dan simon is live from suburban portland this morning. u finding out about jacob roberts? >> reporter: hi, john. we've been looking into his background and looking into basically every aspect of his life. look at his family, his relationships, his work. really at this point nothing adds up. authorities say they looked into his criminal background and found nothing, no violent past, so at this point it's a real mystery. now, you talked about facebook. we've got some new pictures of him on facebook. perhaps there's some clues about sport of his psychological well-being if you look at his facebook page. you'll see a notation, the slogan that says follow your dreams and then over it, it says cancelled. so what do we make of it? at this point not a whole lot to go on. there were reports that he was planning to move to hawaii. he was telling friends that he inherited a bunch of money. of course that's not true. everyone seems so genuinely shocked that this happened. they called him a happy-go-lucky kid, somebody who was popular in high school. h

dan simon is live at the scene this morning. dan, what's the latest?n imagine the challenge for law enforcement who came to this mall, it's 1.4 million square feet and they found the shooter, but for a while, they didn't know if there were multiple shooters. at this point, police in their own words have said they have tentatively identified the shooter, but they're not telling us who he is until they're 100% sure. he's reportedly in his early 20s. what we do know at this point is the shots rang out about 3:30 in the afternoon. he was carrying some kind of rifle. he was wearing dark clothing. some kind of mask. maybe a hockey mask. according to witnesses, as you said, it was pandemonium inside the mall. people ducking for cover, people ducking under clothes racks, that kind of thing. even the mall santa got down on the ground. here is how one worker inside the mall described the scene. >> i work at a kiosk right below the food court. we heard about six shots at first and people scattered like crazy and everyone left. we waited around for a second and pe

dan simon, what more do you know?ng to shorts, stole the gun that was used during the attack. he took it from a friend just yesterday. the gun is described as an ar-15 semiautomatic rifle, at one point it actually jammed and they believe that's why more people weren't killed during the attack. we can tell you that the shooter, jacob tyler roberts, age 22, had no significant criminal history. authorities are still trying to figure out what may have set him off. here is some of what the sheriff had to say. >> the suspect pulled his vehicle in front of macy's, parked his car, exited, and moved in a rapid manner toward the food court. a lot of folks reported he was running, moving quickly, left his car, opened fire in this general area. he ended up striking two victims at that both died of their injuries. there were some medical staff and other people that rendered aid. following this, the individual fled down this -- along this corridor, out down the back hallway down to some stairs, which is -- this is actually on the u

dan simon is live in portland. what is the latest? hooter, dan. >> we can tell you that the sheriff craig roberts is saying he believes that the victims were shot at random, this was not a targeted attack. he's also saying it appears at one point his rifle actually jammed which explains why more victims weren't shot. happened at 3:30, 10,000 people in the mall, the shooter goes through macy's on the second level, headed towards the food court where the shots rang out, pandemonium inside the mall, people ducking for cover at one point. the santa in the mall taking pictures with children, he ducks for cover, so it was quite a scene, when it was all over as you said, three people were shot, two people dead, two adults killed, one male and one female. the mall is 1.4 million square feet, so big when authorities came they didn't know what to do. this area is so big that they had to canvas basically the entire mall, that took many, many hours, they weren't quite sure what they were dealing with but in the end we're talking about a single gun

cnn's dan simon is standing in front of a huge one in lafayette, california. wolf said. can that rain-soaked area handle anymore rain? >> reporter: well, it's just a mess, kate, and the forecast is bad news for these rain-soaked communities. let me explain where i am. i'm in lafayette, california, standing inside a sinkhole. this is pretty dramatic. it's 80 feet long, 40 feet wide, 15 deep. let me explain how this happened. the water was gushing beneath the road here. there's a creek. and basically, the soil just ripped away and it caused the street to cave in. crews have been working all day, trying to clear out these large chunks of concrete. they also had to create these alternative lines, these temporary lines for water and sewage to service this neighborhood, so they didn't, you know, go without basic services. the weather has been terrible here in the bay area for the last week. we had three major storms. we're expecting a fourth storm tonight. so some more rain is really the last thing this community needs. there have been all kinds of problems, besides

dan simon is in lafayette, california. f oakland, where there is this huge, huge sinkhole. i'm guessing you're standing somewhere near it, dan. show me what it is and how they're going to fix it. >> reporter: yeah, hey, brook, we're standing in the middle of this enormous sinkhole in lafayette, california, about 20 miles east of san francisco. you can see some of the crews here clearing away the debris. let me explain to you how this happened. there is actually a creek that runs underneath this, or it did. and it basically got clogged and it tore away all the dirt, all the mud, and with it brought down the street. you can see the entire street basically caved in, no traffic going on either side. this is a major inconvenience for the people who live in this neighborhood. you can see one of the things that crews had to do is they had to set up a temporary sewer line. also a temporary water line. this is one of the lines here, they went to extraordinary lengths to make sure that the people in this neighborhood aren't affected
