dana, i understand you have some breaking developments. and, again, we're talking about a possible compromise on health care reform. >> that's right. this is good news for the president, as he speaks about health care reform. we've been talking about the feuding democrats in the house, and that feud has delayed the president's top priority. well, we understand that there is now a deal between some of the key blue dog conservative democrats and house leaders. there is a deal that -- here's what we know. we know a few details. we're going to get more, but here's the headline. the headline is that they're going to put some kind of bill into committee. that vote is going to happen by week's end. however, as part of the deal, the full house is not going to bring up health care reform until the fall. we understand just a little bit of detail, that they have -- that those conservative blue dog democrats have been successful in bringing down the costs of this health care bill by about $100 billion, but that's all we know so far. the key is they're

that's why you saw dana bash there asking questions of senator durbin. he is the number two democrat in the senate and he hinted yesterday for the first time that this may not go through the may not be a vote before the recess. what you have in all those reporters, i tell you, they're outside a room where some democrats are briefing other democrats. what is this about? you know, tony, we're keeping an eye on this group of six democrats and republicans on the senate finance committee where we think maybe the best chance for a bipartisan compromise on health care reform and keeping an eye on their talks, they have been having these almost every day and in that room that dana was standing outside of, democrats in that smaller group of six were briefing other democrats on the committee to say where negotiations are going and we have heard from the chief of that committee, max baucus. he's told president obama that they're making progress on their proposal, tony, but at the same time it is slow going and they have missed self-imposed deadlines by weeks here.

dana bash joins us on the phone. what do you have? >> hi there, kyra, i came from a press conference from the majority leader, the democratic leader in the senate, who made abundantly clear, said point-blank for the first time that the full senate will not vote on the president's top priority, health care reform, until it comes back from the august recess. he said that he believes it's better to have a product and one that is based on quality and thoughtfulness rather than trying to, quote, jam something through. so, you know, we have been reporting all day, and frankly for the past couple of days, that this is where it was heading. that the senate would probably leave and come back and have a full vote then, but this is the first definitive word from the guy in charge, the senate majority leader, harry read. what he did say, he hopes in the key committee, the senate finance committee, that we've been standing outside of their offices for days, he hopes that the they can come up with a deal and, in fact, they can pass something in the

let's go straight to our senior congressional correspondent, dana bash.ind closed doors right now and lots at stake. >> reporter: a lot at stake. i don't think it's an overstatement to say that what's going on behind these doors actually, the fate of the president's health care bill lies in the hands of the senators meeting behind these doors and the challenge that they're dealing with mostly right now is how you pay for it. let me just put up on the wall the price tag to give viewers a sense of how tough this task is. $1 trillion. that's roughly how much they think this is going to cost. to pay for it, they have got to find some combination of raising taxes, or cutting spending. and getting that right combination, that is what the senators meeting behind me, this bipartisan group of senators, that's one of the main things they have be grappling it and grapple with as we speak. there are so many policy differences and challenges as well. everything from the role of government with regard to this reform and how many people are going to be covered in this h

dana, i understand there's been a big development. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right, kyra. we have been standing in front of this room here, this is the office of senator max baucus, because that's where a group of bipartisan negotiators who hold the president's fate in their hand, they have been talking. the development is that one of three republicans in that room has pulled out of the talks. that republican is orrin hatch of utah. he told our congressional producer, ted barrett, that he actually informed the chairman, max baucus, just within the last hour that he has decided that philosophically he just doesn't agree with the way things are heading behind those closed doors. specifics, he said he doesn't really agree with the idea of having an employer mandate -- effectively mandating employers have coverage for their employees or an individual mandate, making it clear to every american you must have coverage or else or we're going to penalize you. he also doesn't like the idea of expanding the medicaid program which is something they've
