darcy spencer is at the scene. darcy? >> reporter: doreen, i was able to confirm within the last several minutes that police have recovered that vehicle. but here's the -- the bizarre twist. they say that the children were not in that car. it was locationed in southeast washington and they say, in fact there are no car seats in the car. they're investigating to try to figure out what exactly did happen here. now we are at the exxon station. this is where the woman called police. but the incident happened just down the street in the 8400 block of central avenue. the mom was apparently pumping gas, at some point, a dodge intrepid pulls pup. suspect got out. jumped into her car taking off with her three children inside the car. now police tell me that she got in the car with a witness to this incident and they tried to chase the car. they lost sight of it. that's huh they ended up here at this exxon station in the 5400 block of central avenue in seat pleasant. here at the exxon station, they pulled over. she called police. a

darcy? >> reporter: jim, there are a lot of questions surrounding this disappearance, but relatives tell me there's one thing they know for sure. that he did not run away. they say it's something he's never done before, and that is not in his character. that homecoming game played right here at his high scale ho and that's something he would never want to miss. ♪ dozens of students and parents turned out for a vigil for missing teen brian glenn. the 17-year-old senior did not show up for the wt woodson homecoming football game. he's a kicker for the team. >> i saw one of this friends kicking a kickoff that usually he does, and i almost broke down then. it was tough. >> reporter: glenn has been missing nearly a week. the teen's disappearance considered highly unusual by authorities. he was not known to be a runaway. his parents are beyond worried. >> he's out there somewhere. and the right information just needs to get connected. >> it's so unusual. there's just no indications that he was --

darcy spencer joins us now live from the scene. darcy? >> reporter: jim, i can tell you, this was a very, very serious accident involving a prince george's county police officer. all we can tell you at this point is that it's a male officer. he was taken to the hospital close to the crash scene. his cruiser crashed into a utility pole here at surratts road and branch avenue. there was a second vehicle involved. you can see the white vehicle there. a lot of serious damage there as well. both the officer as well as the person who was in the second vehicle were taken here to southern maryland hospital. we do not have an update at this point on the condition of the officer as well as that other person who was taken to the hospital. now, prince george's county police are not providing a lot of details about the circumstances surrounding this incident. we don't know if the officer was responding to a call, or exactly what was happening at the time of the crash. the chief of police is here, and a press conference is scheduled for 6:15 at the hos

darcy spencer spoke with the diver and she joins us with her story. darcy? >> reporter: jim, cheryl mcwilliams said at first she thought it was a boat. but that didn't make any sense. soon it became clear it was a shark. it was swimming right toward her. 75 feet beneath the surface. fortunately for her, whale sharks feed on plankton, not pele. >> that's me breathing. because i'm swimming so hard. >> reporter: the diver you see in this incredible video is cheryl mcwilliams. she had an unexpected close encounter with a whale shark off the florida coast last month. what was your initial thought when you saw it? >> oh, my goodness. look, it's a whale shark. how amazing is this, you know, how lucky. >> reporter: mcwilliams is a fairfax county firefighter and dive instructor. she was on a dive off the gulf of mexico 30 miles off the coast. she was exploring a shipwreck on an artificial reef. >> it's like almost seeing a school bus underwater. it's 25 feet long. and it's just enormous. you're just -- you're awe-struck. >> reporter: mcwilliams said she was not scare

news 4s, darcy spencer is live, tales of the attack are really disturbing aren't they?reporter: that's right. montgomery county and park police are here processing evidence as thart part of the investigation. the crime scene 100 yard into the wooded area on the trail. the victim remains in the hospital tonight with a serious head injury. a 21-year-old jogger the victim of a violent attack that may have been attempted sexual assault. it happened along capital crescent trail in bethesda, 7:00. >> she slowed and stopped for a group of deer crossing the trail when struck from behind in the head. >> reporter: police say the woman was knocked unconscious dragged off the trail into the wood. when she awoke she began finding her way out. another jogger came along and helped her. >> a male jogger was passing by, assisted her to this address, where 911 was called and police arrived. >> reporter: the victim was taken to the hospital with a serious head injury. police set up a staging area in the 4900 block of brookeway drive. an entry point to the trail. police say the attack happ

darcy? >> reporter: that woman lives in a home right off of the trail. she says other people have come to her home before seeking help after maybe having a bicycle accident. but nothing like this. the attack happened right here along the trail. you can see the crime scene tape here. the woman was dragged into a wooded area and sexually assaulted. today park police officers on hortback and bike are at the scene of a sexual assault on a young woman jogging here sunday evening. >> it feels like crime encroaching on our beautiful neighborhood. and suburbs. >> reporter: this was the first house the victim came to after the attack. about 100 yards from the scene. the woman who lives here found the victim crying and bleeding from a head wound. >> of course, she was crying, because she wanted the paramedics to be here right away, you know. and i always say, they are coming, they are coming, you know. >> reporter: police say the victim was attacked around 7:00 in the evening sunday, knocked out by a man who then sexually assaulted her. when the victim woke up, sh

reporting live in clinton, darcy spencer, news4. >> darcy, thank you. >>> the investigation continues tonight after police say a man threw a molotov cocktail inside the ballston common mall in arlington. this is exclusive video as police took a man into custody outside the courthouse metro station. police say he has not been arrested but they are questioning him. news4's derrick ward is in arlington with what else police found inside the mall. derrick? >> reporter: indeed, people are coming by, and they're very curious why there are fbi vehicles outside the ballston common mall. think about it, at noon when the food court is its most crowded, someone tries to firebomb the place. now, someone is in custody. and we don't know exactly what the motive was, but the person may have intended to drop more than one of those devices. fortunately no one was hurt. around 3:00, police took this man into custody near the courthouse metro station in arlington. someone reported him, saying he smelled of gasoline. a police bomb technician went through the man's belongings carefully, just hours before

darcy spencer is outside the courthouse. brooks won't be doing any jail time, right? >> reporter: he certainly won't the he got two years of probation, escaping any jail time right here in federal court this afternoon. initially, he lied to investigators, but then had a change of heart, he began to cooperate. and that's what made the difference. we caught up with him this afternoon as he left the courthouse. but he had no comment. howard brooks the 64-year-old former campaign aide to mayor vince gray was sentenced to serve 24 months on probation, and complete 200 hours of community service. he escaped jail time. that after admitting to lying to federal investigators involving the 2010 mayoral campaign. he said he helped funnel money to brown, who was also running for mayor. brown says he was paid to stay in the race, and attack then mayor adrian fente who lost the democratic primary to gray. brooks pleaded guilty to that charge, that he lied to investigators. since then, he provided substantial assistance to government authorities, and it was for that reason prosecuto

darcy? >> reporter: that officer was based here at the district four station. today police released very few details about the circumstances surrounding this fatal crash. we know he was not on duty at the time and it's possible that another motorist may have pulled out in front of him. >> it's with a very heavy heart that i come before you tonight. >> 28-year-old officer, a veteran died when his cruiser crashed into a utility poll. it happened at branch avenue in clinton. he was off duty at the time. police are investigating the possibility that he had been cut off in traffic. >> we have witnesses saying that the officer was cut off and we're not at a point yet to say that's what cause the accident. that's two hours after he got off duty this white suv was also involved. the driver was take on the the hospital with non-life threaten injuries. >> you heard a loud crash and it sounded like an explosion and after that you didn't hear anything. >> police recon trukted the scene to figure out how and why it happened. >> i feel for the family. i'm a family man myself
