i'm danielle nottingham. i'll have that story coming up. a fresh round of talks on a deal to raise the debt ceiling at the white house. this time, both sides are hinting they're open to a compromise. as danielle nottingham reports, that could lead to even bigger spending cuts. >> president obama took control of the debt debate arguing now is the time for lawmakers to do something big. the president proposes that congress agree to raise the nation's debt celling and slash $4 trillion in federal spending over the next decade. that's double the amount of cuts lawmakers originally considered. both parties are sending signals they're ready to compromise on some major issues. top aides to the president say he's ready to support big reductions in medicare and some cuts to social security. >> what we need to do is to have a balanced approach where everything is on the table. >> in return, republican leaders appear to be open to closing some tax loopholes and ending some federal subsidies that benefit big companies. >> everything's on the table exce

danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: president obama called leading lawmakers back to the white house today hoping to break the stalemate over the nation's debt limit. it's their fourth meeting in four days. >> we haven't made best efforts yet because nobody has actually stepped up and said, on the republican side, that we're willing to do what's right for the country. >> this idea that republicans will not vote to increase the debt limit is wrong. we are going to introduce a plan that would give the president an increase in the debt limit. >> on his own... >> reporter: the senate's top republican, mitch mcconnell, is launching the long-shot proposal. since democrats won't take tax increases off the table, it would let the president increase the debt limit on his own and let the majority of congress off the hook. both sides know letting the u.s. default on its loans is catastrophic. the president isn't rejecting the mcconnell plan but agrees with republicans it's a last resort. after weeks of negotiations, tax increases are still the main sticking point. democrats want to close

danielle nottingham reports from the white house. >> reporter: leaders from both political parties insist they're ready to talk about the debt. >> i think the best way for us to reach a deal is for both sides to quit bashing each other and let's sit down, let's have a real proposal before us, let's hash it out. >> what bob corker just said ought to be the beginning of our conversation at the white house. that's exactly the attitude we need on both sides. >> reporter: the president has summoned congressional leaders to the white house thursday and says everyone should leave their ultimatums at the door. >> this will require both parties to get out of our comfort zones and both parties to agree on real compromise. >>> but so far, both sides are sticking to their positions. republicans want any debt limit increase to include $2.4 trillion in spending cuts. democrats agree with some of those cuts but they also want to end some tax breaks for corporations and wealthy americans which the g.o.p. opposes. >> the white house has dismissed the idea of a short- term deal. one that would prevent the

danielle nottingham reports from the white house. >> reporter: senators return to washington tomorrow to try and hammer out a deal over the deficit and some key republicans seem to be cracking open the door to compromise. negotiations between democrats and republicans have been deadlocked over the issue of raising taxes. the gop is adamantly opposed. but senator john mccain signals may be open to negotiations and senator john core in likes the idea of eliminating certain tax loopholes. >> this is a fruitful area for us to work on in a bipartisan. >> both sides agreed on trillion dollars in spending cuts but democrats want something they call revenue razors they include ending tax breaks for oil companies and corporations that send jobs overseas. democrats are also calling for the elimination of subsidies for corporate jet owners. the white house argues ending such tax breaks could save billions of dollars, money that could help bring down the deficit and raise revenue. >> it would be nice if we could keep every tax break. but we can't afford them. >> with both sides struggling to reac

danielle nottingham reports for wjz. >> reporter: congress received a new treasury department report on the new debt crisis before leaving for the 4th of july holiday. it warnings of major risks to the economy if lawmakers fail to raise the debt limit in the next month. lawmakers agreed to get back too the table next week. both sides want deep spending cuts to company any increase in the debt limit. democrats also want to end tax breaks that benefit big corporations and wealthy americans . >> i don't care that they make a billion dollars. why should they pay ten percent less than you'd pay in the tax in the income they make? >> reporter: lawmakers agreed on $1.3 trillion in cuts but they need to come up with $2 trillion in order to raise the debt ceiling. republicans insist the government needs to come up with that money not tax pioneers the idea that if we raise taxes as the president said on millionaires and billionaires that that will make it different in america's debt in term of having a real impact. i think it is disappointing. >> reporter: time is running out. democrats say a

live on capitol hill, danielle nottingham, cbs 5. >>> new information about the three people arrested in connection with the beating of bryan stow. two of those at least have violent pasts. joe vazquez in los angeles tonight with what led police to those suspects. joe. >> reporter: allen, any moment now the mayor and the police chief are about to have a news conference here at lapd headquarters to fill in some of the details. what we have just learned is within the last few minutes the district attorney filed formal charges against three people,two men for the beating of bryan stow, and a woman for accessory for driving the men away from dodger stadium. she has paid her bail and she is out. police made the arrests early yesterday morning in the town of rialto in san bernardino county. two men are in jail charged with mayhem. police also took a woman and a 10-year-old boy into custody. >> it just seems like all of lapd was here. it was like over 30 police officers, lapd, they came in helmets and s.w.a.t. gear. >> reporter: both men are being held on $500,000 bail. they both have violen

danielle nottingham reports for wjz.both sides are still far apart. >> reporter: the 4th of july parade made its way through the streets of washington. but the celebration is not stopping the budget battle. senators are cutting their july recess to work on a deal and the biggest sticking point is taxes. the president wants billions in tax increases to lower the debt. the gop says no way. >> republicans are opposed to any tax hikes, particularly during a fragile economic recovery. >> reporter: senator cornin and other republicans have signaled they are willing to compromise on loopholes but both seem apart from a budget deal. no talks between the parties have been scheduled. republicans are insisting the white house get involved with negotiations, but the president wants congress to first lay the ground work for a deal. >> and i'm confident that democrats and republicans in government can find a way to give some ground. make some tough choices. and put their shoulders to the wheel to get this done for the sake of the coun

daniel nottingham is in washington and explains he's accused of lying on the ropes. >> reporter: rogermens left court after a pretrial hearing. the pitcher learned his case may get help. the judge says he may not allow damaging testimony about steroids from his former teammate. it would be a win for the teammate. >> i've never taken hgh. >> he lied underoath when he testified in 2008. their star witness is his former trainer who spoke at the same hearing. >> i told the truth. i injected the drugs into his body at his direction. >> reporter: he even kept the used needles. that will be key evidence at trial. some of the yankee teammates admit they received injections from him. the judge says he'll likely not allow that. it could influence the jury. he's the latest baseball player to face a jury. barry bonds likely avoided prison time when convicted on one count of obstruction. his trainer refused to testify, chooseing to go to jail instead. clemens case is stronger. he could spend years in prison if found guilty. >>> the trial is expected to last up to six weeks. >>> the fbi is involved
