nbc's danielle leigh joins us from washington with details on that. danielle, good morning to you. does a compromise look like a long shot right now? >> reporter: richard, good morning. the good news, there's hope. the lines of communication are open this time, but there is this reality, those sticking points on any budget have not changed for republicans or democrats. and as you mentioned, president obama headed back to the capitol today. this time to meet with a tougher audience after meeting with senate democrats yesterday. now house republicans, members of his own party are expressing doubt about how effective he will be at this. also senate democrats releasing their own budget for the first time in about four years, calling for a trillion dollars in new revenues by closing loopholes, but no significant changes to medicare. democrats have rejected the republican plan released yesterday that would have cut the deficit by nearly $5 trillion by repealing president obama's health care law and making changes to those under 54. the one budget we have now to see from the president. th

"today in the bay's" danielle leigh is live on capitol hill where there are moves to give departments a little more leeway on those big cuts. danielle, good morning. >>> jon, good morning. the senate is expected to vote on a temporary budget to fund the government through the rest of the fiscal year. as part of that, there could be some relief. they are implementing across the board spending cuts as a result of the sequester. parts of the bill could give them more power. they have to go through about 100 amendments the senate tacked on to the bill. it was much simpler when it was passed by the house. it will have to go back to the house for approval. john boehner is waiting to see how it will pan out. they have to pass a temporary budget. once they are passed, they have to focus on that next year's budget. they are hoping to get a big deal here to address the deficit. last year, the house and senate put out opposing plans. the good news is that both sides seem ready to work toward a path to compromise. just what that path is is not clear. the president won't be involved in very many b
