pilot. 17 folks are still being treated at local hospitals. and a total of 24 have been treated and released. >> reporter: we have also learned that the ntsb walked the scene this morning. the investigators took a look at the wreckage. they also discovered this component that we have been talking about throughout the day which is called the elevator tab lift. there is some speculation that that's what may have caused the plane to go down. there is photographic evidence that shows a part of t

dan simon is standing by for now. dan, good morning. if you can, start by giving us the update. we talked about three dead and more than 50 injured. do those numbers still stand right now? >> reporter: that's what we understand, t.j. three dead, dozens injured. we're waiting for a press conference that should take place sometime later today. let me explain why i am. there's a hangar behind me. this is a place that stored some of those airplanes for the air show. obviously, a very somber mood here on the ground, but a feeling, t.j., that things could have been a lot worse. of course, today, investigators are going to be combing over the scene, trying to see what they can sort of look and examine. but given the fact that that airplane seemed to have disintegrated on impact, you wonder what kind of physical evidence there might be. but, of course, you had a lot of people with cameras, a lot of eyewitnesss. their testimony will be critical for investigators in trying to figure out what, in fact, happened. i want you to listen now to some of those witnesses who just scrambled in disb

>> dan simon is in reno. dan, tell us what investigators have found so far and how they're piecing together the puzzles of this mystery. >> reporter: fredricka, first of all, this was to be the final day of the event. there would be thousands of people in attendance behind me, but it is relatively quiet today. a few planes on the tarmac and they'll probably be leaving pretty soon. no doubt the economic loss to reno is in the tens of millions of dollars. we got a firsthand glimpse of what the crash scene looks like. there is a crater in the tarmac about three feet deep. it is eight feet wide. and the debris field is about an acre. so pretty extensive damage out there. still investigators have been combing over the scene. one of the things they found, fredricka, is a piece of the tail. investigators have been zeroing in to see whether or not what is called the elevator lift tab did, in fact, become dislodged from the airplane, perhaps causing the plane to go down, something that investigators addressed during th

dan simon is live at the scene in reno. the ntsb held a news conference. we saw it here with fredricka. they talked about the photos. what did investigators say about them? >> first of all, don, the big headline this hour is that nine people have now been confirmed dead. they said three people died as a result of the crash. now the toll has risen to nine people. investigators seem to be zeroing in on the tail of the plane. the photos and videos seem to suggest that a part of the tail actually dislodged mid flight. it's called the elevator tab lift. that stabilizes the plane. ntsb crews in the area found what could be a component from the plane. it suggests that, in fact, it is the elevator tablet but they are not saying it yet. i want you to listen to the ntsb investigator who addressed it a few minutes ago. we are aware of that. in fact, a component has been recovered in the area where that was observed. but i think it is critical at this point to know that we have not identified the component. it will be examined. so we don't really know what the compone

dan simon, cnn, reno, nevada. >> all right, dan. i asked aviation analyst jim tillman about the photos taken just before the crash and if a damaged elevator trim tab on that p-51 mustang could have caused this crash. >> it could have been. you know, that little tab looks innocent by its size and the size of the airplane. but you have to realize what it does is it takes care of the air load on the pilot as he's trying to maintain a certain configuration. it also dampens or eliminates flutter, which is a very dangerous condition have when you're flying at those speeds particularly close to the ground. >> it has been a tragic weekend for air shows. there was a crash today at the thunder over the ridge show in martinsburg, west virginia. the pilot was killed. but no one on the ground was hurt. the crash reportedly involved a t-28 trainer aircraft. i-reporter jennifer clark took these pictures and called the crash "very scarey." friends and family of two americans imprisoned in iran are anxiously waiting their release. an attorney for sh

let's bring in dan simon live from reno. dan, what is the latest here on this investigation? >> reporter: well, we know that attention still remains on the tail of that aircraft, the p-51. crews when they canvassed the wreckage scene, they found a piece of the tail, you can see some of the pictures or videos of the plane in flight, you could see a piece break away. there's concern that may have caused the plane to go down. specifically, this is called elevator lift tab. that piece will be sent to the washington, d.c., ntsb lab for analysis. brooke, as you also mentioned, turns out that that plane also had a camera on board facing outward and authorities or investigators found memory cards at the scene. they're not sure if they actually go with the camera, but nonetheless those cards will be analyzed for further analysis when they're sent to the lab in d.c. as well. the plane also hi guess you coud describe it as a crude form of black box. it took things like oil pressure and rpms and speed. that information was wirelessly transmitted to the flight crew when the plane was p up

dan simon is in reno. what more have you learned? >> reporter: well, there's some growing speculation that an important part of the airplane known as the elevator trim tab became dislodged and came off the airplane. there's at least one to on the internet right now purporting to show that. i can tell you that i've seen more, i've seen actual evidence of that. i saw some tos taken by this gentleman who is a professional photographer from west virginia. mark, i saw your photos, but you don't want to release them at large just yet. >> i furnished them to the ntsb and the reno air racing association. when they decide to release them they will be released. >> reporter: you're also a pilot. in your photo i can see that tab coming off the plane. in your mind what does that mean? >> the trim tab helps you keep the airplane under control. it's part of the horizontal. when you lose that you lose a portion of the control surface. >> i want to ask you what went through your mind when you saw that plane hurl to the ground. you were about 150 yard

our dan simon is following this story. dan, what's been the reaction on campus? >> reporter: well, it's been a fairly peaceful thus far. we've seen a lot of protests on uc berkeley campus over the years. this is one of the more unusual protests we've seen. usually the protests involve some of the liberal organizers. in this case, you're talking about berkeley college republicans who are trying to make a bold statement here about how universities across california should accept students. obviously there was a bill passed by senate democrats. we're waiting to see what governor jerry brown is going to do, it would roll back some of the affirmative action things. it would allow universities to accept students based on gender, race, and ethnicity. berkeley college republicans upset about that, and staged this protest with the cupcakes and prices, drew. >> so why is the school, the chancellor, coming out against what is essentially a bake sale to make a political point? >> reporter: because, you know, it's politically incorrect what these republicans are doing, and the

dan simon is standing by in reno. what are investigators saying about this. >> reporter: the ntsb just held what they said would be the last press conference related to this crash and released what could be a treasure trove worth of information. what we found out is that number one, the plane, the p-150 mustang was equipped with a video camera. it faced outside, and they also recovered at the crash scene some memory cards that could be associated with that camera. they are not sure yet. they need the send them to the lab in washington, d.c. for analysis, but that could be an important factor in determining what happened. second, the plane was equipped with what could be described as sort of a crude black box. it recorded information such as oil pressure, rp ms, speed, things of that nature. that information was also wrote on a memory card, but i the data was also transmitted wirelessly to the flight crew on the ground. either way, it looks like they have that information. let's listen to what the ntsb had to say. >> w

cnn's dan simon is in reno. tell us what investigators have found so far and how those items could be important to this investigation? >> fred, first of all, we got a look at what that crash scene looks like today. you can see that the devastation is just tremendous. the plane left a three-foot deep crater there on the tarmac. it is eight feet wide and the debris field is spread out over an acre. in terms of what may have caused that plane to go down, obviously the focus is on the tail of that aircraft, almost immediately after the crash, photographic evidence emerged that a piece of that tail came off during mid-flight and that's something that ntsb confirmed during their news conferences and when crews went to take a look at the debris field, they actually found a chunk of the airplane and ntsb officials talked about that yesterday. take a look. >> it just happened so fast, a split-second event. you think, is this it? am i going to die? >> reporter: obviously, that was not the right sound but we want to talk t

dan simon is joining us live from reno. th person now has been confirmed dead in this crash. there are dozens of people who were injured here. do we have any idea on their conditions? >> reporter: well, suzanne, we know about 70 people were taken to local hospitals. of those 70, a few dozen still remain and we know that some of these injuries are quite horrific. we actually spoke to a nurse who was among the first to arrive here at the scene. she told us that about a dozen or so people actually had some limbs amputated. they would have been in the first or second row of where the plane came down and they would have been hit by flying shrapnel. these injuries are truly horrific. we know that several people are still in critical condition. >> that's awful. that's just unbelievable when you see what actually occurred. we are hearing that they're getting at least some information about part of the plane's tail that was found. what do we know from that? >> reporter: well, there's a lot of attention being placed on the plane's tai
