dani: u.s.er kevin mccarthy says the house will pass his 1.5 trillion dollar debt ceiling plan this week, putting off the chance of a default until next year. sources tell us mccarthy has not yet lined up enough votes. bill, this is what everyone is looking at. how much time do they have? is mccarthy's confidence misplaced that he can win support for this proposal? bill: he said the vote will happen this week so he is heading -- betting he will have the votes lined up in time. the consequences would be a humiliating defeat for him just four months after it took more than a dozen rounds of votes for him to become speaker. i think he's aching that the moderates and -- banking that the moderates and conservatives are going to line up behind him just to prevent that kind of defeat. dani: what are the challenges? how can mccarthy bring -- his margin is so thin as you mentioned -- what are some of the levers he can pulled a make sure he has backing? roy: his proposal -- bill: his proposal is to carry

dani: sam, thank you so much.charter has just reported adjusted pretext profit ahead of estimates in the first quarter. saying its business has been boosted by rising interest rates. joining me is the standard charter cfo. thanks for coming over. i know you have been all over london this morning so i appreciate you hustling over. i want to start net interest income. for some of your u.s. rivals, this was an area of disappointment. can that interest income continue to shine? >> overall, topline growth has been really strong for us. we are up 13% on topline growth. we were up double digits last year. the overall performance has been fantastic and profitability is now up to levels we last saw back in 2015. interest rates going up has clearly been a help in that but also we have seen a lot of client demand as particularly the asian markets pulled through the covid period and start to look forward. dani: does that mean interest income martens will have peaked? >> last year interest morgan was about 1.4%. we've said thi

dani: last hike?lan: i have rate cuts on the brain because we are looking for cuts prayed last hike this may. should be the last hike. normally markets do well after that. mike will say, it is all about earnings, and they will suffer in q3 and q4. maybe they will but fair enough. certain companies like nestle, procter & gamble, can absorb these inflationary pressures. dani: to that point about seeing cuts, this is something the market is pricing at the moment. we have a chart of 150 basis points through june of next year. there has been plenty of commentary from the fed too but the market is wrong, why is the market right, alan? alan: you asked to do i have a contrarian view? the contrarian view is to agree with the market. no one believes it. dani: it is a strange time when that is the view. alan: people like jamie dimon, amazing people say this is rubbish. but why? two things. when rates are cut, they are cut a lot, so you have to price that in. secondly, the fed could change quickly. they didn't ra

dani: thank you very much.s just coming through from the gas company, their operating profit for the full year, they had downgraded their outlook, it is quite a big mess when it comes to the forecast, 12 billion euros is what they see. the estimate was 14.6 billion euros. they previously saw 13 billion. not only is this a miss from what was estimated, but it is also a downgrade for the gas company from what they saw before. perhaps that just signifies some of the lower gas prices we have seen. the less success of trading this market. the same time i teased about 10 minutes ago that we might get some at regional cpi data, we did. ever so slightly weaker than what we had thought. this is for the northwest ryland. that comes in at 0.5% cpi growth. the estimate had been for 0.6. ever so slightly less topped than what we have been expecting. other cpi data will be out throughout the next few hours. earnings season is in full swing. we will take a look at how companies are faring so far. this is bloomberg. ♪ dani: ha

dani: exactly.tephen: when the dust settles, we will get to a point where we realize probably the fed is not 100% right and neither is the market 100% right. you are talking about one of the most interesting, biggest gaps right now between what the fed is telegraphing and what the rates market is pricing in. when all is said and done, we will end up somewhere in the middle. in other words, probably one more hike from the fed, or maybe a pause in may. a summer pause, then as we get into the autumn, maybe more of a support of language from the fed on policy when it starts to realize it does not have to think about inflation control as a number one priority, and can start looking at supporting growth. the short answer to the question is, i do not think either will be 100% right unless we have a deep recession in the united states, then the market will be 100% right. i would lean in the direction that over the course of the second half of the year, the fed will have to turn more supportive. maybe not wi

dani: really in general. it comes for management, that sort of thing for investment management, how much have the u.s. banks cannibalized what is happening in europe? guest: the recent issues at credit suisse in the fourth quarter, they already led to outflows and as i said, weakening of the investment banking franchise. surely, other banks will have gained from that. i think it really depends on which business we are talking about and where the main beneficiaries are. these can be very different from business-to-business. even ubs would have been partially getting some of the flows. after the announcement of the takeover in march, that might have changed a bit because either counterparty working with both or clients having assets booked with both. they prefer partially to diversify their exposures and that is why also ubs might have been to some extent impacted. we will see that on tuesday. alix: what will be the stand up to the upside? guest: i cover the swiss banks only. i would mainly focus on commenting

dani: it is monday, april 17. the countdown to the close starts right now. >> the countdown is on in europe. this is bloomberg markets: european close, with guy johnson and alix steel. alix: welcome to bloomberg markets. i am dani burger in for guy johnson. i say these markets feel like summer markets because that is how we are trading. volume is light on european equities. it is so light it looks like the type of volumes we see in the summer holidays, new year's, those sorts of thing. we are unchanged on the europe stoxx 600 but we are coming off the back of four consecutive weeks of gains. the big movers are in the fx space and it is a stronger dollar. the hedge funds on cftc data have turned. they are net short. every major pair of fx currency versus the dollar. you are seeing a weaker euro. the swissie which was a haven in the times of the banking turmoil when you do not want to be long the dollar, things like the yen and the swiss franc did well. that is unwinding. the dollar versus the swiss franc is higher

dani: great to speak with you.oke with a banking analyst earlier this week who said they like goldman and morgan stanley's, the banks that are well positioned to capture the flow coming out of credit suisse. why is that not on your mind? cole: there will be market share taken up from that and as you -- and you guys have commented on that. the european banks, they were the redheaded stepchild or the banking world -- for the banking world and now they have high capital ratios. that u.s. banks are watching market caps go down quicker so i think banking as at a different position from a competitive perspective. they won't be as easy for american banks to pick up to share because financial institutions are in better footing. that doesn't mean in smaller regional banks, they won't make profit. let's talk about commercial real estate in 2026. this is kind of the delayed effect we had out of the s&l dimarco -- debacle. it took years to sort out the mess of the banking institutions. i am a saying we won't have hundreds of t

dani: fair enough.ter comes from the consumer business and from vaccines. both of those are fading from view with the trends of the world and divesting the consumer business. what takes their place as a growth driver for j&j? joe: the vaccine revenue is in the rearview mirror. that is not part of the billion dollar raise in sales guidance. we provide guidance excluding vaccine sales so that should not be a consideration. with respect of what is going to replace the consumer when we separate that business throughout this year, we have continued strength in our pharmaceutical pipeline. not only do we have results across the portfolio but really love the date of the scientists are generating around lung cancer, sprovado and we see uptick throughout the globe. in med tech we are integrating another. we concluded and closed at the end of last year, the smallest heart pump, had tremendous growth. 22 present versus the standalone quarter last year. we are pleased with that. orthopedics had a strong quarter as

dani: what does rrenault?ine: great story, talking about how a different car executive is losing sleep at night because of elon musk. before it was mercedes that had to pull back their price points in china because of what elon musk did. his real focus is on scale. it's on the cheaper price point and the renault. they are worried and have to see that they will ramp up their own profitability. even with elon musk cutting prices, their operating margin is better than ford and gm. alix: that should scare them more. are we going to look at tesla as a traditional car company with low end models? they can get the cash cow from the expensive models and then produce low end vehicles? caroline: i wonder how they keep that allure. how can you ensure you still got that high end luxury without cannibalizing that you've got a cheaper product. how can you make sure they are more desirable? alix: that's a fair point. dani: we've seen that with designers when they have lower price points. can we talk about the blue checks? ca

dani: check that out.t bank, who reported results and they surpassed analyst estimates. earnings are strong, are we past the banking stress peak. joining us is frank. he has an overweight rating and a price target of 155 dollars on a mentee bank. inc. you for joining us. are we past the peak of inking stress? frank: i think we are. if you look at the names these guys are trading a lot of money after trading 6, 7 times. historically, the banks are trading 12-13 times that number. i think most of this, not all of it is baked in at this point. i would say that assumes we are going into a mild recession. if credit losses end up looking like they did during the great recession, then yes, there could be another 10-20% down. i don't think we get there. the caveat is it is hard to convince investors of that, before you start to see credit deteriorate. hard to get them interested in the space ahead of that. alix: -- frank: i thought it was a good result. we saw positive outflows of just over 2.5% late quarter. i th

dani: dani here in london. great to talk with you today. big macro element is the geopolitics of it. china and u.s. relations, trying to bring more of the renewable industry back to the u.s. -- considering that u.s. solar energy depends on asian manufacturers, about 80% of annual panel supply, can any place replace china? john: absolutely. the united states of america can replace china, and we are doing it. there are a lot of capacity additions for wafer sales, modules. batteries is a big part of this as well. those announcements have already been made. all the companies that we buy panels from, at least the vast majority, either already have capacity here in the states and are expanding it rapidly, or have announced capacity additions in the united states, or are about to. we think that when you go and look at the inflation reduction act, it does not matter what you think of it, but it is having a material impact, and it should, bringing the solar and battery industries, which have become national security important to the united states, s
