darcy spencer spoke to a neighbor and joins us with an update into the murder investigation. darcy? >> reporter: erika, one of those victims was 60 years old. he lived less than a half mile from the murder scene here. friends, family members and neighbors trying to figure out why he was here at the house and why he was murdered. >> so devastating when it happens to someone you a great guy and was so close to him. >> reporter: this man, grieving the sudden and tragic loss of his neighbor, alan. the 60-year-old kept a meticulous home and yard, rode a harley and worked every day. >> he was a great, humble guy. very down to earth. if he knows you, he will do all he can for you. >> reporter: he was among the five people shot in this home in district heights friday night. three of them died. carl carlita gray was home at the time. two were shot and critically wounded. >> my sister -- was the friendliest person you would ever meet. i just don't -- i don't know how i'm going to go through everything without seeing her again. >> reporter: police say the shootings do not appear to be random.

darcy? >> reporter: jim, this tree branch was so large many people initially believe that the entire tree had fallen down here. take a look at where we are on 9th street northwest on constitution avenue. one lane is blocked off. two people were taken to the hospital. we caught up with one man who was driving through the area when the tree crashed on top of his car. what were you thinking when this happened? this man was driving here on 9th street headed toward 395 when he heard the branch crack. >> all of a sudden, the tree was falling down and just crushed my get out of the way and neither could the pedestrians who were standing here at 9th and constitution at the national mall. the branch fell on two of them. good samaritans lifted the branch and freed the victims before medics arrived. they were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. >> a lot of people here, so they came to their aid. >> reporter: parts of 9th street by the sculpture garden were shut down as workers cut up the tree br

darcy? >> reporter: well, chris, we just got an update from cathy lanier just a few minutes ago, confirming that four men have been shot and wounded. like you said, a bike officer also injured responding to the scene. we want to show you where this investigation is taking place. right across the street here on north capitol street in northwest d.c. right outside the big ben liquor store. that is sort of a landmark in this area. if you're able to see through the traffic onto the sidewalk, there are multiple evidence markers there. there was a lot of gunfire here. we were told the gunfire opened on one man, shooting him multiple times, then shot three they were all transported to the hospital where they are all stable. they're all expected to survive. police are working on surveillance video in this area of the gunmen. the gunmen after the shooting simply ran away. there is no lookout for any car or vehicle in this case. now let's listen to the chief as she talks about what happened with this

darcy? >> reporter: that's right. it was a pretty incredible scene. the kutz bridge has been under construction for the last several weeks. it has pretty much died off right now because of all this rain. now the construction workers saw the suspect run by with no shoes on. they jumped into action. the suspect wheeled to an ambulance after a takedown on the kutz bridge. workers doing bridge construction tackled and held the man until police arrived. >> they did a good job by detaining him because he put everybody at risk. >> reporter: the suspect told witnesses he wanted to die. police say he continued to resist as they cuffed him and loaded him into the ambulance. police say the suspect first crashed his car into a bus by the lincoln memorial. then when we sidewalk by the bridge, the car broke down. he allegedly then tried to carjack several cars. that's when the construction workers held him for police. >> when police did arrive on the scene, he continued to be combative. one of our officers did deploy a taser to subdue the subject. he's in our custo

darcy spencer is live in northeast with more from her family tonight. darcy?> reporter: she was carrying groceries into her southeast washington home two weeks ago when she was gunned down at her doorstep shot six times in the back. her cousin, who doesn't want to be iedentified, said she was still recovering from an aneury aneurysm. >> he found out on the news. her brother was calling her as she was being shot. it's a big tragedy to us because she was a loving and fun person. >> reporter: she was killed in broad daylight. four hours earlier five blocks away a man was police say the crimes could be connected, but the family has no idea how and why. >> we don't know of anything like that. that was a shock to us to hear that. tracy wasn't involved in anything because she could barely take care of herself. >> reporter: the murders happened on a day when five were shot in the middle of the day in d.c. vince gray says murders in the ward have triple compared to last year. >> just an eerie, grisly scene to be a part of. once again, it speaks to gun violence. >> repo

darcy spencer spoke to neighbors who are still trying to understand what is happening in their community. >> just so devastating when it happens to someone that you knew was a great guy, that was so close to hit. it hit you in a bad spot. >> reporter: this man grieving the loss of his neighbor, allen rowlett. he kept a meticulous home and worked every day. >> a great humble guy. very down to earth. if he knows you, he'll do all he can for you. >> reporter: rowlett was among the five people shot at this home in orleans avenue in district heights. three died. carlina gray was also killed. she lived in the home with her boyfriend. he was walking the dog at the time. he and another person were shot and critically wounded. >> my sister was the friendliest person you'd ever meet. i just don't know how i'm going to go through every day without seeing her again. >> reporter: police say the shootings do not appear to be random, but they haven't released any information about the gunman or possible motive. >> having something tragic like this happen is heartbreaking. we need to stop the foolishnes
