senator dan sullivan from the great state of alaska, for a discussion on how to address the challenges posed by china. senator sullivan, thank you so ] evening. the senator sits on the arms services committee and prior to being elected to the senate, he served as alaska's attorney general and commissioner of the alaska department of natural resources. but let me share some insights about his background that's so relevant to today's discussion. he has worked for almost a quarter of a century on u.s./china relations in a variety of roles. let me share a few. as a marine, he was deployed part of the -- marine expedition nar unit and as part of a task force to the taiwan straits. this was part of the response to chinese provocations on the 'of the presidential elections in taiwan. and also as a commissioner of natural resources and energy he travelled twice to china with the goal of seeking to cultivate the energy in china's resources. it didn't end there. he worked at the white house, at the national security council during the george w. bush administration and i had the privilege of work

let me give you a comment rather than a question, senator sullivan. dear dan, as former executive director of the iea, i could not agree more with the importance of natural gas in alaska. japan started importing lng 50 years ago. now, we have to consider importing hydrogen rather than liquefying it. that is an interesting comment. sen. sullivan: i was going to say, he is a great friend of mine. he did a great job as the chairman of the international energy agency. i was the u.s. board member at the time. we were friends and saw eye to eye on a lot of issues. i am glad he is watching. >> this is a wonderful community. i do want to share with you a couple of questions that are skeptical. senior advisor to the atlantic council believes we tend to over exaggerate threats. he is questioning what is the real threat to the u.s. from china at the moment? another saying -- you're talking about a new cold war. he says this comes from an american unilateralist outlook. we violated international rules ourselves. he talks about iraq. what gives us the right that china must

appreciate it. >>> so let's take some of those questions right now to republican senator from alaska dan sullivan. senator sullivan, thank you very much for joining us. i know you just got back from the border. i want to ask you about, that but first let's pick it up with this question of voting rights. this new law in georgia, and i know you're not from georgia, but this is the -- this is a republican law, you know, boosted only by republicans. it actually makes it a crime to give people food and water while they are waiting in line to vote. how -- how is something like that justifiable or do you have problems with that? >> well, look, jon. good morning first and good to be on the show, and, you know, i don't know the details of the law in georgia. there's been different interpretations by different groups. you know, i do know the details of the laws in alaska, and when i was attorney general, i fought for expansive voting opportunities and rights particularly for indigenous alaskans, which is a huge minority group in my state, but i will tell you this. i think it's really important to have this

but the vice president got off a little bit easy today because with alaska senator dan sullivan, a republicanote wasn't needed to break any of the ties here on any of the amendment votes. we didn't end up having the tie situations. so the vice president kind of remains the secret weapon in a budget reconciliation world we're going to be living in for a while here and has not had to be deployed. i think where we will see harris become more of a player as the biden agenda progresses is on when it's progressives who are the ones who are unhappy with the way a bill might be coming together. the reality for everything that the biden administration is going to do for the next two years at least is any one of 50 senators can hold up a bill. so last night it was john manchin, who wanted to pull it more to the right, but don't be surprised if as we get further along on some of the administration's priority lists it's progressive senators who want to pull the bill further to the left. then it may be harris who has the progressive credentials biden perhaps lacks who has to step in and say, look, we need
