i've got danny freeman, who travels with the sanders campaign, on the phone, as well as thompson and walsh here. but danny, thinking about the races tomorrow in washington, hawaii, what's the energy there right now? >> reporter: i mean, the energy is just excitement. there's excitement and enthusiasm which basically comes with the majority of sanders' events. but it certainly is today. a baseball field is often a community event and this is a large community of people who are coming together to have their friday night out, have a beer and support bernie sanders. and there's one interesting thing. they're still waiting for people to come through all the security. the reality is we would cover huge bernie sanders events the last summer and fall 2016 and getting those 10s of thousands of people into the venus wasn't as hard back before they had secret service. i think they underestimated the challenge it has been now that they have secret surervice of actually stacking these crowds like they're used to. even in smallerpl places like vancouver, washington, they couldn't process them fast

danny freeman joins us from phoenix. hallie jackson is in tucson.bout two hours southeast of phoenix. tony is in fountain hills. that is where we begin, tony covering the trump campaign. another good morning to you, tony. the protests have been following the campaign. do we expect more of them today? >> we do, alex. i'm here in fountain park which is part of the planned community of fountain hills designeded by the same guy who designed disneyland. it's the selected by donald trump's campaign. it's believed to be selected by donald trump's campaign because it's the hometown of sheriff joe apaoai who is synonymous with the immigration fight here in arizona. before trump made a big issue out of it lawmakers here in this state and other elected officials did as well. sheriff joe is going to be campaigning alongside donald trump today in addition to running security because this is his hometown, his jurisdiction. and protesters have already announced that hundreds will show up and will take a firm stance against the intolerance that they see lining up a

joining me right now on the phone from portland is nbc campaign embed, danny freeman. us a sense of how all of this fits together with an eventual trump, or eventual, i should say, sanders' victory? >> thank you, chris. i think that you can tell how important this western swing of the state is, particularly the state of washington, as y'all were discussing earlier, by a little funny moment that happened moments ago in this speech, when senator sanders through this huge crowd of thousands here in portland, oregon, said, make sure you come out to caucus tomorrow in washington. and made a bit of a squinting face, realizing the error he made, and corrected himself very quickly. but that's just, again, he is totally focused on running up the score in washington, hoping to close the gap in delegates with secretary clinton. the massive lead that she has amassed over the past couple of contests. another thing, though, he's in portland, oregon, right here, you can imagine, is bernie sanders country in so many ways. there were people who were camped out in the very early hours o

among them, danny freeman, on the trail with bernie sanders. let's talk a little bit about this.idn't think you would be around this long. give us a little sense of what it's like to be inside that campaign. say tuesday night when he won that upset victory in michigan. >> not only did i think we wouldn't be this competitive this long on the sanders campaign trail but a lot of people on the team didn't think, coming out of michigan, would be able to say they add major upset in that race against hillary clinton. we are in florida, okay, first rally earlier this morning in gainesville. here is our rally right now they are weighing out. people are still coming out in droves. they are so excited it see bernie sanders and you can bet that that win this michigan certainly helped increase the enthusiasm amongst supporters. i want to talk about that night in particular. when we got to hotel in miami where bernie sanders was going to stay, it was very quiet. he had a rally in miami beforehand. no mention of michigan in that entire speech. all of a sudden we were sitting down, dwindling pre
