danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: the biotech company myriad genetics argues its patent on the human gene is valid. the genes can show if a person has a greater chance of breast or ovarian cancer. but opponents argue that genes are part of nature and that no one the right to patent a part of the human body and they claim patents block other biocompanies from testing on the genes which could prevent potentially life saving cancer breakthroughs. the supreme court's ruling could have an impact on other patents for vaccines, antibiotics, stem cells and hormones. biotech companies argue what they're patenting is not a part of nature. >> instead what is being patented are d.n.a. sequences that are isolated away from nature, manipulated in the laboratory, and then used in an industry type of matter. >> reporter: opponents are also complaining that muriad is not allowing patients to get second opinions on its test results. kathleen says she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after a test showed women in her family did not have the predisposition gene. >> they were the only game in town
