darren. >> earning their money. darren. >> that's good thing for jonathan livingston's seagull.d that has been the pattern for really the last two days anyway. because monday we started out and there was no marine layer. yesterday, never left. and today, it's back with the same intensity that it had. so the theme for wednesday is going to be another marine layer gray day. with a little bit of marine layer mist mixed in and watch the futurecast on the time there. this is taking us through the next several hours and this is not a rainout. but it is going to be a little bit of mist if you are near the coast. or near any bay area hills from this. it's the kind of rain that you cannot measure. because doesn't really full in enough amounts for that. but it is enough rain that you can get some, you know, the wipers have to go on on the car. don't be surprised if you do. already happened for north bay communities and certainly happen along the coast and any of the hills throughout the course of this morning. and the temperatures temperatures are relatively comfortable. temperatures on h

and darren, have the tides turned?g to get the sunny exciting and exhilarating weather that we had through the weekend and yesterday. >> tides have turned. tides have turned. and if people got used to 80 degrees and sunny inland, you have to take like ten degrees off that today. we'll top out in the low 70s and if you are inland and it will be mid 60s for much of the bay and yes i think each of the next few mornings are going to look like that. you can kind of see what it -- what it has for us as we take a look at that view from our vantage point looking over from the mark hopkins hotel. that's time lapse actually so we can watch some of the clouds just kind of hanging out there. and it a little breezy near the coast. take a look at the visualization on where wind speeds are. this is -- it's almost like we're transitioning into summer in some ways with this. we're getting the big marine layer in the morning and it's getting windy near the water and coast side in the bay, not necessarily terribly windy if you are inland

. >> first alert meteorologist darren peck tracking changes as the week moves along. hey, darren. >> guys, it's going to be kind of dramatic actually because the view we were just seeing from our camera on treasure island and out our windows here and if you've been outside today, you know. this is a spectacular, sunny, low 70-degree day. in addition to the view, what are the current temperatures? a lot of us are in the low to mid-70s. pick out your part of the bay. take those numbers and by thursday pretty much nobody is getting out of the 50s for daytime highs like a big drop and thursday morning, friday morning, morning lows are down into the upper 30s for many inland valleys. it's 70 degrees in livermore now. thursday morning you might be looking at temperatures in the upper 30s. one quick view, the big picture shows you a big pool of cold air coming our way. that's obviously the headline we're talking about now. if we step it back and visualize the other aspect of this, this does mean rain. the rain is going to get here on thursday. we'll have widespread showers t

as we check in with darren and darren, how's the weather looking? >> got a little bit of light rainout there morning. has not been equal by the way for everybody. it's kind of the typical pattern where you have really got to be near the coast to have gotten much of this rain. and that's where you are going to see we've got some rainfalltotals that have shown up out here. you can really see the pattern. about 0.04 of rain so far in san francisco and about 0.03 of rain down here in redwood city but not much elsewhere. let's come over this way. see them bet e for redwood city and san francisco and but if you go inland, you really haven't gotten much that you can measure from this stuff. let's look at it another way. and we'll visualize this now using the actual forecast imagery and i can put first alert doppler behind me. it's the coast you are going to see and the hills of the peninsula which have gotten the lighter rain out of this and the east bay hills too but notice that's it. you don't really get much more rain. let me show you how that could cha

for more about the specifics and the science of the quake itself, let's bring in meteorologist darren peck. >> a couple ways to visualize this, sara, which i think might better wrap our minds around what happened. you see where the epicenter is in taiwan? you're looking at a shaking intensity map. and the areas over near the key show you when you get into those reds it was very strong shaking, which makes sense. this was a 7.4. that is a very powerful earthquake. loma prieta was 6.9. in that sense, this one was stronger. but that one was only half as deep as this one was, and you have to balance those two. by the way, the video of those newsrooms is from taipei. taipei is 80 miles away from where the epicenter was, ands the shaded in green, which is still fairly significant shaking, but it wasn't the worst of it. here's more relatively good news for taiwan. all of the black dots show you where the population centers are. so in one sense, the populated side of the island is the other side. but there is a city that was right next to the epicenter of this. and when you look at this map w

gorgeous day around here, darren. >> yeah. this was a really wonderful one to spend a little bit of time outside. if you like it sunny and warm, it's going to get warmer the next few days. we'll see the atmosphere go through like this whole scale shift. watch what happens in the general temperature trend. as each day goes on, you see the warmth breathe in, breathe out. by wednesday it's going to breathe in pretty darn close to us. we'll see this kind of surge of warmer temperatures. we'll top out wednesday. we looked at that in the last visit. many inland locations will be in the low 80s when we do that and then it's going to turn right back around and friday we're going back to the 60s and it's going to be widespread rain on saturday. we can see the bigger situation from the gulf of alaska in terms of the next storm that will develop. we'll let this play through the next three days. this is our warm-up because you see the storm track getting pulled away and there's nothing going on here. we'll keep it just as sunny as everyth

let's get to our first alert meteorologist darren peck who is tracking it all. darren? >> looking at the same dramatic view from our windows on the virtual set. clouds showed up, 10 degrees cooler than yesterday, and there is like a 30 mile-an-hour wind gust coming in along the coast right now. not only are the temperatures lower we have a lot of places upper 50s, lower 60s. there is a windchill on it. look at the doppler. leading edge of the system. there is a large amount of lightning in the northern third of the state. to see our branch of the storm we have to fill it in with high-resolution data. watch what happens right there. that is tomorrow morning's commute. widespread rain comes in. so, tomorrow is the first alert weather day for two reasons. that is going to be a wet commute and then once it leaves in the late morning watch what fills in after that. isolated scattered showers with occasional thunderstorms mixed in. when we get back together in the complete forecast i will show you why that phase of this will last all of the way through friday and friday morni

let's get to darren peck to figure it all out. >> reporter: a view there on the monitor of it, first, we will take a look at what we did today. it was 80s, today, lower 60s. many places 20 degrees cooler. so you are already noticing the change. we will go down another 7-9 degrees tomorrow for some places. most of us in the upper 50s for day time highs that is it. let's look at the rain on this. you can see the good band of green sitting up there. as we come in for a close-up look there are showers getting close to us now. it will take awhile. watch, it does not happen until late tonight before the leading edge of that gets into sonoma county. that will be 10:00, 11:00, it would not be all of the heavy rain. what we are waiting for is midnight until 7:00 a.m. that is when the steady rain, the wall, moving over much of the bay. it will not be downpours but it will be widespread, steady, it will give us half an inch of rain for some of the wetter spots before sunrise even happens tomorrow. that is the bulk of the rain actually from the whole system like between midnight and 7:00 a.m. the

good morning to our friend darren peck joining us once again this morning and darren, nice tie, nice great hashtag actually. we're going to take a look at first alert doppler this morning because there's some rain on it. and this is part of the change that's going to be with us for the next two days. so you can see the rain that's just barely working its way up to humboldt county right now. we can track that and over the next 24 hours some of the showers are going to try to get here. they don't really have much success in doing that. but it is going to get a bit breezy tomorrow as that weak system falls apart. we probably don't even really notice the rain but we do notice the wind by tomorrow afternoon. we'll probably pick up about a 30, 40-mile an hour gust along the coast. that's about it. other than that one little niche moment in the forecast, there's really not a whole lot of change here. look the same today to what yesterday did. you are going to see more clouds and the marine layer around just about as much as we did but a few more breaks of blue sky than you had yesterday. no

so let's get right to meteorologist darren peck. and i know i'm not the only one loving this warmup, darren? >> this is probably top of mind for anybody who has been outside today. it's been spectacular just to show you where we are today. pick out your part of the bay and a lot of these numbers are on the verge of 80 or at it and it was 81 degrees down in the south bay. just a quick review. watch how dramatic this will be as this is today and we will lose those numbers and i'll bring in saturday's daytime highs. yeah. so that is a lot of 50s on here or the upper 50s and the few low 60s. but it will be cooler by the time we get there. so make the most of tomorrow. tomorrow, it's going to be just like today. maybe a degree or two warmer. the way the colder air is about to get transported our way, you'll see that big massive blue air that's showing up on saturday. what's coming up along that and look at that as a whole, there is rain. so it will be widespread rain for saturday and mainly saturday morning. so when we get back together

take it away, darren. >> we'll see her back on the old school set.ig changes are coming our way in the forecast because the temperatures are about to warm up in a visually obvious way when we watch this. this is the midlevels of the atmosphere the next four days. it's kind of like every afternoon it seems like the earth is breathing and the temperatures warm up and i just wanted to pause it on wednesday because this is the dramatic point at which you can see. we'll find ourself under a pretty nice bubble of warm air, which is shielding us, pushing all the inclement weather around us. we're going to low to mid-80s when we get here, wednesday and thursday. then as quickly as that warm-up comes, here's another way of visualizing it, the temperatures jumping up to above average from below average where we were over the weekend. average would be upper 60s in general right now if you broad brush the bay. we'll be in the low 80s. just a little bit of review for where we'll be tomorrow because you no doubt noticed today if you were outside at all, it was a g

first alert meteorologist darren peck in our virtual view studio, darren, what was your view of the eclipse? >> i was kind of out doing my normal routine and i didn't have any special glasses. so i didn't look up and i just took a look around and looked for some of the shadows through trees and noticed that maybe it was mildly less bright than it had been, but wasn't all that intense from my perspective. i'm glad we had so many people who were able to enjoy it today. we certainly had great weather for it, no clouds in our way. if you look at the number now, that's the vantage point, 73 degrees out there in diablo valley. in oakland you'll notice it's about 10 degrees cooler on this side. we're only in the mid-60s here. everybody is going up about 10 degrees from where you are right now by the time we top out wednesday. you pick out your part of the bay on here for today, a lot of low 70s, low to mid-70s for many inland valleys. i'm going to switch this from monday's daytime high to thursday and now you can really see the difference, a lot of deep oranges and daytime highs in the low to mid-

darren, thanks for so much for being with us. so, let's talk for a moment about how this how these attacks would have been intercepted. reports this morning from trey yingst worried that the majority were shot down from aircraft instead of iron dome or arrow defense systems, which played a role as well. the majority were taken out by us, israeli or jordanian allied air force. what would that have? what would that operation, that mission have been like? yeah. good morning. thanks for having me on, well, the first thing that sticks out when you talk about aircraft intercepting all these systems is the fact that they had enough warning through intelligence channels and others that these the drones and missiles were actually coming, because that means they were either ready to launch or already in the air, ready to intercept shortly after iran launched them. now this would be typical, interception techniques as far as radars on the ground and in the air, identifying these targets and then moving those aircraft to the location to be a

meteorologist darren peck is in our virtual view studio. >>> daytime highs going up to around 80. another beautiful day. pick out your part of the bay. san jose is going to 82. look at the difference. if we switch this and show you where we are going to be for daytime highs tomorrow, it's like ten degrees cooler. it's not a drastic cold snap but it will be noticeably different. instead of showing the difference, we'll put on the daytime highs. now we are in the low 70s for just about everybody inland. quite a noticeable change. there is a pattern shift we are going to notice early in the morning. a little bit of the marine layer will have filled in. we will start the day and it will be relatively gray to begin. if you watch the pattern in the long range, this is what we will spend our time looking at in the complete forecast coming up in a few minutes. small chance of light rain by the end of the week. >>> marine mammal center is working to figure out what killed a 40-foot gray whale that washed ashore at an alameda beach. it was found on saturday. chopper spotted crews towing the

sending it over to our first alert meteorologist darren peck, darren? >> reporter: first i have to show you the front row seat we had today when the complex of thunderstorms started over napa. this is the camera on top of mount diablo. looking out towards vallejo, watch the showers, see the heavier bands of rain with the thunderstorm. it then hits the lens of our camera that sits on top. it 3,000 feet. that is light no. then the light snow melts off and you see the next storm marching their way on 680. look where they are now. following the same line. this is a real focus as we have gone into the afternoon, churching our perspective a little bit you can watch the progression, thunderstorms develop, working their way down 680. another one starting. take a look at a closer view here. same place where it all started four hours ago in napa, there is another sell there, that is just east of downtown for you. that is about to cross the area. when we get back torgt in the complete forecast we will track this. it does not last much longer but we are still in fi

our meteorologist darren peck has more on the big changes coming including rain. >> saturday, the rain gets here on saturday and widespread for the morning. just a little comparison on how dramatic the change will be. the day out those windows was spectacular. when you look at the day time highs for how we did there are a lot of numbers here that got into the 80s. san francisco did not get to 70. in some way it was a summer day. temperatures in the 60s in the city and temperatures in the lower 80s for concord and you can see livermore's number where the number was 83 degrees. all right, let's do the quick comparison, watch what happened for saturday and how much colder the numbers are going to be. most of them, upper 50s. the system that will do this cool down is coming with rain. for that, we will go quickly with the forecast imagery to give you the initial look at how the system is coming together and what it looks like in the pacific now. already, a lot better formed than it was yesterday. you see the spin in the clouds out there. the forecast imagery fills in rain. we can play that

first alert meteorologist darren peck is here with a little more of rain on the way. time it out for us if you will. >> saturday morning, but there is a lot in the details on that. the first thing is as wonderful as the temperatures are with a lot of low 80s. i'll go back to the notion. saturday's daytime highs with a common number here. we will be noticeable cooler by the weekend. if we would come in for a closer look at that forecast imagery now, a handle of the system that's driving all this. looking at the map for the last several days that will show it's a great way to visualize how different kinds of air masses are going to be transported. watch what happens as you can see the big warmth each afternoon. all the while doing the afternoon warmups. there's the big pool of cold air coming our way, settling in for the weekend. and that is one way of visualizing the storm. just looking at the air temperatures in it for the mid levels, where we will be colder air. let's look at the storm itself. it's coming from the gulf of alaska. now watch it spin itself and pull in
