danya bacchus on the front lines of the pacific palisades fire. stay safe out there. >>> well, wildfires aren't a weather phenomenon like hurricanes and tornadoes, but they are directly linked to weather conditions like wind and rain. we get more on the anatomy of these fires from cbs news meteorologist rob marciano. >> reporter: l.a. residents in a panic, desperate to save their home. >> you're not going to be able to put that out. >> reporter: during an unprecedented explosive wildfire in the middle of winter. winds to hurricane strength, some nearly 90 miles per hour, scattering embers miles away, sparking more flames. not something that typically happens in january because los angeles should be well into the rainy season. but downtown l.a. has received just over a quarter of an inch of rain since may. the second driest stretch in nearly 150 years. >> our wildfires are definitely getting worse. we have had a very large increase in the size and the intensity of wildfire, and that is driven in part by a warming climate. >> reporter: the drought d

danya bacchus in pacific palisades. thanks, and stay safe out there. >>> some residents are furious that more could have been done to prevent this disaster. and l.a.'s mayor is facing questions over the timing of her trip to africa which he cut short to return to a city that's already burning and also about cutbacks the city made to its fire department. cbs' jonathan vigliotti has more. >> reporter: when you see these images over pacific palisades, it's clear, the extent of loss is horrifying. what's also coming into focus are some hard truths. a month before the disaster, l.a.'s fire chief warned of the impact of millions of dollars in budget cuts. the city's fire commission sent mayor karen bass a report december 17th claiming the fire department's ability to respond to large-scale emergencies such as wildfires is significantly diminished, increasing risks to both public and firefighter safety. >> i don't know if they are trying to get reinforcements, but they didn't stop. >> reporter: what we saw repeatedly. >> this

danya bacchus joins us. are firefighters making any progress here? >> reporter: good morning, michael. it's hard to say if firefighters are making any progress. that's because this situation is extremely overwhelming for them. so much so that for the first time in 19 years, the los angeles fire department has put out a call to all off-duty officers to call in for their availability. right now at this moment this morning, the focus is on protecting lives and property. firefighters pushed to the brink while now trying to contain multiple fast-spreading brush fires that have engulfed homes. >> this is right at my doorstep. >> reporter: and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. >> let's get out of here. whatever i lose i lose. >> reporter: the massive fire in los angeles exploded in a matter of hours, leaving some residents and news crews to run to safety. >> got to go. >> reporter: hundreds of motorists and their pets had no choice but to abandon their cars on the highway. >> there's a lot of fire right there. that's why we were comin

danya bacchus. thank you so much. be safe. >> that is tough out there and just seeing some of the hotspots behind her and jessica, what does it look like right now in southern california? >> they're still dealing with strong winds and continue to watch relative humidity decrease too in the next couple of hours. not the best fire weather conditions currently and that's what i want to start with too. heading to southern california we saw this in november and we're seeing it again in december and now january. as we take a look at the elevated fire outlook, widespread through the region our fire weather outlook, what we're seeing is that critical and all the way up to extreme risk in communities up near santa clarita. the exact same area two of the fires are currently burning. now we continue to keep a close eye on this specifically when it comes to the winds because they're pushing offshore. these strong santa ana winds anywhere up to around 55 miles per hour right now will stay strong throughout the next couple of hours

i spoke to cbs news correspondent danya bacchus who is in la.the fire has had there and across the city. i am in pacific palisades. it is a neighbourhood in los angeles. and we have been able to drive through the neighbourhoods here, the different areas and see that level of destruction caused by the pacific palisades fire. i mean, you are going through neighbourhoods and seeing home after home levelled. we also went to an area known as the village here, it has a lot of different shops and restaurants and grocery stores. all of that is completely destroyed. we were able to travel to altadena california, where fire has killed five people and exploded to more than 10,000 acres there. we were walking through the business district. i mean, you can't even begin to recognise the buildings that once stood there. some of them are still smouldering as we were walking through this evening. so right now what we are seeing is a lot of people really taking in the damage that has been done by all of these fires. also tonight, still a very active fire scene. e

danya bacchus. what is happening where you are? ~ ., ., , are?am now the winds have died down significantly - have died down significantly which is good news because that means firefighters could make progress in the fight against multiple fires are burning in la. even tonight, throughout the night actually, we have seen other fires start to pop up seen other fires start to pop up in additions to the one that we have been reporting for the last 2a hours. there was one the start in the hollywood hills area of los angeles that prompted evacuations and we once again saw thousands of people trying to leave, gridlocked streets but thankfully, fire crews were able to get a handle on that fire pretty quickly. also this morning, what we are seeing is just to the level of destruction that has been caused by these fires. we have travelled to pacific palisades where the policy fires were burning and we travelled there and we saw home after home wiped out and we went to an area where there were businesses and shops and those things were unrecognisable so wha
