joining me is michigan attorney general dana nessel.go, i should note, she was in the headlines because she charged 16 fake electors who signed serts falsely claiming trump won michigan in the 2020 election. thank you very much for joining me. you read through this. your state is all over this thing, 39 times. what is the significance of michigan, do you believe, and what state officials there told trump, now a defendant, about what actually happened in your state in the 2020 election? >> well, you know, 2020 was, obviously, such a challenging year for us here in michigan in regard to the election. i mean, these false claims of voter fraud, voter irregularity were coming at us fast and furiously, lawsuit after lawsuit after lawsuit. as we know, none you have those lawsuits were successful, not a single claim made by any of the trump attorneys, you know, was given any credence at all in any court. but nonetheless, you know, it was utilized as a mechanism to dispute the election, and it has had long-lasting implications. but what my real

i'm joined now by michigan attorney general dana nessel.general nessel, so first of all, we should note that because one of the three individuals charged with trying to seize and access voting machines was your opponent for attorney general in 2022, you have recused yourself from that investigation. and i just want the note that for our viewers. but i do want to ask you just about the contours of that investigation since the special prosecutor dj hilson has been out there talking about this case. can you give us any idea, even though again i know you have recused yourself. but just as the michigander i have on the show this evening, what are they charged -- why were they trying to access voting machines? >> well, first of all, let me say that there are a lot of parallels that i see between donald trump and his activities and the things that we've seen in regard to this recent indictment against him, and then what his soldiers were doing on the ground in the seven targeted states, including, of course, michigan. now the allegations involving

some even claimed that the attorney general, dana nessel, who is a democrat, is wrongly targeting politicales last month. it was though after investigation into this fake electors plot the 16 trump allies showed up at the michigan state capital in december 2020, tried to storm in with fake certificates that falsely declared trump as winner of the state's electoral votes when joe biden had won the state by more than 100,000 votes. all 16 being charged with forgery, publishing a counterfeit record. notably, these are the first state charges stemming from this fake elector plot. we saw this plot unfold in seven states. of course, this is the same plot at the center of the indictment that was handed up against the former president last week, victor. so it's going to be interesting seeing this case unfold on the state level with these charges like forgery and fraud, and then seeing how it interacts potentially with what we are seeing from the special counsel. but these 16 republicans, they are vowing to fight these charges. they are first of their kind charges for what was an unprecedented plot

allegedly happened in a number of states, and i actually spoke to the michigan attorney general, dana nesselweek about how maybe she sees these charges laying the ground work for potential cases elsewhere, and here's what she told me. >> the law varies greatly from state to state in terms of what kinds of charges would be applicable. these are not really uniform across the states, and each state ag is going to have to make that decision for themselves as to whether or not they have the facts and the evidence that comport with the law in their particular case. >> she also told me, catherine, she has been having conversations with other state ags which is no surprise. despite the differences in laws, do you think other ags will be watching this case, see how it shakes out, and it might inform what they decide, whether to follow suit? >> exactly, and other d.a.s. i know we're waiting for fulton county d.a., and she gave immunity to a number of people who were allegedly false electors. so, yes, you look to see what other people are doing, and look to see their mistakes and look to see, you know,

get in on july 18th, with the false electors lawsuit, a lawsuit against them, and we talked to dana nessel there, their attorney general, is michigan, and here with us is former michigan republican congressman fred upton, one of the few republicans in the house to vote to impeach donald trump for his actions on that horrific day in u.s. history. the second impeachment. congressman, 939 days since the attack on the capitol now. the former president is facing charges for his attempts to cling on to power, not to incite the riot that day, but to actually use violence in a number of instances, not just on january 6th, along with his coconspirators to try to advance his scheme or conspiracy, the alleged conspiracies in seven states and other places to try to hold on to power even though they say he knew that he had lost the election. what are your reflections on this moment? >> well, you know, of course, i was there on january 6th. and you'll remember that the president, president trump, shortly after january 6th, said publicly that he had done everything in his words totally appropriate. that

michigan attorney general dana nessel announing the charges last month alleging the defendant signederwork falsely claiming donald trump had won the 2020 election and that they would cast the state's official electoral votes for him. and of course that would be when the electoral college certified the results. some of this evidence that was uncovered here you may recall came out during the house january 6th committee's work. so far the seven people who have already entered their pleas all have pleaded not guilty so far. joining us now from outside that courthouse in lansing is nbc news correspondent shaq brewster. shaq, seems like a lot of activity, these back-to-back arraignments. how's the court navigating this? >> reporter: they're relatively quick proceedings that we've been witnessing and they've been mostly happening via zoom, the judge there in person but the defendants appearing via zoom. we saw the judge read through the counts, eight felony counts that all of them are facing. we heard the judge read through their rights. at this hour all 16 defendants have pleaded not guilt
