danielle nottingham reports from santa barbara county. >> reporter: smoke rose from the mountains in santa barbara county as firefighters continue to battle a massive fire which broke out saturday afternoon. the flames quickly spread over the weekend, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate nearby campgrounds. including 80 children who were trapped in a camp barracks saturday. >> i pray that if i didn't die, then i would go to church. and then right when i prayed the firefighters came. >> reporter: firefighters are keeping their eye on this campsite. you can see the smoke and hot spots among the downed trees. at the other end of santa barbara county, firefighters are battling another fire which charred at least 24,000 acres. many fled to a red cross shelter for the safety. >> it's overwhelming. sometimes you cry. >> reporter: andrew north of sacramento -- firefighters have made progress in the sierra nevada. at its peak, it threatened 5000 buildings. >> it was coming down. it was wild. we he had to get the hell out. >> reporter: slightly cooler temperatures and diminishing winds are h

danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: a san antonio community gathered to mourn the lives of at least nine people who were traveling inside a tractor trailer found in a walmart parking lot. others are being treated. police believe they uncovered a human trafficking ring. >> our paramedics and firefighters found each one had heart rates, over 130 beats per minute, which, again, they were very hot to the touch. so these people were in the trailer without any kind of water. you're looking at a lot of heatstroke, a lot of dehydration. >> reporter: police found at least 39 people, many in their 20s and 30s inside a trailer that had no air conditioning. the temp had soared to over 100 degrees by day and remained in the 90s at night. >> it's really heartbreaking for people to be left up there to die. >> authorities received a tip from a walmart employee. >> he was approached by someone from that truck asking for water. >> reporter: they're searching for more who are believed to be undocumented immigrants who escaped the trailer on foot and in cars. >> checking the video from the store,

cbs reporter danielle nottingham shows us how it works. >> reporter: as a junior lifeguard in trainingtyana cruz spends a lot of time in the sun. >> i use a lot of sunscreen. i like to reload on the sunscreen every two hours. >> reporter: the 16-year-old says she is worried about getting skin cancer. so she is trying this high-tech wearable called the my uv patch to help monitor her sun exposure. it contains photosensitive dyes that change color when exposed to ultraviolet rays. users scan the patch with a smartphone app, and then they receive sun safety tips based on the results. >> so this is a way to tell them when to reapply, this is a way to tell them that there is sun damage that's going on even though you don't see it. >> reporter: this dermatologist says sun damage is cumulative. so whether you use the patch or other app-connected wearables, awareness can help prevent skin cancer. >> so the wearables have a potential to engage someone like a teenager or a child to where they can understand that there's a link between how much sunscreen they put on, how much time they stay outsi

danielle nottingham, cbs news. >>> back here in this district a dramatic rescue overnight in northwest washington, a man became trapped in a trash chute, yes, a trash chute in the 700 block of seventh street northwest at 3 a.m. today. our stephanie ramirez is live at the building where this all happened. so, stephanie, just what happened? >> reporter: there is bringing the jersey accent out of me, nasty, nasty, nasty. it happened at the residences of burglary place in chinatown early this morning. the best part was my photographer dry heaving after he stuck his camera inside that trash chute. there he goes there. take a look. here it is. this is the trash chute d.c. fire and ems tweeted a few photos of today. you see a red portion on the that bottom. the d.c. fire spokesperson says a man was sitting on top of that inside at the time. they used a harness haul method to pull him out. how did this happen? i'm told the man apparently thought he dropped his girl friend's cell phone inside when he threw out the trash. so he decided to take a look, placed his hand on the back wall of the chut
