dani: the u.k. does have this unique situation where a lot of debt and mortgages are tied to this rate market. the market pricing some 150 basis points of hikes and you say they can't do that given what it would do to the mortgage market. how hamstrung is the boe at this point to help fight inflation? mark: i think some of the measures that have been announced are helping mitigate inflation in the short term. measures to cap energy prices led us to revise our projections on inflation from a peak about 18% back down to 12%. although we have done some steps , that is more of a medium-term effect. ultimately, if you are going to have a nasty recession with higher rates and a collapsing housing market, or you will have to choose which is the lesser of different people's here -- evils here. ultimately the bank of england may need to tolerate a weaker pound and longer inflation that otherwise would have been the case but there isn't an easy way out. dani: what are you doing in this gilt market? remarkable
