bob dole basically did not have use of his right arm, daniel inouye had his arm shot off. he want todd be a doctor and realized the dreams were dashed. dole said you ought to think about getting into politics, the type of thing i want to do when i get back to the states and get my health back. even though they served across the aisle, they worked together on many, many things and this is what happened in december of 2012 when inouye late in state in capitol. he came from the senate side of the capitol, i was staning a couple feet away from this. the casket is laying and he's in a wheelchair with elizabeth dole, the senator from north carolina, his wife. dole got up from the wheelchair and with assistance walked very gingerly, hard to get around here, over to the casket. there's was a tear in his eye. he touched the casket of daniel inouye and said i didn't want my friend dan to see me like this and i've never quite seen a scene that emotional at the u.s. capitol. eric: i'm going to see if we can get that footage. it was so touching. it was so moving and it speaks volumes a

daniel inouye was a democrat, and he urged him to run, as we have learned. do you think that could be a lasting legacy of mr. dole's, to reach beyond the aisle to cement the friendships between politicians of opposite parties the way he did and was beloved and liked by so many? >> look, i think it's very important to remember that at its best politics is a very human business. and i want to go back to be russell, kansas. people who grow up in small towns learn, i think -- and my wife calista grew up in an even smaller town than russell. they learn that you have to be nice to everybody because they're still there. [laughter] so dole came out of a natural small town background, and his instinct, i can't overemphasize this. not only was he smart, hard working, courageous, he had a natural -- he liked people. and he brought to politics the best of those kind of attitudes. he was a patriot, but he was also a people person. and if you could find a few more folks like that, you could unlock a lot of the current problems. eric: that is for sure. former house speaker

officer, colonel philip hart, who later became senator phil hart, and long time friend of bob dole, daniel inouye, who represented hawaii in the united states senate. many doctors, like a doctor in chicago, medical professionals, thought senator dole wouldn't survive his injuries, and he did. they thought he would never walk again, but he proved them wrong. the hospital was turned into a federal building and renamed the hart-dole-inouye federal center in 2003. senator dole spent the rest of his life fighting for veterans and those who served our nation and was instrumental in making the world war ii memorial in washington, d.c., a reality. after being awarded two purple hearts and a bronze star for his selfless service in world war ii, senator dole served in the kansas state house and as county attorney before being elected to the house of representatives where he served for eight years. he then moved across the capitol to represent all kansans in the united states senate for almost three decades, serving as republican majority leader twice and becoming the republican nominee for president in 199
