[ light laughter ] and then it might be difficult. yeah. hey, you're such a great director, but i have to ask, as a director, did you grow up like directing like crazy home movies or were you a little kid that had like a camera running around or -- >> no, i think that's one of the differences between americans -- well, not here, but spielberg and people like that when they were kids running around with 8-mils -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> --cameras. we never had that in britain. it was always -- if you were any good, you went into music. you would join the band. you know played instruments. i couldn't. >> jimmy: oh, really? >> i was tone-deaf, so i couldn't do that. so eventually i went into the theater eventually actually. that was the quick, easiest thing to get into. >> jimmy: really? >> yes. >> jimmy: acting? >> no, no, no. i mean i did a bit of acting. i've got quite a loud voice, so they picked me for all the parts at the beginning 'cause i could reach back t

that film was brought to the big screen by british director danny boyle. now he has a completely different kind of story set in the american state of utah starring james franco. >> i am something of a hero. >> everything will be ok. >> are you ok? >> "127 hours," is a true story and the subject is a rock climber. he enjoys thrilling adventure. all goes wrong when a bolder moves entraps his right hand. he ends up having to amputate his arm to free himself after being stuck for five days. for much of the film, we are down there can find with him experience and his agony. a couple of years ago, you were running around and you are promoting "slumdog millionaire ." why did you want to do this kind of movie? >> this was a wonderful opportunity. when we were doing the last movie, i saw "the wrestler," with the incredible focus on it york and i remember thinking that i wanted to make a film like that. -- with the incredible focus on the lead and i wanted to make a film like that. this was a great opportunity. >> james, how much of a challenge was this? it might ha

. >> why okay danny boyle? why okay this version of this movie?ry being shared with people. that we also inspire audiences instead of using it as a horror film or something that would have perhaps left people in a hole. i wanted people to be uplifted with it, to have that hope in the end. >> because we're showing pictures of you going back to these very locations. you were on location at least once a week to make sure it was awe ten particular it. >> was also have their invitation. that's the way danny made the film. i wanted my involvement. >> and there was this aspect in the point in which you need to make this life and death decision of cutting off your own people. and some of the screening people are getting sick. some were crying. >> i was crying. >> how many times have you seen it? >> ten times. last night i watched it. they are tears of gratitude really. to be there watching it with my wife or with my mom. the closest people. those are the people who -- that's why i got out of there. >> right. >> was because of the love that i have with the

talked to 30 directors about the movie that made them want to become a director, so i talked to danny boyle about apocalypse now and kimberly pierce about the godfather, and was a great joy and i sort of did it in tandem with this book because as these gentlemen know it is hard to spend that much time with such a dark subject. so movies. [laughter] i don't know if i will never get over the story of dominique and green. when i gave a presentation i never get through of breaking down. i thought when i started giving the presentations that eventually, but i do feel like i am reliving parts of the life every time i go back and recreate in my own mind and talk about. i doubt i will ever write a book like this again. my books are honestly written for the history books are written for generally educated people, they are of different vocabulary which i don't for a second withhold. i figure you can hack it or not, but this book i try to make as simple as possible and short as possible. i knew that people would shy away from it. who the hell wants to read it about possess that. [laughter] so i made i
