dan simon is in napa, california. >> reporter: these fires continue to rage out of control with tensed to flee their homes. it is not clear when a lot of the folks will be allowed to return to homes or even if they'll have a home to return to. let me explain where i am. we're in the town of healdsburg. this is wine country. it is harvest season right now and the smoke and the flames will have damaged some of the crops. it is not clear how much. but obviously wine country is going to be impacted in some fashion. over here you could see the fire trucks, firefighters basically waiting for the next assignment. they're weary and they've been working overtime and the state is trying to get more crews in from other parts of the country. in the meantime, some of the numbers, anderson, have been mind-boggling. some 12,000 lightning strikes over the past several days resulting in hundreds of wildfires. two dozen of them considered major. those fires have been broken into various complexes. there are three of them. and two of the three are considered two of the largest wildfires in california h

cnn correspondent dan simon is in northern california.o how much of these fires are contained right now? yesterday you said they got a little bit of help from the weather. what does it look like today? >> reporter: hey, jim, there's still a ways to go, but thanks again to favorable weather conditions. they are making some good progress. the big fire here in wine country now hovering right around 30%. the other major complexes 20% contained and here we are at the calistoga county fairgrounds and you can see all these fire trucks behind me and this saturday operation center and you can imagine the infrastructure involved with managing these fires. the fire crews parked their trucks and hopefully get some rest and get their meals and do some laundry. i saw a trailer full of washing machines and it is an amazing thing to see how they put all of this together. you have 15,000 firefighters in california trying to get these blazes under control. jim, also keep in mind you have tens of thousands of people who are still evacuated and they still do

. >> let's go to cnn's dan simon who is reporting from napa valley. >> reporter: we are in a neighborhood near the town of napa which has been ravaged by these wildfires. you can see here several homes have been destroyed and the risk to the region is far from over. it's going to be a very busy weekend for firefighters and temperatures remain. quite hot. authorities have said california has really been one siege with lightning strikes. 12,000 lightning strikes and that's resulted literally in hundreds of wildfires. about two dozen of them considered to be nature. we're not just talking about the fire but there's also the smoke, the quality of the air in the bay area is considered to be the very worst in the world and of course all of this is happening during the middle of a pandemic. tens of touchdowns of people who have evacuated and make a decision whether or not they want to sleep in a shelter. we found some folks who were too scared to go sleep in a shelter because they were worried about getting the virus. they were sleeping in their cars. that said the red cross is trying to mitigat

in one of two dozen fires that are burning across the state and cnn's dan simon is live in vacaville with the live, breaking details. what's the situation? >> well, hi, alisyn. this is an extremely dangerous situation for the city of vacaville. you can see the authorities have issued an evacuation order for residents of this community. we know it has a town -- it's a town of about 100,000 people. this is part of the series of fires impacting the north bay, north of san francisco. and all induced by lightning and the fires have spread. you're dealing with challenging conditions throughout the state of california. with the heat and because there are so many fires burning, resources are stretched thin. we know that governor newsom has issued an emergency declaration to try to free up some resources to get more firefighters in here to battle this situation. right now though, the destruction appears to be fairly limited but we'll get a better sense of things once we get daylight. in vacaville, the fire jumped a major roadway overnight and is now threatening that community. again, you can
