dan simon is there where barry bonds now learning his punishment, came down that sentence not too long ago for misleading a grand jury that was looking into steroid use among professional athletes. dan, tell us what he got. >> well, no prison time, brooke, that's the important thing. he could have gotten anywhere from 15 to 21 months. insecond the judge sentenced him to 30 days home detention, he has to wear an ankle bracelet, not too bad for barry bond, he lives in a ten-bedroom mansion in beverly hills and then after that, he has got two years probation and he also has to pay a $4,000 fine. but here's the thing, barry bonds is appealing his sentence, appealing his conviction, so the sentence is stayed. so, this could drag on for a couple more years but if you're barry bonds, it's a pretty good day. of course this case has been dragging on for many years and of course, his reputation has been sullied because of these steroid allegations. and his legacy will be debated for many, many years but for barry bonds, he has got to be pretty glad he is avoiding any sort of jail time. brooke? >

dan simon is in san francisco.ount i hear, that's not going to happen. >> most legal experts think he'll get home confinement which for barry bonds isn't so bad. he lives in a 10 bedroom mansion in beverly hills. that beats the alternative to federal prison. this is a case that goes back all the way to 2003. it's been lingering on for so many years. his legacy in baseball will be debated for many years to come in the wake of the steroid era in major league baseball. that's an entirely different question with what the judge is faced with today. she has to decide whether or not to send him to prison. home confinement or maybe probation. this case started eight years ago. this was a major steroid scandal that originated here in the san francisco bay area. barry bonds was called to testify in front of a grand jury about that case and in that testimony he said he had never used steroids and so prosecutors charged him with perjury as well as obstruction of justice. there was only one charge that stuck. it was that obstru

dan simons is live in san francisco where the sentencing begins shortly. e believe will happen this afternoon? >> reporter: well, we do not believe barry bonds will actually get jail time. mostly all of us think he'll probably get home detention based upon how some of these other defendants were sentenced by this federal judge. suzanne, barry bonds' baseball legacy will be debated for many, many years. of course how he goes down in history is a far different question than what the judge has to decide today. this is a case that goes back to 2003 when this federal steroid probe began and barry bonds was eventually hauled in to court where he testified in front of a grand jury and he said he never knowingly used steroids. prosecutors determined that to be perjury so he was charged with several counts and also an obstruction of justice count. but only one charge stuck and that was obstruction of justice. here we are today. all of these years later and barry bonds will learn his fate in a couple of hours. >> dan, why did this take so long to get to this point of
