of course, our dan simon is there at the event. so, dan, tell us what the hype is all about.ittle at this point. >> well, they're very secretive, just like apple is. and you know the titanic battle in technology used to be between microsoft and apple. well, now you it's between google and apple. iphone versus android. and this is the google i.o. conference. what does i.o. stand for? it stands for "input/output." thousands of developers from all over the world expected to attend the event that's going to be lasting until wednesday. people filing into the building behind me. we're in downtown san francisco. and this is really google's opportunity to unveil its newest gadgetry, and as well as showcase some of the new features that we're expecting to see in the upcoming android phones, kyra. >> so any scoop at all about the look, the size, the cost, any kind of insight? because, of course, you know, there's a lot of people that want to know, hey, is this going to be smaller, bigger, better, cheaper? >> you know, this is going to be smaller than the ipad. this is a tablet that we

our own dan simon is there. what are we expecting theday, dan?la, and things are kicking off in about an hour, and it is intense here in downtown san francisco. 5,000 developers from all over the world here for this conference. these are the people who make their living off of producing all of these cool apps that we see on the iphone, and now in terms of what we are expecting today, apple is known for the intense secrecy, but we believe that they are going to do a couple of things. one, show off the operating system or the preview the new operating system that powers the iphone and the ipad and we are expected to see features like broad facebook integration which we don't v and new maps and interesting technology with maps. and also some new features with siri, the voice-enabled personal assistant on the iphone. we are expected to see a whole bunch of new mac computers and an entirely new slate of mcintosh computers, and of course, everyone is watching and everybody in the technology world interested in apple is going to be following this event

up next, dan simon in san francisco for us. what's the big news?e keynote address just ended a few weeks ago. the computer company releasing a new machine for high-end users. this is a new mac book. it's 15 inches. it's like that thin mac book on steroids. it's got a high resolution, retina display. here is the thing. it's going to cost you the entry level unit, $2199 if you trick it out and get the extra bells and whistles, you're looking at almost $4,000 for this machine. let's talk about software. apple previewing the new operating systems for its technology including the iphone and the ipad. some of the features that we saw include broad facebook integration, something we've never seen before and enhanced siri features. also a whole new mapping kpooer experience, including turn by turns if you have stand alone gps unit. i think you can pretty much give it away, put it in the dumpster. the phone will do everything for you. >> i'm just learning to use my ipad. thank you very much. >>> up next, gustavo valdes. that's up from 50 just in 2006. why t

we go to dan simon on the opposite side of the country. talking about this google tablet unveiled. it's the nexus 7. how does it stack up to the ipad on kindle fire? >> reporter: it's smaller than the ipad. it's a lot cheaper. $199. it looks to be like a good machine. the problem is if you're somebody who is heavily invested into the apple infrastructure, say you've downloaded a lot of music or apps, it might be a bit of a hard sell to switch over to the google system where you might have to buy that stuff all over again. we'll see how it does. it's a very competitive landscape. this is going to go on sale in mid-july. >> that's the nexus 7. then you have this thing called the nexus q. it looks like a little black orb. what is this? >> reporter: it's like the apple tv product. that set top box. it allows you to stream music and tv shows directly to your computer. you can control it with your phone or your tablet. same problem here if you're somebody who has bought a lot of c content using apple, it may be a tough sell. it looks to be a nic

dan simon is with us. >> reporter: we remember when the battle it was between google -- i'm sorry, its battle is between google and apple. iphone versus android. now we're looking at google's i.o. conference, i.o. stands for input and output. you've got thousands of developers coming to downtown san francisco to see the latest android products. at this point, carol, you really have to say it's advantage google, right now, when it comes to smartphone market share, google now has about 62% of the global market share. so we'll see what google has up its sleeve in about two hours from now. carol. >> what about that tablet? >> well, it's interesting, you know, most of the tablets that have been released have been flops with the exception of apple's ipad. so google expected to introduce its own tablet today. we believe it's going to be about seven inches, smaller than the ipad. retailing for about $200. and this is really sort of to block what microsoft came out with last week and amazon's kindle fire. we'll see how the tablet does. it should enter the market pretty soon. of course, anytime

dan simon, how is it looking so far?reporter: well, the lines are pretty intense, kind of looks like a scene outside of an apple store for an iphone sold. this is the annual worldwide developers conference and brings in 5,000 people from all over the world. people who design apps for both the mac and for iphones and ipads. let me tell you a little bit about what we're expecting today. we're expecting that apple will preview the newest operating system that powers the iphone and ipad and release a bunch of new products, mainly new computers and whole new slate of mcintosh computers. the question is could there be something else? there's been a lot of buzz about that. we're not expecting to see it but this is a economy that is of course very secretive, you never know. there will be a lot of eyeballs on tim cook, the first time he delivers the key note address at the worldwide developer conference and this was the last time we saw steve jobs in public at this time last year. of course, a lot of attention on tim cook today.

simon & schuster? >> guest: that's what's so funny because i really want it to be a place where editors like morgan can do whatever they want, and i find that story remarkable. >> guest: well, danick, to their credit, you know, they said, look, this is why we have you here. you're 27 years old. i bought the book for, i think, $5,000 for world rights. and why not allow a young editor to take a chance now and again? that's why -- >> guest: exactly. that's really, the exciting thing is to let editors discover writers, and that's the best -- that's the reason we're here. >> host: so, jonathan karp, besides the e-book world that we're living in today, what other changes should we be looking out for in the next couple years in publishing? >> guest: well, you know, i'm interested in whether the attention span is getting shorter. and, i mean, if you were to look at writings from the previous century, it is longer. the books are longer, the sentences are longer. and so i wonder whether digital will result in some books being shorter and perhaps in longer form journalism having more of a place in the culture than it does right now. i think magazines have cut back on their longer stories.
