i recently spoke with dana thomas, author of"no fashlis: the price of fast fashion and the future ofs trendy clothes made at fast-- in vast at rock bottom prices ined, sold thousands of stores worldwide. they knock off the fashion-- the you cheap versions.rs, and give but they specialize in volume. their business model is abt economies of scale. and because of it, we are awash with clothes. >> sreenivasan: and what, what kind of stores are we talking about? >> like zara, h&m and top shop and mango, and forever 21, which is teetering on bankruptcy. so it's kind of proving that this model may not be the best business model. >> sreenivasan: and how quickly are they cycling through an inventory, or a fashion? how quickly does it go from theh that's making it to the store shelf? >> within weeks, a couple of weeks. twthink zara has it down t weeks now, which brings and more often.the store more at one point, zara-- >> sreenivasan: and they spend more. >> and they spend mo. you know, the average store maybe you gets in there four or five times a year, and zara will get you in there two doze

a it'pic which dana thomas tackles in her new book fashionopolis. e ago.e to her a short t thank yowhfor joining me. y is fast fashion such a big problem? what impact is it having? >> it has reset the rhythm for t all fashion industry. now all companies are doing drops all the time. big luxury fashion brands used to do two or four seasons a year.w now othing drops all the time. people are making close faster, is clothing ftefa consuming it er, getting rid of it faster. we are awash in clothing and we have too much of it filling our landfills. mewe put out 100 billion gs a year. we buy 80 billion, which means we have 20 bilon leftover, and 99% are not recycled. on 1% is recycled. st gto landfills, and our landfills are heaving. jane: how do you change that culture? i am one of those people who would struggle to spend $200 on a pair of jeans if i can buy f them for $80. >> that's why i wrotthis book. i wanted to take us back to the oa when you did spend mon clothing, kept it, and wore it until it fell weart. rememberought jeans stiff and broke them in

. >> dana: what you think about that, juan, because you know justice thomas. >> juan: yeah. this, so it's hard for me to talk without, but i just think that there was a sense right at the time that the black community was initially supportive of justice thomas, and it was once you had a lot of people who were concerned about the abortion issue pressure fellow liberal or left wing, however you want to college among the black leadership backing away. the first thing to say is that, obviously, and i've said this in the first segment, people in 25 plus people try to reach out saying, yeah, they never get back to me. it's not a matter of phone calls. it's like, hey, if you are going to investigate, don't say don't go beyond this period. let them investigate. >> emily: they did. >> juan: they didn't. it is so rich to me to hear someone challenge donald trump saying that someone distorted the story. i mean, "the new york times" took responsibility. we should have put this information in the story. they demoted editors. they have fired editors for erroneous stories. >> greg: they've
