i've been talking to daniel webster for about two and a half years on this. i would not be surprised to see his name emerge, even tonight to be a candidate also for speaker if that's the case. i think we pick up a number of other votes and perhaps get to that 29. >> 60% of the american people the voter republican want a new speaker. i think that speaks volumes here. it's going to be very interesting. this is not happened -- we haven't had a second round of votes since, what, 1923? >> i don't know if that's the case, but i know 1923 was quite a dramatic night with nine different surrounds of votes before they finally settled on a speaker back then, sean. i don't relish the idea of going into that much drama this time. it would be nice to get it in one vote. unlikely for that to happen. i'm in this position when i take an oath to uphold the constitution, to protect and defend the constitution of the united states and that is what our oath is. it's not just defend the united states, it's the constitution. and when you watch it under assault and you're being bloc

texas louie gomert and ted wr oho and daniel webster. chief congressional correspondent mike emmanuel on capitol hill. big day now for speaker boehner. i guess he can breathe a sigh of relief, right? >> well, gretchen, there's no question about that. most house republicans believe that john boehner has the votes to be re-elected speaker of the house, but there was some concern with some conservative uprising over the past couple of days. as we take a live look at the house floor, they just announced the vote. 216 votes for john boehner to be the speaker of the house. nancy pelosi received 164 votes from democrats and then you had three conservative challengers. daniel webster from florida with a late addition if you will. he received 12 votes. louie gomert from texas got three, and ted yoho from florida also got some minimal support. bottom line, john boehner is the speaker of the house for another two years. he has a new republican majority. a bigger republican majority. now he and his allies are ready for get to work, gretchen. >> so t

the three unanimous picks, not surprisingly were henry clay, daniel webster, and john c. calhoun, the famous senators of the precivil war period. and each of those senators is depicted by a portrait in the waiting room off of the area of the senate, i've taken constituents there in -- a number of times. one of the favorite things i like to do as constituents is i have them stand at a certain place and walk across the room and keep their eyes on henry clay's eyes. and henry clay's eyes will follow them all the way across, which is a good way of introducing my constituents to the fact that henry clay, our kentuckian, is a person quite famous in american history and they will always -- the youngsters always remember because the eyes follow them all the way across the way. >> you mentioned before he was from kentucky which was a slave holding state at the time, how important do you think it is to tell the story of the role that slave labor played in building of the capitol? >> i think it is important. it's a reflection on what america was at the time. and we have worked hard

daniel webster got a nomination. one member of congress voted present, others just didn't show up. in the end, the last time this many members of congress voted against e a major party's nominee to be speaker was the year 1816. so, yeah, they didn't make it. this was insult rather than injury. but, still, the most decent against a speaker since before the civil war. but that's just the kind of day it was. and, meanwhile, turning in the back ground while this was now against the speaker of the house, there's the fact that there has been no revolt what so ever to this member of congress ascending to the leadership of the house. the congressman in question, steve skalise is the one on the left here. the one on the right is exklu klux klan member who now admits to speaking to when he was a louisiana republican state rep. the reason the job has opened up is because eric canter, former house majority, was ousted by his own party in a primary this past year. eric canter is the highest ranking jewish republican ever in congress. and when he was forced out, he was the only jewish republican
