we'll begin with dana griffin who has the latest on the fire burning in california. >> reporter: progress over the weekend, firefighters containing this fire to 36%, but the number of destroyed homes, has gone up to 174 destroyed homes, dozens more have been damaged. . he fire is considered a dirty burn, you got embers that fly for miles and that's why in neighborhoods like this, the neighbors homes still standing but several behind me have burned to the ground. embers carried for at least 2.5 miles, another potential santaan wind event expected wednesday. those big raging active flames are no longer present but that doesn't mean that we're out of the woods yet, so officials are reminding people now's the time to gather those important documents, medications and have your go bag ready if they have to issue more evacuation orders they want to make sure people can evacuate immediately. several people have returned home, many trying to sift through the rubble to try and find family haireirlooms. 30,000 people live in this burn zone, zero fatalitfatalities. >> dana griffin, thank you. >>> bil

al's got the latest on the fire conditions, but first, let's get to nbc's dana griffin in southern californiames are not racing towards neighborhoods, firefighters we saw on friday using air drops to try to stamp out some of these flare-ups that popped up. we met residents last night that were returning home, many having firefighters help them sift through the rubble to try to find family heirlooms. there were emotional support animals there to greet them. i spoke with one firefighter who described this as trying to put out a blow torch with a squirt gun, describing also the embers that flew through the air some miles away. that's why they consider this a dirty burn, because in neighborhoods, half the homes are standing. the other half are not. the cause of the mountain fire is still being investigated, but fire officials say there is still a lot of dry brush on the ground, so they are warning people ahead of the next santa ana wind event to prepare now. grab your important documents and medication, and be ready to evacuate immediately if fire officials give the go-ahead. back to you. >> tens

nbc's dana griffin is in camarillo, california, and nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with me ino. george, i understand there was some rain in that area last night. did it help at all with these fires? >> reporter: to answer that question, take a listen to the leaves here. they are still bone dry out here. so while that rain did help give firefighters a little bit of a reprieve, not nearly enough to make an impact with the fire as we know mentioned, 2,500 acres on the new york side, 25 acres on the new jersey side. it's 20% contained. they are looking forward to shifting winds to help them with the fire fright. as you look around here, it's a mountainous terrain. it is rocky. it's difficult for the machinery to get in there and build the containment lines. officials confident that they were able to save about 170 structures on the new york side. given that they were able to get some of those people to evacuate momentarily. nothing mandatory, and right now, the outlook is very good. a little early this afternoon, fire officials on the new york side held a briefing to give everyone
