dani: thank you. facebook suffering a devastating outage that shut out many of its 2.7 billion global users. instagram and whatsapp also affected. we are joined by our editor from our asia tech team. what has facebook said in regards to what caused the outage? peter: facebook put up a post a couple of hours ago explaining what happened. what they are saying is there was a network configuration error. behind this, there are some human errors where the network configurations that told of the data where to go in their data centers were messed up. they had kind of broad problems with this that affected facebook, instagram, whatsapp, also affecting internal communications. they were not able to communicate internally the way they typically would. somebody had to physically go out and reset some machines to get things back on track. after quite a few hours, they were able to get the traffic act and mostly operating. but it was a very broad outage. they have 2.7 billion users across the globe on different pl

dani? >> thank you.et's stick with that story as well with tesla now worth more than $1 trillion in market value. that means that elon musk's personal fortune jumped by $36 billion as well. it is the biggest one-day gain in the history of bloomberg's billionaire index. walk us through how this came to be, the $1 trillion market cap. >> the numbers are mind-boggling. it started with hertz putting in that 100,000 vehicle order. that is worth $1.4 billion for tesla. there is no discount on those cars, even though there are so many. that propelledded tesla's market above $1 trillion. up there with the like of apple, amazon, microsoft and alphabet. it is the second fastest company to get to $1 trillion, behind facebook. it sounds crazy in a way. it is trading at 178 times estimated 2021 earnings. it means that musk himself is worth almost $288 billion. that is about $100 billion more than jeff bezos on the bloomberg rich list. musk could become the world's first tril nair. -- trillion nair. the way it is goin

dani: a great point. interesting to see how chinese markets open up when they do, given the volatility. juliette saly, thank you. over to russia, which is offering relief to europe's gas crisis with strings attached. after a chaotic day that's how the benchmark prices rise 40%, vladimir putin said russia could stabilize the problem by exporting record volumes of fuel to europe. while not explicitly mentioning the nord stream 2 project, vladimir putin mentioned gas routes through ukraine are more expensive. joining us now is andrew james, are energy and commodity editor. what does it all mean for europe's ongoing crisis in the energy sector? >> as you said, putin did not link it to nord stream 2, but it was obvious what he was talking about. a good way for russia to export more. the pipeline that runs from russia to germany runs under the baltic sea. it is now in a fairly controversial and lengthy permitting process that needs to satisfy european union standards to separate transport gas from production of

dani: so true.e also had the aramco ceo saying that we still have the strong demand and really tight supply, so all of that lending itself to these issues of higher energy, though margins pretty much maintained for a lot of the earnings we are seeing. alix: and we are still right near record highs for european equities. dani: we are so close to record highs. we definitely aren't there yet. we saw them in the u.s. i want to get a quick check on the markets. just about 30 minutes away from the european close, and the stock 600 is on track for its third day of gains at a rise of 0.7%. that is trading at its highest since august. so again, not at record highs, but we certainly are trying to make our way there, being led by a lot of retail companies with strong earnings. i also wanted to show us the euro pound cross. we talk a lot about cable and how weak the u.s. dollar-pound cross is. however, the year -- the euro is at its weakest since february 2020. agricole saying that clients don't want to take po

dani: thank you so much. let's move to china which is returning to the market after a weeklong holiday. a lot has happened. joining us is juliette saly in singapore. we have not had to worry about the chinese stock market in the past few weeks, but we have had to worry about the china story. what is the reaction in markets finally open again? juliette: as mliv put it, china markets have returned with a carefree spirit. so much volatility. we have seen the cfi rise by 1.5%. the pboc draining liquidity, the most in a year, suggesting authorities are trying to bring normalization to the market. government bonds declined. when it comes to the hong kong market. , you have that back to where it was. it is a technical catch-up for the china market. the hang seng fairly flat. evergrande concerns of contagion still remain. it is not showing up too much, showing little stress when you look at china's funding market. these concerns have not gone away. how long this rally last is anybody's guess. dani: thank you so much,

dani: fair enough.e also yesterday announced a share buyback program of about 2 billion euros and a second want to come as well. how do you reese -- see returning cash to shareholders at a time when central bank regulators are allowing this but many are voicing caution saying, the worst of the pandemic is not over. frank: yeah. we are strongly capitalized. we are having a very large buffer to our requirement. this month, we have paid the remaining 2019 and 20 dividends of 2.9 billion euro. and then tomorrow, we will kick off our buyback program. after this has happened, we still have quite a big buffer towards our requirements and we are very well-capitalized. in a very strong position. we generate capital. i backs is expected to be a continued tool for us to distribute capital, excess capital to our shareholders. dani: does that mean that the second program that you plan early next year could be assess -- of a similar size or perhaps even larger? frank: i don't have any comments as to the size of the p

dani: they did.ower bond yields helping those long-duration assets intact. 3/10 of 1%, tenure selling as well. i wanted to point out zinc at a three year high in london because of the energy crisis. zinc factories putting their capacity at 50% of what it usually is. that's a skyrocket higher there. brent crude above $83 a barrel. manus: let's take the inflation discussion further to china. inflation the highest since 1995. juliette saly is losing control. shocking headlines. is it really important? ? juliette: it is when you start to think about these differences passing on higher costs to consumer. let's have a look at the chart of cpi. this big diversion's that you are seeing between china's factory gain inflation which was 10.7%. we are looking at u.s. inflation now and cpi. this is really adding to this chorus. you will see a 50 basis point cut to the rrr. bloomberg economics saying that the pboc has room to maneuver. let's look at how it has flowed through. there's a beautiful chart on the gtv.

dani: good morning. it is drama in the belly here, and i'm not talking about the overindulgent lunch. it might be a risk of a handbrake turn, but what is it mean for risk? the concern we discussed this morning is a possible bar shock. manus: exactly. as you get repricing from the kiwi bond, the aussie bond. i go back to steven major and it sits in my hand. when they move, it sets the tonality for the rest of the global markets. just had a conversation and they made it clear equities could levitate for a while but there is a risk that if central banks raise rates and you have gas prices rising, tax rising, rates rising, it is a potential car crash where you go through the windscreen. that is the central bank conundrum. kiwi paper on a five-year yield, over 2% bit this is the risk. -- over 2%. this is the risk. dani: the risk is what bank of america has been talking about as well. 2020, the stock markets went through was gross, 2021 is inflation, and 2022 could be a rate shock. what does that mean for risk
