nbc's danielle leigh joins us live with the latest on capitol hill. danielle, what is the datest in terms of what we can expect in the next coming days and the likelihood that they can reach a deal? >> reporter: mara, good morning. well, this meeting that is the last-minute meeting at the white house is going to be integral. they need to see progress in this meeting if they're going to get a deal done before midnight on monday. as you know, the senate came back early from the christmas holiday yesterday. but they didn't seem able to compromise. they continued the bickering. the house wasn't even here. they're not even in play yet. they're now coming back on sunday. so we really need to see congressional leaders see some kind of a plan that can be voted on before that december 31st deadline. lawmakers say it's getting decreasingly unlikely that's going to happen. many have serious doubts about whether or not they will get a deal before the new year, although it is still possible, many think a deal will more likely come early in the new year, mara. >> a

washington, dc, now, senator daniel inouye who passed away days away is being honored on capitol hill and there is senator bob doles republican presidential candidate, as i am sure you know who has arrived with harry reid who is the majority leader, the senate majority leader and the two are to pay respects this afternoon to daniel inouye of hawaii. this has been going on for hours. they change the guard every half hour and notables come to pay their respects. senator inouye, of hawaii, first served us as a soldier in world war ii and was a senator, get this, for 50 years. inouye was a war hero. he lost his right arm while leading the platoon into battle in italy and awarded the medal of honor and died on monday of breathing complications at age of 88.

daniel inouye began his public career in service at the age of 17. when he entered the army after the attack on pearl harbor. he served with incredible distinction, earning the nation's highest military medal for actions in italy. as a member of the senate, dan inouye continued his fierce defense of his state and his partnership with alaska. my predecessor of. [laughing] senator stevens new senator inouye is his brother. they were together and produce much good for both of our states. that will last for generations. when i was elected elected to the sophist senator inouye was one of the first members to reach out and ask how he could help. the unique thing about senator inouye was always his quiet approach to all the issues. he gave me quite advice and help me learn how this place works. many times i would be down here the podium in the well here waiting for the votes to be tallied or members to vote in senator inouye would come in and stand at the edge there and look up and just say, how is it going alaska? we would have a brief conversation and usu
