darcy, are they still keeping people out of the hotel? >> reporter: right now people are not allowed to go back into the hotel to stay because all of the utilities have been turned off. but they are being allowed to go in, you can see here, some people going in to retrieve some of their belongings as well as some of their pets. people travel with pets nowadays. but they have to come back out. as you said, nine people were transported from the hotel here this afternoon after dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide were detected here. i'm told that eight of the nine people are hotel employees, and many of them worked in the laundry room. and that's where they believe that the source of this carbon monoxide poisoning is. four of the victims were taken to shock trauma in baltimore. their injuries are considered to be serious. fortunately, everyone is expected to be okay. now, the fire department here in anne arundel county had to evacuate the entire building, all seven floors. some people were here. other people were not here at the time.

darcy spencer is live at the scene. darcy? >> well, just a heartbreaking story here in southeast washington today. we wrapped up a press briefing with d.c. police, and they are confirming that the little girl is 8 years old, and lives right here in the neighborhood. she was shot and wounded just after 3:00 this afternoon, and police say that right now she is in surgery clinging to life. let me tell you what her grandmother told me a few moments ago. she says that little girl was walking from this building here to her aunt's house from this building here to her mother's house this afternoon just after 3:00 when the shots rang out. the d.c. police at the briefing said that when the shooting happened, there was a group of people running from the scene. now, this is a gated community here there. is a gate that you have to go through to get through, as well as the fencing here, so it is not an easy place to get into and out of unless you in fact live here or are let in. d.c. police saying that at this point they have no lookout inf
