. >> joining me right now, dan simon who is live in colorado springs. so, dan, how did the clinic's patients and staffers stay safe during this terrifying ordeal? >> well, hi, fredericka, we're hearing some of the disturbing firsthand accounts of people who were actually inside the planned parenthood when this all unfolded. people who actually heard the gun shots, saw the gunman and ultimately hid in some of the officers and medical facilities inside the building. but before ultimately being rescued by s.w.a.t. team officers. one search person is 22-year-old latonya, there with her boyfriend. she was getting an ultrasound. she had the procedure done, everything was fine, she was getting ready to leave and then she heard the gun shots. she saw what was going on in the parking lot. she saw the gunman who was holding that assault-style weapon. and then, she darted back inside and she hid for several hours before being rescued by those police officers. this is how she described the situation. take a look. >> did you immediately recognize those as gun shots?

i want to bring in dan simon from colorado springs. dan, you spoke to this brave young women. i want to play you some of this interview. she described the last moment before she saw her boyfriend before gunfire erupted. >> reporter: when you saw the gunman outside, what did he look like? >> like this was just a game to him. >> reporter: did you immediately recognize those as gunshots? >> no, i didn't. it took someone to tell me to get down, that there's a gunshot. even then i didn't register because it felt so surreal. at that point when i had heard the gunshots, i was able to make out a picture of what was going on, because i saw the gunman, i saw him shooting. and once i realized that this is really happening, is when i flee the scene and went in the back room. i ran down the hall, tried to open one door. it was locked. i opened another door. and there was two people there. one was a nurse and one was an actual patient. when i heard the second gunshots, you could clearly tell it was in the building, it was near, it was close. one of the ladies beside me started screaming. i

what an interview, dan simon, in colorado springs for us. dan, first off, are authorities helping this woman track down her boyfriend? what do we know about that? >> reporter: well, she called police and they couldn't really help her. they told her to call the hospital and ask perhaps he might be one of the victims. and so she did that, and she found out that he's not in the hospital. as the time goes on, the worse it looks. hopefully some kind of explanation behind all of this. but very trying time for her and her family. she just wants to know what happened here. we know that authorities have released the name of the police officer who died, but they have not released the names of those two civilians and we're told that's not going to take place until monday. >> wow. that must be agonizing for this woman to deal with that on top of the trauma of going through this active shooter situation. what stood out to you about her? >> well, obviously, it would be anxious for anybody, you know, going in to have an ultrasound. she just found out she w

let's get to dan simon with more. >> reporter: the 57-year-old robert dear made a reference to quote baby parts. that is the view of the attacks. at this point, authorities say it is too early to reach a conclusion. as for the suspect's background, the portrait is emerging he was a loner. he lived in isolation in colorado and then before that in a cabin in north carolina. in the background, we know he had brushes with law enforcement, but never convicted. in 1997, his wife at the time accused him of domestic assault. because there is no violent criminal past, the mayor says it is hard for law enforcement to keep tabs on him. >> we had examples of this in the past. this guy is kind of shaping up to be like a ted kaczynski type character. perhaps not quite the loner, but it is very difficult for law enforcement to deal with individuals like this who don't commit serious crimes and get themselves on the radar that way. unless a threat is posed beforehand and you can respond to. >> reporter: authorities work to come up with a firm motive. we know the suspect gave up inside the planned pa

dan simon is in colorado springs for us. the investigation, dan, what are you learning? >> reporter: hi, wolf. this was a relatively routine court appearance except for the fact you have a high-profile e suspect. he was appointed a public defender, robert dear 57 years old. he looked like he was struggling to stay awake in the courtroom, almost sedated and also wearing a bulletproof vest, but this was a video feed. show was here at the detention center so it's not entirely clear why he was wearing that bulletproof vest. dear is accused of killing three people and wounding nine others. >> do you have any questions about any of these rights, sir? >> no questions. >> reporter: suspected gunman, 57-year-old robert lewis dear will remain in jail after an attack at a planned parenthood clinic that left three dead and nine wounded while a motive is unclear, a law enforcement official told cnn after surrendering to police, dear made remarks about quote baby parts and spoke of his anti abortion and anti-government views with investiga

dan simon is live in colorado springs so, dan, what are local officials telling you about the investigation? >> well, hi, fredricka. the portrait that has emerged of the suspect, 57-year-old robert dear, is that this guy was a complete loner. he lived in a trailer in central colorado. before that he lived in a similar setup in north carolina far away from civilization. in terms of his criminal record, he didn't have any. he didn't have any convictions. over the years he had encountered with law enforcement but none of the charges stuck. in 1997 his wife at the time accused him of domestic assault but no charges were brought forward. a few years later he was charged with being a peeping tom but, again, no charges came as a result of that. and just a short time ago i had a chance to talk with the mayor and he said because there seemed to be no violent episodes associated with this suspect, it's very hard for law enforcement to keep tabs on someone like robert dear. take a look. >> we've had examples of this in the past. this guy is kind of shaping up to be like a ted kaczynski type of charact

cnn's dan simon has more. >> tom and his family have been in the restaurant business for more than 80>> have fresh crabs for you. >> fresh crab, the sibt item in the city's famed fisherman's wharf, but this year is different. >> can you recall a situation where you have not been able to get california crab? >> not for this reason. there's been strikes and bad weather and problems with fishermen. never because of an algae. this is something new to us. >> algae has forced wildlife officials to suspend the start of crab season. algae gets caught in the food web, eventually making its way to the crabs. if the infected crabs are eaten by humans, they could pose serious health problems. damoic acid can be fatal. >> and it targets a specific part of the brain that can cause brain damage, seizures, coma, in marine mammals, but also in humans. >> it's all part of an algae bloom caused by el nino. this is the largest and most persistent one they' seen in 15 years. it's already had a huge impact on sea lions. 200 mall malls treated outside of the city. 80% of them have died. >> we're seeing a nu

cnn's dan simon is live for us now in colorado springs. what more are you learning about the suspect's personal history? >> reporter: well, hi, frederick ka. the picture that's emerging is this is somebody who is a complete loner and basically lived in complete isolation. that's why some, including the mayor, have compared him to the unabomber ted kaczynski. he lived in the middle of central colorado, basically in a trailer, before that he lived in a rural cabin in north carolina. not much in the way of criminal history with this suspect. in fact, no criminal history. there were some charges brought against him but nothing ever really stuck. for example, 1997 he was basically accused of domestic assault on a former wife, but those charges were dismissed. there was a complaint of him being a peeping tom. those charges were also dismissed. so things of that nature, had no violent criminal history to speak of. that's why authorities say keeping track of him is something that would have been difficult to do. as for his situation in central col

dan simon. so to talk more about this with cnn law enforcement analyst, jonathan gilliam and art ratteric. you've actually done some security assessments at the past at other planned parenthood locations after they received threats. so do you think the staff is, in general, somewhat trained for these kind of scenarios? is there, you know, some -- there are drills that they go through to know what to do, how to help save lives. >> i mean, the mere fact that they had a safe room at that facility just goes to show you that they did have some pre-planning involved. since 1994, when president clinton signed the face act, kiss freedom of access to clinic entrances act, there have been several assessments done at all these planned parenthood facilities around the country and usually the u.s. marshals would go out and handle these assessments and make recommendations to the clinics and if anything did happen at these particular clinics. and it goes towards arson bombings and threats towards these threat

cnn's dan simon joining me live from colorado springs. n, what happened today when the suspect appeared in court? >> well hey, jake. this was a relatively short court appearance, routine as these things go. routine except for the suspect and of course the heinous crime. the suspect 57-year-old robert dear was charged with first-degree murder. he was appointed a public defender. he was advised of his rights in the process going forward. he looked to be perfectly honest hi looked to be somewhat out of it. he was slowly blinking his eyes almost sedated in a way. he was also wearing a protective vest. but keep in mind this was a video feed, so he's here at the detention center. so he wouldn't have access -- or the public wouldn't have any access to him. dear of course is accused of killing three people and wounding nine others. >> there are three people hiding in the bathroom at planned parenthood where they think they hear a suspect. they say somebody's knocking. >> reporter: dramatic audio captured over police scanners during a six-hour stan

dan the simon is in san francisco and watching what is going on for us. n, what are you hearing about what happened at this university of california campus? >> hi, wolf. we don't have a ton of information yet, but what we do know is that it occurred sometime before 8:00 a.m. this morning and apparently as the classes were getting under way. you had a deranged individual who went on what you could describe as a stabbing spree, and stabbing five people originally that the university said that all of the people were students, and they sent out a correction that apparently some of them were not students. we know that the police arrived a short time later and confront ed the suspect where he was shot and killed on campus. good news, all of the victims were conscious. two of them were airlifted to a hospital, and the other three were treated on campus. that is what we know at this point, wolf. >> do we know anything about the individual who went ahead and stabbed these five students? any motivation, any political motivation or anything along those lines? >> of c
