[ applause ] >> thank you very much. and let me just say how delighted i am to be here. as a matter of fact, the last time i was at a meeting, i was so inspired by a woman who made a presentation of a book that she has written that i have been trying to get that book into school districts all around illinois and other places throughout the country. and actually had her at my home in chicago for the kwanzaa celebration that we do each year to present to our guests. so it's always a pleasure and a delight to see and be a part of looks at the development and evolution of our country. and to think of how magnificent it really is when we go back to where it was when it started, how it got started, all of the different people who have come from places throughout the world, all of the challenges that we have had, the contributions that so many different people have made. i decided, for example, this year, as we celebrate in my community african

i view colonel danny davis. i read his article in the armed forces journal and aware of his other comments. i am sure they were not well received in some quarters but as a hero that spoke out approximate the troubles we have in our policies in afghanistan, what happened in the past weekend in a very secure area where brave americans were killed by people in afghan uniforms, i know it is troubling to all of us. i think your comments that we were prepared to move forward in 2014 unlike some of my colleagues, i would like to see you move quickly rather than slowly and encourage looking at our policy there to find a way to ensure our security having achieved many of our goals, assure our security without as broad a footprint as we have today. i thank you, mr. secretary. >> i appreciate that. with regards to afghanistan, we really have i think turned a corner in 2011 with regards to afghanistan. we were able to weaken the taliban. we were able to reduce the level of violence there. the afghan army for the first time

incidents and again we saw today not only is it worse than it's worse than we even imagined and danny davis said this to i'm friends with danny full to school . but danny's been telling the truth about what's going on and michael reported on some of the manipulation going on all back to look at a colonel home saying i don't know lieutenant colonel holmes i've met with him might i trust that the reporting was wrong with that said there are reasons why do you do continues to put this myth out there we're making progress because they've invested in this all these generals to include betray us now it's put his brand on this so any admission of failure during a political year especially will look bad for the administration and they're not the only ones that invested in it right i think that a lot of people would be of sad to hear something like that when it's our blood our money that's going into it and they just want to say faith in the new obama today. sort of called for they listed all the president's foreign policy you know the one that was missing afghanistan they did not mention afghanista

i'm delighted to be on the floor as well with another leader in education, the honorable danny davis. and i will say to you that i took the oath and this whole four days when i was in my district, everywhere i went i touched the hearts of young and old when i reported to them that while their children are struggling, working hard, trying to get good grades and higher education, and when they go good faith took out loans of about 2.8% just a few years back, somewhere between that and 3.4%, and now within days this is going to double, and that we are here fighting in washington to ensure that the doors of opportunity are not closed. so i think it is very important, you're absolutely right, to take note that the potential or soon to be republican nominee for president has recognized the foolishness unfortunately of stalling in this house, that we have not simply passed a bipartisan effort, your legislation that i am a co-sponsor of, that simply indicates that we will not see the doubling of those interest rates. i have universities, if i down the call them all, from the university of hou
