snow, will it help long term? earlier today i spoke to an expert, dr. dan mcevoy in reno.t everybody's hopes up, this doesn't mean we're out of the drought, we're just beginning the season for measuring snowpack. >> that's right. it took about two years to dig ourselves into this hole, so we had two dry years in a row. and we're really not going to get out of it just by a couple storms. we're early in the winter. we have our core rainy and cold and snowy months ahead of us. january, february and march. and so we really need the storms to continue. so the sierra is, for, currently about 150, 200% of average for the date, but only about 50 to 60% of the peak snowpack that occurs later in march or april, so until we get to that, those peak values, we need to keep the storms coming. so we can keep building that snowpack and have enough runoff once we get into the spring and summer. >> so how many more big storms do we need to get out of the drought? or get out of drought status? >> well, it's hard to say a number of storms, but ideally, we would like to see a continuation of a

snow here locally. i'll be back with those details coming right up dan ama. okay, sandia. thank you. now on the peninsula two people are dead after driving into flood water early this morning in a third person had to be rescued abc 7 news reporter ryan curry talked with a neighbor in that area and he joins us live ryan. yeah, i could even danould evenn this is the scene where that flooding happened earlier today. the water level has subsided and the cars have been cleared, but i want to give you a look at this tunnel and this underpass right here. this is what happened earlier today above. that is where caltrain tracks are and you can see how deep it is between where the road is and where it meets the tracks and those lights over there. that is how high the water got this morning that led to two people dying. underneath this over hidden by water are two cars. this morning's rain caused water to fill up this entire area from the street all the way to the bottom of the train tracks the san mateo county sheriff's office. emergency crews were able to save one person, but they couldn't re

that's right, kristen and dan we've got some drenching rain and strong gusty wind on our way. maybe even some snow here in the bay area. here's the timeline on australian 11 o'clock tomorrow night at which we'll see the first wave of rain beginning to push into the north bay and between 11 o'clock tomorrow night and early saturday sunday morning. we're going to see heavy rain reaching all parts of the bay area along with wind gusts up to 35-45 miles per hour at times then later in the day on sunday going into monday. we'll see the focus the rain first mainly on the south bay and the central bay then it'll spread to all parts of the bay area again on monday and from monday into tuesday. we'll have some cold air coming in that may produce some snow in our higher elevations mixing in with the rainfall speaking of rain. for potential for the three-day period sunday through tuesday will range from about two and a half to five inches means. well winter weather storm watch i should say a winter storm watches in effect for the sierra from 10 pm tomorrow to 10 pm tuesday. we expect two to five feet of snow

dan: thousands of people in south lake tahoe area are without power. several feet of snow fell in the sierra and another storm is on the way. the weather service says if you have to travel to the mountains, do it now. don't wait. they are discouraging travel tomorrow into thursday. be prepared for chain controls and delays. check out these snow-covered trees in soda springs west of truckee. researchers shared this video this morning. they measured five feet of snow from the storm. kristen: closer to home, snow on bay area peaks including mount diablo. you can see this dusting. it melted fast but some people headed up there to play in the snow while it lasted. take a look at this video from mount hamilton in santa clara county. you can see what appears to be actually a few inches on the ground. dan: that is fantastic. dry outside right now, you can see live doppler 7 is clear at the moment but moreno will soon be on the way. kristen: but how soon? spencer is here with the forecast. spencer: mainly dry right now, spotty showers, you don't see anything happening but you see a
