darren peck is standing by on the embarcadero. so what are conditions like out there right now?>> reporter: not too bad, in fact, this rain kind of brings to mind that old tale, whether it's true or not, that the eskimos have 50 different words for snow. i feel like over the last few days you can do the same thing for rain. i know you will focus on the potential for heavier rain here overnight, but i want to show you what we were up against. if you look at the satellite view of california today, then you know doubt have heard the words last week. that's what we looked like from space today, and you can see for yourself. see that conveyor belt where the clouds are pile driving right into the california coastline. that is where the more steady rain is and that's where you will see nonstop, continuous rain, for two days if it stalls over you. and our luck is the fact that that happened over big sur and over san luis obispo. that's where it was expected to happen. we are not done with this, so we will track what comes next in more detail coming up a little later in the forecast. >>

it'set ig ov meteorologist darren peck with a closer look at our winds and waves. >> the flight so we can see on the top of e embarcadero center show us only one view of the windmegive you more of a widespread outlook on how this is playing out. please be -- when you get closer to the delta, notice how you see the darker and brighter colors showing up here as opposed to the south and east bank. that changes the the next 24 hours because the wind should pick up equally they areawide and it should -- the important number from now through tomorrow afternoon will be the guests. the gusts are where you can get some of the damage whether it is a broken tree branch or flying debris. livermore starts to show up, 22 miles per hour gusts already. the wind advisory which started last night stays in effect until we get through 6:00 tomorrow. it covers the entire bay area. i will show you specific areas in the complete forecast in a few minutes. of course, we still have a high surf advisory until 3:00 this afternoon. we are likely breaking more temperatures today for daytime highs, all of that in

meteorologist darren peck is in for mary lee. hi darren. >> good afternoon michelle. if you look over my shoulder you can see the leading edge of the rainmaker. an impressive line of clouds off the coast. we can see the rain showing up right there. that's going to take a little while before it gets here. for most of the rest of today while it is daylight hours it's just clouds like we are seeing now. if we put this in futurecast and play it forward, by the time we have gotten to 6:00 this evening there is a good band of rain and it comes right through sonoma county. by 8:00 or 9:00, down to the golden gate. my midnight, you see that well organized line. it works down into the south bay by the time we've gotten to 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. there is not a lot left by the time it gets there. by sunrise it is done. we'll have plenty left over clouds for saturday. but we are not getting a lot of rain out of this one, maybe .05 in the north bay. monday's rain looks better. i will show you that coming up in the complete forecast in just a few minutes. back to you. >>> i am anne mako

darren peck starts our morning off with the forecast. >>> it is a beautiful morning out there and very warm for some of us things to the winds that have started to kick up. those are more of a noticeable issue for this afternoon into tomorrow. for right now, the majority of us are not seeing too bad of winds. we will be a backup to the low to mid 70s. there is still dangerous serve at the coast. it stays in effect all the way through most of tuesday. we are not seeing many issues with fog. with the wind having picked up overnight, not only does it clear out the fog that there is something really weird looking on this map. the current temperature is in the mid-60s for inland locations that have already started to feel some of the downslope winds. santro right now. if you think that is a mistake, ncord, livermore. fairfield, all four are in the 60s right now. you don't have to grab your heavy jacket but that is also a sign that there are some strong downslope winds out there. as we get into later today, you will start to feel it. still in the low to mid 70s. we will call it warm and wind

meteorologist darren peck is in for mary. >>> happy new year. we've got more rain coming but not until later tonight. most of new year's day is fine, starting out really pretty actually. looking towards the skyline. another advantage point looks at the glimmering lights of the east bay hills. it is cold in the north bay. we are back down in the mid 30s. 35 santa rosa, 36 napa. it's low to mid 40s for most other spots in and around the immediate bay. the rest of today will be just fine with daytime highs around 60 with a good amount of sunshine. here comes the first chance of rain from this system right here. on the wide view we can see that doesn't arrive until 7:00. let's come in for a closer look. there is our leading edge of rain. by the time we've gotten to 8:00 it's moving across north bay. it's nice that it's got good organization. that tells us that will be noticeable rain for north bay this evening. by about 11:00 it's made it down to the city, golden gate, east bay, the peninsula, finally south bay by 3:00 in the morning. there is not m

meteorologist darren peck is tracking the rain and the wet week ahead. >> there's a lot coming our way. so what i want to do now in this visit is just simplify things and give you the headlines that matter the most. first order up is tomorrow. the first storm gets here. but it's a weak one. we will get some light, moderate rainfall. we could get an isolated thunderstorm tomorrow. but, it is like a quarter of an inch of rain from the late morning through the afternoon. sunday is not that big of a deal. on monday, we will feel the winds on the backside of that system. and, there is a wind advisory for the city. much of the coast. gusts to 40 miles an hour. that may be a factor. monday will not be the nicest day to get outside. then we get to the main event. and that's coming for tuesday night through thursday. this is the one you are hearing so much about. this one has the potential to bring two to four inches of rain not just to the mountains but to the cities in and around the bay area. rainfall totals look impressive. here is concern number one. that's the burn scar in the santa cruz

sunday, january 3 i am devin fehely, let's start with a check of our weather with meteorologist darren peck.>> a foggy morning start, typical after the rain comes through with a lot of humidity in the air, kind of pretty looking out over the downtown but it gets foggy down on the ground in some spots like the tri-valley. but look at the visibility map, you see concord is reporting fog, livermore obviously in san francisco. when we go to the map look at all the areas where the visibility is below 1 mile, livermore, concorde, fairfield, san francisco and santa rosa, all of these places this morning when issues with bob on the roadway and it stays this way the next few hours and then will burn off when the sun comes up. and while we are done with the rain from yesterday we do have plenty of clouds and we will get breaks a blue sky and by the time we get into the afternoon around 4 pm there is an opening because it doesn't last long though, overnight there comes the advance of monday morning's rain. when we checked back with the complete forecast we will timeout the rain for monday morning's co

first, we want to check with darren peck for your forecast. it's friday.like. >> fantastic. daytime highs staying around 70 for many inland spots today and over the weekend, michelle. as far as friday morning, we are starting to get early morning light. you can see it from our camera that overlook tri valley. it's clear. we don't have much fog. i am checking some of the cameras i've got access to. i will share it with you coming up. over concord, a little bit of a stratus cloud, a little bit fog trying to spill in from the delta. there is some fog. primarily it is a north bay issue but we will look at some of the east bay spots in a bit. dangerous surf at the coast, there is another surf advisory. that starts in a couple hours. it covers most of this weekend. i will see you with that as well in a few minutes. gianna, over to you. >>> let's take a look at the roadways. one of our busiest spots is into the altamont pass. we are seeing brake lights west bound off of 205 getting to 580. usual stuff for a friday commute. as darren mentioned, foggy freeways. tha

he has mild to moderate injuries been time for check of the weather right now with meteorologist darren peck.>> might rain showers across the bay area, part of the same system started last night a little after sunset in the north bay which has taken its time to get down into san jose. we will look more closely at the rain in a second but while you were sleeping this is how we did. one 10th of an inch of rain around the north bay overnight and it has been 100th of an inch of rain for most locations, relatively warm as the clouds acted like a blanket and most around 50. now let's look at the south bay where the rain is been pretty much exclusively here from the san mateo bridge southward over the dumbarton bridge now if we just watch the last 45 minutes, slowly moving off to the southeast. it is right out along here were 680 and 880 was the light rain but also not seeing much measurable in san jose. the next few hours we call it light showers from now through noon and then better rain arrives monday and another system after that, all of that coming up in the seven day forecast in just a few mi

let's get over to darren peck for a look at how this year is starting off. >>> the first day of 2021, no issues weather wise. it's more sunshine, daytime highs around 60. there is rain tonight. technically it is going to rain today but it's not going to happen until after sun set. that's why i am calling new year's day dry and cool. however by tonight we get light rain overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. a bit of rain is coming for next week monday and wednesday. at this point, two decent looking rainmakers bay area wide heading our way. this is a view from the top of the sales force looking at the lights of the east bay hills. love that zoomed in shot. as far as temperatures, north bay, mid 30s, tri valley, mid 30s. napa mid 30s. everybody else is around 40. daytime highs today are around 60, plenty sunshine. we'll look at opportunities for rain in the complete forecast coming up in a few minutes. back over to you. >>> new video. despite warnings, illegal fireworks rang in the new year across the bay area. in san francisco the bangs started just before midnight. you see in o

darren peck starts us off with a check of the forecast. >> much more noticeable by the late morning. it will stay that way into tuesday. it won't be equally windy everywhere but if you are in the east bay, north bay, you will notice the winds today. let me show you what the headlines are. we are staying warm. we broke records all over the bay area yesterday. we will be about 5 degrees cooler today than we were yesterday. it is still dangerous surf at the coast until 3:00. we have a high surf advisory so be mindful. the wind advisory is for today and tuesday and it has already been windy. the wind advisory started last night at 10:00. there are interesting things happening out there right now because of that. it is very warm on the thermometer in some spots. santa rosa at 66. livermore, 61. those numbers are about 30 degrees warmer than they could otherwise be for this time of day at this time in the morning. look at the wind gusts. these are primarily in the mountains but they have been enough that we have gotten some downslope winds if you are in communities near the basis of those

darren peck is out in the elements. rain falling in morgan hill, darren, i can hear it through the microphone. give us an update on conditions there. >> reporter: the best way to describe this, paul? it is not necessarily all that heavy, but what it is, is, it is consistent. it just rains. sometimes it picks up a little in intensity, sometimes it lightens up in intensity. here is probably the best example. we came here to morgan hill, because so far, since this started, morgan hill has gotten 3 1/4 inches of rain. if you drive 20 minutes north, with no traffic since 20 minutes north, you get to san jose, we have only gotten a ton seven inch. a huge difference. and that says so much about the nature of this atmospheric river. look at the clouds on the satellite. you can see how this is set up. there is a steady plume. look at the clouds, in a very narrow ribbon. that is the atmospheric river. that is your conveyor belt of steady rain. right now, it is stationary. that means it rains like this if you are under it. so, here

let's start with a check of our weather with meterologist darren peck. >> light rain out there this morning but pretty much confined to the north bay, it looks good if you look at high death doppler but let's come in for a tighter view. you can see the showers that are working their way on shore. we've already picked up about 307 inch rain in sonoma county over the last three hours. it's not heavy stuff but it is light rain and we can watch it on the futurecast from 6:00 it sticks around to the early hour morning and then by 9:00, 10:00, the most depressive of this will be done but there's a chance you get a shower in sonoma county. so that's our top headline. north bay, shower today but rain bay area wide, tomorrow, much more impressive, in fact. we could pick up half an inch or more from the rain coming our way tomorrow. i will show you that in the complete forecast. it'll also be witty tomorrow, particularly in the afternoon as the system comes on shore. we are not dealing with any fog out there, just a light rain in the north bay, a few clouds, temperatures are relatively warm. we will

meteorologist darren peck is tracking yet another storm taking game of the bay area. >> that one gets here on monday but we are not entirely done with this one yet. look at the clouds from treasure island looking back to the city skyline. you see the very building there? what color the ceiling is. this is the kind of just heavy dampness that will missed out and you get light rain out of this. the kind of stuff that can add up if it goes on for hours at a time. it is also the kind of stuff that is not even really show up on the radar because it is so low to the ground, such a fine mist. here's a perfect example. we have it zoomed in on the tri- valley here. taking a look out toward, we are over dublin here but livermore, you are close rain gauge. 500 of an inch. a lot of that has happened in the last few hours, so it will stay like this through sunset where we just kind of missed and high def doppler is not going to catch at all. but it will come to an end by sunset, so monday then becomes the next interesting item. look at the clouds developing out here. that is the next system. in th

. >>> as for why and what's next, here's darren peck. >> for the why, all you have to do is look at the pacific. there's a huge storm out there right now. when the guy at the beach said there's a lot of energy out there, this is it. it's been going like this for the last several weeks. what's happened as far as we're concerned is it would be nice to get rain out of this but the atmosphere doesn't want that to happen. as the storm track drives those showers our way, there's a big arcing ridge over us in the atmosphere so we're not getting the rain. what we are feeling is all the energy from the pacific, those storms are picking up. those higher wave heights keep rushing up to the california coast. that's why we keep feeling the energy in the ocean without getting the pay-off. that's why we're not getting the rain from these things. so we've got to stay on guard as far as the surf is concerned until 9:00 tonight. but then tomorrow something very different comes into play. the high surf warning expires and you can see that up and down the coast here in red with those wave heights to 30 fee

now let's get to darren peck whose life in the berkeley hills. he is monitoring the strong winds for us. darren? >> a list. grizzly peak is a really popular spot to come look at the view. you cannot see it now of course. just to tell you 4 a.m. it was in soquel you can see downtown oakland by me. about 1800 feet of elevation. this is where we are going to feel the wind a little bit stronger appear at this elevation. it's why we are also concerned down on the burn scars and santa cruz mountains. the mountains are going to feel this lot more. i found access to a weather station, which is not far from here on grizzly peak. we are already hitting guest of 30 miles an hour where i am. i just happened to come to me during one of the calmest and most relaxed points of the afternoon that i have been here. let me show you why this is going to get a lot stronger. let's go to the forecast. the way this forecast comes together, it's almost textbook. if you watch the folders on your screen, you see a very clear and well-defined line. it shows up on the top lef

. >> darren peck is live outside, grizzly peak in berkeley, the wind has been blowing but they will be howling later, darren? >> yes, allen, they will get stronger than this. i have a handheld anemometer appear on grizzly peak of 1800 feet, i have already gotten it 30 mile-per-hour wind gust up here. but, we have not yet gotten to what we have been calling the main event here, which is the cold front that paul was referencing in the forecast. let me show you a visualization to help us better understand why, even if it is windy at your house now, it gets windy for about a 2 to 3 hour window, tonight. we can watch it on future gas, take a look to the upper left- hand corner of your screen and you will see a well-defined line. that is the cold front. two things happen on that line. first, you get your strongest wind gusts. what's that passover the east bay hills in the heart of the bay and watch the numbers take up on the wind speed as it does that. when it gets down to the santa cruz mountains, you will see a 78 mile gust down there. that is the burn scar paul was just talking about, at

. >>> meteorologist darren peck joins us now. we had the strong winds this week. that only compounds that risk in january. >> yes. well, if there's any good news, the fire weather watch that has been posted, it's not for any of the mountains in the bay area proper, not even the santa cruz mountains. that fire weather watch picks up around big sur well to our south and it is a concern down there. they've gotten much less rain once you get south of the bay area. here at home we've gotten just enough that it's kind of borderline. the national weather service held off on an actual weather watch. that's kind of good news, but the winds are going to be an issue. before i get to the wind we've got to talk about our temperatures. look at that gorgeous shot. i just love that perspective over the bay. here is the same network of cameras atop of the salesforce looking at oakland. let's get over to the tri- valley, just as pretty, dublin in the foreground. we broke a lot of records today, but we broke one of the toughest records to do, which is san francisco. we got to 74 tod

darren peck is with us. we have not a warm-up but a dry out for a while. >> and then we repeat on wednesday. but with about half of the intensity, like half the amount of rain, half the amount of wind but wednesday time and will be similar and we will get rain. again, but let's, i don't want to get too far ahead, this is live, high def doppler so all of the gorgeous pictures we just showed you, you can see the snow here which is still falling, still impressive bands of rain. but nothing here at home in the bay area. we are done, in terms of any rain falling out of these clouds but it is still going to look like we have got a storm over the bay area. look at the clouds hanging out from our view looking over the bay bridge, starting to clear things out a bit over here, for san jose but once you get over to the tri-valley not only are the streets still wet, in the hills above dublin but you still have a very brooding looking guy out there and the clouds will stick around overnight which will help with the tempe

some of the heaviest rain right now is following in morgan hill, that is where meteorologist darren peck joins us with current conditions, and the big picture perspective as well. darren? >> reporter: paul, i was checking the rain gauge in morgan hill and since this started, morgan hill has gotten over three inches of rain. now, here is the comparison that tells this whole story. if you drive north on 101, 25 minutes, no traffic, you get into san jose. have not even gotten an inch there, yet. so, where i come in morgan hill, is just on the edge of what for the next day and a half is going to be a fairly stationary, rainy atmospheric river. >> let me show you what that looks like. you can clearly see what the atmospheric river looks like on a day like today from the satellite. look at that steady stream of solid cloud, in a very narrow band, coming right into the coast of california, from monterey county, and really southward, but also rise up through here. right through this part of santa clara county. look at the rainfall totals. if you watch the accumulated rain, it paints a beautiful

let's start with a check of our weather with meteorologist darren peck. it's going to be a soggy week. >> it will be. by the middle of the week the storms start looking more impressive. first, no rain today. saturday is rain free. tomorrow it will rain. there is another weak system coming our way for sunday. that's the top item in the headlines. stronger storms for mid week, more on that in the complete forecast. saturday morning if you are getting ready to step out the door, there is patchy fog that we need to discuss. east bay, east alameda through livermore, tri valley, see that 0.5, tells you you can see a half mile down the road. that slows you down. santa rosa, you were down to .3 of a mile. napa is down to .3. the fog tends to slosh around on mornings like this. give yourself extra time. a lot of clear sky here but there are left over clouds mixed in. you will get more blue sky than anything else into the afternoon. that's the view now looking at oakland. that's 880 where the temperature in oakland is 48. daytime highs, we'll keep it in the mid to

meteorologist darren peck is tracking a lot more rain . >> there is a lot to unpack in the forecast over the next seven days. in this first visit, i want to simplify things and give you the headlines on how this will play out. we will go into details later. tomorrow, it will rain. this is not a big deal for tomorrow. light to moderate rain, a lot like what we had yesterday. there could be isolated thunderstorms but it is not like a heavy downpour situation. we get about a quarter of an inch of rain on sunday. when the first storm passes monday, the second item overhead lines comes into play. monday will be windy. when the advisory is up. we could see gusts from 40 miles per hour. monday is no rain but it will be windy and cold. this will be what ushers in the cold air which sets the stage for the main event, which then comes in on tuesday. specifically tuesday night through thursday-this will be the most impressive storm we have seen so far this season, which the season has not been all that impressive. this would be a good storm in any winter. it will be heavy rain, that will be fueled

. >>> time now get an update from darren peck. more rain on the way? >> more rain on the way. really for most of us, not until monday. but the high-def doppler is already reading showers off the far northwest coast. that rain is part of a much larger system that will try really hard to bring some light rain to sonoma county over about the next 24 hours. so let's take a look at the wider view here and i'll show you why i would say it will have to try real hard to do that. look at the storms sitting out there. you no, watch what happens. we'll come in for a close-up, play this all the way through today. not much has happened. we'll go all the way through sunday and that storm is just like in a holding pattern. just sits out there until monument then on monday afternoon, the shower will come back in across the entire bay area. but before monday, there is still the opportunity for us to see some rain here in the north bay particularly sonoma county. so this is tomorrow morning. we'll see a few light showers and then into the late morning. and then it gets pushed back out to sea. i
