reporter danielle nottingham has the latest from the crash site. >> reporter: a metrolink train hit a truck in oxnard. the three cars derailed. the train was traveling from ventura county to los angeles before dawn. at least 28 commuters were injured, four critically. >> the extent of injuries ranges from significant head trauma and extremity trauma to neck and back injuries. >> reporter: the truck caught on fire on impact. but firefighters quickly put out the flames. the train was going 79 miles an hour and the conductor slowed down after seeing the truck on the tracks. >> conductor noticed the cash early and the flashing lights and was able to brake early. >> reporter: authorities say the truck was abandoned on the tracks and the driver was found miles away after the crash. >> he was found later some miles down the road unharmed. >> reporter: police are questioning the driver. investigators from several federal and local agencies along with the train company are looking into the accident. danielle nottingham, cbs news, oxnard, california. >> metro link expects to repair and re-open
