alexis glick of the fox business network, former white house press secretary and fox news analyst dana perino. good to see you. here we see the political reports. he's starting to sweat for the first time in his presidency. how much trouble is he in politically? >> well, the stakes are very high, he's raised the bar. he's not even supported by his own party, and the congressional budget office numbers that came out over the past three weeks are really hard to overcome, and i think the best think could could do is hit pause and try again in september. sean: i think that would be the prudent, reasonable thing to do, but i don't think he has the inclination to do it. the biggest headline this week that nobody talked about is that the white house is purposely trying to hide the real economic numbers, meaning their forecasts have been so wrong, they don't want to admit to it the american people. >> well, christina romer has said they're going to come out with their new projections in large part because the work she did along with jared bernstein obviously had the wrong projections when it took a l

former white house press secretary dana perino joins us live from d.c. this morning. ning to you, dana. >> good morning. gretchen: let me start with the offer now to try and asswage all of the heat that has gone on the last few days. a couple of beers. is that going to work and would have you recommend that to your president? >> i think -- barack obama is a good convener. i'm trying to imagine president bush doing that. sometimes presidents can be very good conveners and you can start a conversation bring people together. you can do that on the foreign policy stage. bringing like karzai and musharraf together in our administration or do it on domestic issue. it would be interesting if they thought it would be a gooded to bring republicans and democrats together to try to solve some of the problems we have. they haven't really wanted to do that. i think the other thing that will happen is whereas last week they could have made the phone call. they could have said they were apologizing or quasiapologizing and left it at that what they're ensuring now is that this issue i

let's ask our fox news contributor, a former white house press secretary, dana perino. did it ever occur to you when president bush was in office? >> i think it is highly unusual. i think it is likely inappropriate. i do not think anybody gets invited to come to the white house will ever turn it down, but i think it will possibly compromise the cbo director's independence. that is a problem, and then he goes back to his office to write a blog in which she says how exciting it was to repeat -- need to be president, and i think that is not good. neil: doesn't put him in a position that whatever follow-up numbers -- does it put him in a position that whatever problem numbers he comes out with will have to be looked at with a grain of salt? >> those numbers are going to move very much, and it would be surprised if they do not move anything, and all of a sudden, the cbo says, "the costs are going to come down." it does not seem possible. if history is to repeat itself, in the past, it was the cdo that helped bring down the clinton push for health-care reform -- it was the cb

joining me to look at the price tag of this looming reform are alexis glick and dana perino. first, it's the democrats, their own ranks fighting among themselves, which is a good thing. >> they control every bit of washington and have no one to blame but themselves. sean: why am i convinced that pelosi, reid, and the president have not given up -- >> no, they haven't given up -- sean: and they're basically going to compromise and trying to rewrite the bill. the idea of a co-op, not a government option. >> no matter what i don't think they're going to get a bill done by friday. i don't say they're not going to try. so we have to be careful they're wily. but they have not convinced the american people what is going to be in this plan and how they're going to pay for it and they're not buying it. i really think they have to go back to the drawing board. sean: what bothers me, alexis, is they're going to come up with different wording, use incrementalism, not going to give up their goal which is ultimately government-run health care, no? >> the co-op kfings has been going on now

work, and joining me now to discuss this and more alexis glick from the fox business network and dana perino. i don't want to say i told you so, but i told you so, alexis. >> we're starting already. sean: obama says unemployment -- they promised us it wouldn't go above 8%. now he says oh, it's working as expected. summer said it would be almost immediately. same with christina romer. reality check? >> they botched it. sean: hannity right. >> they botched it, and one of the most important things you can do to improve confidence is you have to set expectations, and part of setting expectations is lowering the bar, not raising the bar, and the expectations going into this were far too high. even if the predictions were that the jobs were going to come in 2010 or 2011, it was the wrong type of stimulus package. sean: i hate to say alexis was right, but you underpromise, you overdeliver. they way overpromise. when joe biden has to admit we misread the economy, we guessed wrong, unemployment they're saying is much higher than what they promised it would be if they passed the stimulus. >> not only

former white house press secretary dana perino said, it is fine to come down and say what you want tohat is just keeping the spotlight on him. many feel like that did not bode well for the president. >> the president is free to say what he wants. it is a teachable moment, however. i think, in aç way, everyone wants to move on to more important issues, but it is interesting what has happened. there seems to be a reaction to president obama. i hope professor gates and reflects on how he behaves that night as well, and citizens around the country can really think about where race relations really are. megyn: even when the president tried to dial things back, he çstill accused the police officers of overreacting. that is something they have denied. again, the president says he does not know all the facts, but he believed they overreacted. is there a bias on behalf of the president? some have said that this is a classic example of race relations. >> i think what president obama said reflects a kind of limitation in his understanding of the country. also what he said about doctors is pret

dana perino could have got that, but she didn't have the financial aid to get her there. did you go to harvard? >> no, i'm one of the nonivy leaguers in washington, d.c. brian: how does that happen? i didn't know it was possible. what did you think of the speech last night? i know you watched, dana. did he do what he was supposed to do and that is sell america on his program that he didn't write? >> as before he comes across very appealing, he knows his material very well, but i don't think it answered the mail for what they were trying to do. you wake up and the headlines say he knows his material, and he wasn't persuasive, and i think they probably put him in a bad position last night of having a press conference, especially because they announced it on a saturday, and then all those things that happened between saturday and wednesday, they came to the white house last night for a press conference, and there was no drama, he lit no fires, he didn't answer a lot of the questions that people have, and so i think they didn't do what they wanted to do. alisyn: if he knows h
