good morning happy mother's day i am devin fehely, let's check our weather with meteorologist darren peck who is tracking today's dangerous conditions.>> it is good news on the wind relatively speaking. they are less intense compared to yesterday but still pretty windy in the mountains. six mile-per-hour guests at not st. helena, that was 76 yesterday. these are the gusts that are been happening overnight which is typically when we see the strongest wind. so they are lighter but the red flag warning is still in place because it is windy enough and humidity is critically low the northbay mountains and east bay mounds and east bay valleys are still on guard for this through 6:00 a.m. monday. that is a quick look ahead. it will be another warm and windy day for most of us. back to you. >>> we're keeping our eye on the dangerous fire conditions, da lin reports now from the oakland hills with fire crews and homeowners are preparing for the worst. >> reporter: a lot of homeowners are playing catch-up because traditionally in may they are managing vegetation. but of course, we are seeing late-su

. >> and darren peck is here to talk about whether or not we're going to set some records tomorrow. >> we probably will. that's that camera in front of dublin again, livermore is 90 right now. 94 in concord and nose numbers are about 20 degrees warmer than they were yesterday at this time. but tomorrow we're going to go up another ten. that's why the heat advisory is in effect for tomorrow and it starts at noon tomorrow and goes until 9:00 and look at the areas that are included on there. the valleys of north bay, and the valleys of the inland parts of contra costa and alameda county and solano county gets the excessive heat warning because it's going to be hotter over here as it always is as you get into the central valley. both of those though should be taken seriously in terms of limiting exposure to this. we haven't had heat like this since last september and october and also came on really fast so not a whole lot of time to acclimate to this. just find the shade and drink plenty of water and this is tomorrow. for inland. i have got three examples up here. concord, livermore and s

. >>> time for a check of weather with meteorologist darren peck. some changes on the way. >> for the holiday, just as we get to sunday and monday the heat will turn on. before that, let me show you what thursday looks like. we will start with our view of the marin head lands, golden gate bridge, no clouds. we go from the marin head lands to the other side of the bay area to the tri valley where it is the same story. this is where we had the clouds, persistent batch of stratus hanging out over much of dublin and towards livermore until about 8:00 and now it's all sunshine. 74 livermore, 82 santa rosa, fremont 68 but san jose will make it to the mid 70s. these numbers keep repeating for the next three days including today. thursday, friday, saturday, no change. the first part of the holiday weekend you don't notice the warm up yet. let's look at the whole three day weekend and we'll use inland locations as our example. saturday 79. that's where you are today. by sunday it's 89. by monday numbers have gone up to 99. 20 degrees from saturday to monday.

parts of the area can actually see thunderstorms, darren peck is here with answers to all of this. >> ukiah just got grazed by a few lightning and thunder strikes that moved to the left. that will probably be the main thing we experience. let me show you what it looks like over the last hour specifically. right over 101. a good little brief downpour at times, maybe even some small hail. this will fall apart as it works its way down to sonoma county. so we've got to pull our attention up here. the storms over the northern sierra will get luke back around and try to come in for another pass at mendocino county later tonight. this will get us ahead to just past midnight. you can see some of the showers may be even holding together to get down into sonoma county. we will take a look at the rest of the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >>> new details on a fire that destroyed a concord church building. investigators say the blaze might have been started by a homeless person looking for shelter in a crawlspace. john ramose spoke with church members today about the loss and their path mov

meteorologist darren peck is in for paul tonight. >> for now, we should say. for now because of the situation that we've got. if you just look at this dean from treasure island right now, there is a lot of dampness. that cloud is just really thickening up and almost to getting down to the point where we will start calling it fog. if we look at the view over toward the bay bridge, it is pretty much on the deck of the roadway there now, so you likely will encounter some fog as you are taking the drive across the bay bridge, and looked down 880, look how much higher this is, right? so it had been clear here but this is now about to overtake the east bay. you are going to get great over overnight, we will wake up tomorrow with the same mid- level grandma ray clouds hovering over the tri-valley. a big impact in temperatures today, if you were inland, look at the current numbers, it is like mid-50s for most spots in the bay and low 70s now but we ranged mostly in the low 80s today for inland spots. only 70 in santa rosa. but you can see how things were experienced s

darren peck with the innovative new effort to harness the power of the redwoods. >> the beauty of this place, it is just such cewildss. >>orter:you would expect sam to talk about saving redwoods, but on our walk sam was actually talking about how redwoods could help save us. >> they are machines at sequestering carbon. that means they pull carbon out of the atmosphere, and as you know, redwoods never stop growing. they can grow to be over 2000 years old. >> that is why old redwoods like these store more carbon per acre than any other forest in the world. we've got 1,000,000 1/2 acres of redwoods in california. the challenge is that very little of it actually looks like this anymore. only 5% of the original 2000- year-old giants are left. here at home in the east bay, it was all at this point but this is second-generation of redwoods. and it turns out that's where the real opportunity lies. researchers looked at five trees right here at this regional park and found that those trees were on carbon at a faster rate than even the giants on the north coast where they are only a century old

. >> reporter: meteorologist darren peck is here with what is in store for your weekend. >> temperatures will stay pretty much where they were today but it is what is happening over the last two days that will set the stage for what that will feel like because we have cooled down is 20 degrees for some parts of the bay area just over the last two days, not here. that is the view in the city. no surprise there to see may gray in full effect but look at the last 30 minutes and the tri- valley. that is the scene over dublin so these clouds after giving you some sunshine, more sunshine than not today in the tri-valley but about an hour and a half ago the clouds coming back to go but that strong onshore flow if it is enough to bring in the clouds, look at the cool down. livermore was 12 degrees cooler, that was the most extreme. meanwhile san jose was only three degrees drop. that 68, it was about 20 degrees warmer than that, two days ago. so we've done the cooldown, what comes next? this small chance of rain for tomorrow morning, and i should preface it by saying it is a small chance of spri

so they are rebounding but darren peck, you know what is not rebounding? our temperatures. >>> really, it is like the perfect example of, like, two different worlds right now, in the bay area which is classic from a here in the city and in immediate bay. temperatures are down, they have been down and it has been the rule for at least the last couple of days. he would stay that way. but if you were inland today there was a lot of sunshine we still got the cooldown. some places where 10 degrees cooler today, inland, then we were yesterday. let's take a look at hothis omerreasure island looking back toward the city. here is what i mean by two different worlds. that is the tri-valley taking a look at the camera up above dublin, and even though you have plenty of sunshine, you are still noticeably toda e isour marine layer. you can see the coastline has got it in the comes in right of the golden gate but you've got to be right there in the immediate opening of the gates to really notice that. everybody else with that and if you look at the current numbers we ar

. >>> darren peck standing by with a look at the weather. the weather kind of depended on where you were today. for me i was in the city, it was freezing. >> meanwhile if you were inland in concord, it was cooler than yesterday over here, but it was not freezing. the temperatures had to come down to more like 70s, upper 70s. let's take a look at that view from concord, real pretties dean this morning from one part of the bay area to another, temperature actually. you can still see the gray wet blanket hovering there. that is a sandwich you have a pretty strong onshore flow today. kept the temperatures pretty similar in the immediate bay but those clouds, even though they cannot get inland, that cooler air did, and it was noticeably cooler today, so if we topped out at 82 in concord, 77 now. santa rosa and 65, daytime high. watch what happens as we take the relay from where it is now, play this into the evening, this gets everybody. with the exception of probably down here through the santa clara valley. he may be looking at clear skiedown in

. >>> darren peck start to tell us what is in the forecast ahead and there he is. >> a bit of a warm-up, mainly for inland spots, like instead of being upper 70s will go low to mid 80s and that is the headline over the next seven days. not a whole lot going on here that will be out of the ordinary for late may. that is very typical for late may. that is the marine layer pushing a deck of clouds just over the ridgetop and obscuring on and off throughout the day. sutro tower just a real beautiful view there and just classic for san francisco and in late may, if we take a look at what that looks like on the high-resolution satellite you can see where the clouds are that are hugging the west side of the peninsula. they had been in the east bay this morning but everything melted back. very nicely, to the coast. by the time he got into the late morning probably a pattern we will continue again tomorrow and in the sierra still patches of snow left over from winter melting fast. but any of that light snow that we have been watching the last few days, that is all gone. this is all stuff at alrea

. >>> and darren peck is here with an unusually early may red flag warning. >> some areas in san jose not even included. let's get specific on who is included in this and where the trouble spots are. a lot of red showing up there. primarily for the sacramento valley. but a closeup look at the north bay show you it's the north bay mountains included in this and the east bay hills in addition to the valleys in contra costa and alameda county. we saw a brush fire that started in the valleys of contra costa county not far from crock et earlier today. an, in addition to the fire that e with just saw down at san jose. it is one way to look at it on a red flag map. if you have a red flag warning that tells you there is a high degree of concern. but if we look at it another way. the greatest concern with this particular offshore wind event is actually centered in the central valley. not to say we are off the hook here, we are not. but it is good to gain a little perspective on where the strongest and driest conditions are in terms of the wind. but back here at home, reporter da lin made his w

darren peck is here with your memorial day forecast. >> before i show you that map that has the heat why we have a heat advisory. if you look at the daytime highs for in the parts of the bay area for memorial day, it will be 104 in concord, 10 degrees hotter than today. today it was already noticeably hotter, with a 20 degrees jump from yesterday. but we are putting on another 10 degrees. this is the issue, if we take a look at the bay, let's take a look at san jose, oakland and san francisco. these numbers are a lot better, still hot, but at least not hot enough for the heat advisory. and you can see who's got it and who doesn't. it's the north bay and the east bay valley which we don't have included here. by the way the excessive heat warning is for the solano county and the rest of the sacramento county. i will be back with the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. >>> a beautiful memorial day weekend and as we take a live look at the bay area bridges, air-quality officials are asking drivers to be aware of some changes for tomorrow. kenny choi is live in richmond with help the f

darren peck with the latest forecast. >>> kpix 5 bringing you ducks when needed.e you seen what's going on today? there is a lot of lightning on the hi-def doppler. i showed that to you at the top of the hour. we picked up a quarter inch of rain in the ukiah hills. if we come back to this now, there are the showers that moved through, this is the band i looked at a little while ago. and this is far enough away from the radar, being far enough away from mendocino county that we are probably scanning a pretty high section of this. so what comes next? if you look back at where the real action is you can clearly see it is over here. but if you look at it a slightly different way, you've got to see this storm and the water vapor really got a handle on it. look at it spinning around the donut hole. the way the systems get organized, it's almost always this northeast corner right here where the most exciting weather will be. showers from the air will get thrown over the shoulder of this thing. and through overnight hours we will get another chance for the them to rotate

let's get to darren peck with a check of our weekend forecast. >>> you can add damp to that. look at the lens from the camera on top of the mark hopkins hotel. those are rain drops. if we look inside the clouds on high def doppler, you see a little bit rain right off the coast. there is not a lot to this. but we have gotten enough light mist over the past few hours that many rain gauges, specifically towards east bay hills and over on the city peninsula side, have picked up about .01 of an inch. we'll look at futurecast and show you what's coming. this is not going to be a rain out but i will have the details. back to you. >>> a search is on for three shooting suspects on the peninsula. someone was shot about 9:00 last night near san mateo high school. there was a large police presence including a k-9 unit and more than a dozen officers. this was the scene just outside the san mateo adult school located on the high school campus. so far, there is no word on the condition of the victim. >>> also developing, investigators are zeroing in on cause of a massive fire in concord. la

team coverage on the fire danger and how crews are preparing for it, beginning with meteorologist darren peck. >> we will start off with the number. just happened early this morning, 76 miles per hour. mt. st. helena is the poster child for where the offshore winds can be the strongest. in this case, the most dangerous. look at diablo. already over 60. for most of the rest of us, the communiies where you live, wind gusts have been in the 20 to 25 mile-per-hour range. it is not the kind of wind that brought out the red flag warning. here is how this red flag warning is different than the one we did last week. this includes the mountains of the north bay and not only the mountains of east bay but also the valleys, which is why we saw smoke coming from that brush fire in benicia. we are going to hear from wilson walker in one second. if we come back for the wider view, the red flag warning stays in effect until 6:00. i wanted to give you a slightly different way to look at this to gain a little more perspective. we have all got to be concerned, especially if we are included in the red flag warni

. >> reporter: darren peck is here to tell us what our chances are for that night. >> it is tough to say exactly what the marine layer will be doing. if we have anything getting in the way it would be the marine layer. it is starting to slowly come back, i will show you how this works out. there are things on high def doppler right now. this is been the case for the last three days. right now, there is not a lot, as you come in for a closer look there are a few left over flurries that are falling in the sierra and this is pretty much going to start winding down but since it looks so pretty up there, that is the view have up at squaw valley. up at the top, that gives us an overview. i have watched this throughout the day and at times it has been a great out and other times on that brown was covered so the light dusting of snow made it look like there was a lot of snow and bend the light of day melted it off so fast because there is only about that much. and by tomorrow, it is going to be history but some of the other patches on their have been there for months and they will still be t
