joining us now from the ucla campus is nbc news correspondent dana griffin. so dana, what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: yeah, so katy, behind me, this is the effort to clean up this area outside of royce hall where students, faculty and outsiders created an encampment. front loaders are rolling up gear, dumping them in large bins that you see behind me. you can see several crews tossing items in. they have been breaking down the tents that were posted here. and they made some headway here. this was full of items, and it's mostly clear now. we know that law enforcement says about 209 people have been arrested so far. they are going to be charged with misdemeanors, and then released. the state of what they plan to do here on campus after being released is unknown. we know that classes have been moved online today and tomorrow. because of the disruption that all of this caused. and there's still graffiti outside of this building. so what they're going to do to try to clean this up, it's going to take more effort over the next several days. we heard from

dana griffin, nbc news. at 11 general hospital actor johnny wactor was killed while trying to stop a catalytic converter theft. this happened in downtown la 3:00 yesterday morning. police say a worker found three men trying to steal his car's catalytic converter, so he tried to stop them. and that's when one of the men shot him. the group fled the scene. paramedics rushed, whacked her to the hospital where he died. police are still looking for the three suspects. well, this week, the man who attacked nancy pelosi's husband in a home invasion has two separate court appearances. david depape was sentenced by a federal judge to 30 years in prison for attacking paul pelosi in 2022. however, a new sentencing hearing is set for tuesday because he was never given a chance to speak in court during his previous sentencing and the law requires a defendant be given that chance. so to perhaps going to get that opportunity at a new sentencing hearing on tuesday, then wednesday, opening statements are set to begin in depa

let's bring back nbc's dana griffin by phone. this is not going quickly.ink we expected it to. lots of speeches and interruptions. tell us what's going on. >> this is the thing that democrats were concerned about. they knew they had the votes. they have done the first three readings, and they have 16 yays, 14 noes in this particular vote. the thing we're seeing now, several senators are stalling, one in particular, senator shawna ballic talked for 20 minutes reading a story about one woman's pregnancy. it was kind of cringy. you had several people in the gallery turning their backs, several people shouts out to just vote. they have since been removed from the gallery. what we saw was the makings of what looked like a filibuster has ended. another senator is on the floor explaining his vote. this could be a long, drawn out process. they have the votes but senators right now are taking their time to explain their votes. there are several that did not vote during this third reading so we could be here for several hours. trying to figure out if this officially

nbc's dana griffin is on the ground at ucla. what are you seeing right now on campus?r they were allowing crews to go inside. but they have now put up additional barriers, and this is what is unfolding at this moment. we are seeing crews using these front loaders, dumping several bags of garbage and tents inside these huge garbage bins. we're going to keep walking down, to show you a little bit on campus. we're going to see there are several crews in light blue shirts. they are dismantling tents at this moment. they are putting them in large piles so that those heavy equipment machines can come and collect them and then dump them. this has been going on for the last hour or so and it's been a very very quick process as everything is getting cleaned up. we know that classes today have been moved online. we're not seeing many people on campus besides media, law enforcement and the crews behind us cleaning up this encampment after the highway patrol came in, dismantled what had been an encampment that's been here for at least a week. you can see some additional items here

nbc news correspondent dana griffin, who's in phoenix, arizona, for us, along with nbc news washington correspondent yamiche alcindor, who's in charlottesville, virginia. dana, the vote in arizona is about to happen. the speech is being given on the floor. a moment ago, i described what the civil war era ban, went it went into effect. the idea that sometimes parents killed their kids when they were punishing them, and that was sometimes exempted. the age of sexual consent was 10 years old for a girl. and that sometimes people cut out other people's tongues, this is what was happening when that law was officially put into place in 1864. this is what is also embedded in that code. is that partially why we're now seeing at least a couple more republicans potentially vote alongside the democrats to repeal this law. >> reporter: i think a lot of it has to do with what is happening in november. a lot of the republicans that are siding with democrats are in swing districts, and that's part of the politics here. i will say we were just inside in the senate chambers. it is standing room only, y
