. >>> let's get a check of our first alert weather with meteorologist darren peck. what's it looking like? i had lightning at my house in concord last night. >> you were not the only one. we have pictures of that last night. it was the 9:00 hour. there is a chance we can see that again today. look at the sky. those are clouds, not the marine layer. those are higher clouds from thunderstorms to our east. when we switch our view from looking at the salesforce tower and go to first alert doppler, look at the line of showers trying to come our way. there is a 20% chance from now to tonight that we see another round of isolated showers like that come through the bay. here is futurecast. we'll take it from now and slow this down in the next hours and high resolution rapid refresh forecast, one of the more reliable for the short term, says it is possible you can get isolated showers and maybe even an isolated thunderstorm through afternoon and evening. it doesn't mean it happens at that location at that time but it does mean the ingredients will stay with us. it could be a

meteorologist darren peck is here tracking uncivil condition around the bay area. i was telling you i saw lightning lat last night coming back into the city from sonoma. it's crazy. >> 9:00 hour, coming through th east a. a lot of people saw that. we had great pictures las night. we may see that again. the sky looks interesting. look at the clouds, if we put this i a time-lapse they are building vertically. we don't get clouds like that here often. holding convective clouds. and there wa rain with it. let's switch from looking at the view from the top of the tower to first alert doppler. there's a lot of lightning. some of that is getting pushed toward the bay area and within the last hour w have seen another cell with rain across the northern most part of sonoma county. this is the last 45 minutes. that is live. we are not seeing any lightning detected in that one, but the possibility is there over the next five to six hours with more just like that to com across the bay. we will put it in futurecast and let it placer tonight. there is still going t be some of thi

meteorologist darren peck is a closer look. >>> we will see a little more smoke moving into the bay area throughout wednesday, so we are looking at moderate air quality today, a deep chance of read on here, showing an increase in smoke, and we will probably be looking at more unhealthy air as a result of that. being driven along by northern winds, which in addition to transporting more smoke from wildfires to the north, this will create a little bit of a fire weather concerned, because those northerly winds coming across the north bay mountains will tend to dry out the landscape a little more. so we actually had a red flag warning in place, now, not for the bay area, but just on the outskirts of it. that is something to keep an eye on, the first of those we have had this year. it is a very fall -like pattern, which fits the theme of another fall -like pattern: cold air coming our way after that. from the gulf of alaska, this is where we see our storms come from in the winter. here comes the first little blob of cool air, having developed in the gulf of alaska. watch it spill down our way

first alert meteorologist darren peck is joining me, not a great day to be outside. >> and i will show you one other way of visualizing it, look at the map that shows all the air-quality sensors across the bay. there's a lot more orange showing up, a lot more locations have gone into the unhealthy for sensitive groups, that is the view looking down on golden gate bridge. if we plot it with all of the purple air-quality sensors, we haven't seen that much orange on this map yet this season and it is bay area wide. the general forecast is moderate but there's a lot of places out there today that are reading unhealthy for sensitive groups and even some that are just flat out unhealthy. that is not good for your lungs and i can show you there is a good plume coming our way. and the forecast will stay like this for the next couple of days, but we are still going to be stuck in general. look at the high-resolution smoke forecast, yellows, oranges and red, it doesn't really start to clear out until we get there that looks great, but that is not until friday. so, the big picture will show us th

as for what happens next, here is darren peck. >> this looks really messy on radar because the national weather service has it on its most sensitive settings. most of this is nothing but you can see a very thin line of thunderstorms moving across contra costa county. you see the darker shades of green with the yellow and orange going right across contra costa county and into marin county? if we clear out most of the clutter, you see what the radar is reading on top. the bottom line is that was a well-defined and somewhat confined line of storms that went through that part of the bay. we saw this coming at 6:00. we were watching the thunderstorms being blown off the sierra and it did not look likely that they would hold together and get here, but one of the forecast models that was more bullish than the others and said you are going to have some was this one. high-revolution rapid refresh. as we get into tomorrow morning, same spot. another line of isolated thunderstorms moving through parts of contra costa county and marin county. very limited. it is not going to happen exactly like tha

but darren says there are changes on the way. >> yeah. a big cool down. by the time we get into this week, daytime high, some of it will be as much as 20 degrees below where you were today. just to set the stage, we are putting together behind us at least from the official climate standpoint. the numbers are in. and what would average be? you can pick it out here to spotlight the hottest parts of the bay, antioch, pleasanton, santa rosa. the averages. let's switch, so you can see where they came in and there is a theme on there for concord and pleasanton as you all did it at 100 degrees. that makes sense and the hottest part of the bay. let's change our perspective a little bit and you can see how you did in places like napa, oakland, san jose. but still the story is the same in terms of 10 degrees above average for today. this is the peak. the numbers will start to come down as we will look at the big cool down to feel better for everybody. we also need to talk about air quality. oakland, you're in that one place right now that's reading moderate levels
