meteorologist darren peck is here with a closer look. >> is is wolittmore. this. a minor 2. eight earthquake before to a clock in the morning. it was felt by people. you can see it on the map but it was not felt strongly or all that widely. however, since it was within seven miles of an earthquake that was felt on monday, you can see how close those are, i will put the label on. about seven miles distant from epicenter to epicenter. the one today, a 2. eight, can you see the line here? that is the calaveras fault running up and down 680. this morning the quake was not directly on the fault but it was much closer to that fault then the earthquake that happened on monday. that one happened over here, almost directly on the hayward fault. so, it's always good to gain a little more perspective. no reason this will turn into more earthquakes at this point. in case you're wondering how the two fit together, that is an overview come i will be back on the forecast coming up in a bit, for now, back to you. >>> it's already painful to fill up your guest in the bay area, get ready to s

we have team coverage of the holiday heat starting with neurologist darren peck. >> first i will show you what we did today. we did not break records. happily. but we can close. daytime highs came out to 100 for livermore, 90 in concord and big differences depending on if you were inland or if you were in the bay a little bit closer, still warm in san jose but not like the 100 and you can see how far away from records we were, nobody got there and some of us, you know, places that were closer to the influence of the bay, san jose, san rafael, miles away. sonoma misted by 15. having said all that, it is still hot enough out there now for the next few hours anyway, the heat advisory still in place until we can until 9:00 tonight and the inland valleys and it is still in excessive heat warning for solano county and the rest of the sacrament of valley and there is still a spare the air day for today. there is not one for tomorrow. i have such good news in terms of the cooldown for tomorrow, and how dramatic it is going to be, i'll have that coming up in a bit. for now let's check in with

right to meteorologist darren peck with a look ahead at the heat wave. >> we have a couple of days before this sets in. really talking about wednesday but especially thursday and friday. those are the two hottest days. and for right now, the excessive heat watch includes inland parts of the bay area. specifically solano county but that's likely going to be expanded over the next few days. and here's why. we're going to use inland locations of the bay area as the example. 84 is the average daytime high and that's what we did today. that's what we're going to do again tomorrow but look what happens over the next five days, that's a huge spike in the numbers. and i've got daytime highs coming in around 105 for inland spots, think of concord, that's you. you are going to hit 105 on thursday but you are one of the hotter spots. we are not all going to do this and it will be experienced quite differently depending on what part of the bay area you are in. i'm going to show you the detailed differences for how we'll all experience this coming up in the complete forecast in a few minutes. but for

let's go to meteorologist darren peck in for mary lee. >>> thankfully that's not because of heat that we are going to experience here first hand. that's because of the intense heat in the rest of the state. we are blissfully unaware in the bay area that there is pretty strong heat wave happening now. we are not going to experience much thanks to low clouds and marine layer that have covered most of us. that's what it looks like from treasure island looking towards the city. temperatures are comfortable at 60, a warm start to the day. afternoon daytime highs will come in at average or maybe a degree or two above. i will show you those numbers. there is the marine layer. it's got the south bay covered. tri valley in the gray. clouds will melt back by late morning for just about everybody except the immediate coast. it's sunshine today and daytime highs in the upper 80s inland. that's a couple degrees above average but it's certainly not hot, not like the rest of the west is experiencing. >> you want to be careful with that marine layer on the roads. it's a little foggy. if you are a com

. >>> meteorologist darren peck is here. hopefully we will be able to see the pink triangle. >> it'll be touch and go, a lot of the city is already getting overtaken but before i get there, i want to start this forecast on day six through 10. this shows you what the degree of confidence is in the temperatures being above or below average. looking specifically at the time frame, the deeper you get into the shades of blue the higher the confidence the temperatures will be below average. as we look at inland locations, 81 would be average. we got close to that today, but look at what happens as we go toward the end of this week and get to monday. see the temperatures finally take a dip. that's what you have to do when there is nothing happening for the first six days. the drop we did today, the cooldown already happened from yesterday to today. now we arjustat what we did today over the next six days. we didthbig drop, you can see how we did it. that's where twin peaks is over here where we are likely going to have clouds on an

let's start with a quick check of our weather with meteorologist darren peck. >> a gorgeous view from our camera that sits on top of the mark hopkins hotel. the sunrise came up at 5:48. we have already had about 15 minutes of this show in sun. those clouds are not widespread. they are just right in the heart of the immediate bay. most of us with clear skies. the temperature is out there right where you would expect them. mid-50s for most places. oakland in the low 60s. it is a cool 45 in santa rosa. as far as daytime highs, exactly like yesterday. more sunshine for just about everybody today. we will be in the mid-80s inland, low 50s at the beach. >>> a federal judge has overturned california's three decade old ban on assault weapons. the decision came from a judge in a san diego last night. he ruled that it blocks, residents from owning guns which are legal in most other states. at the state capitol this morning, governor newsom is blasting the ruling saying, quote, this decision is a direct threat to public safety and the lives of innocent californians, period. he went on to say tha

. >>> and our team coverage continues with darren peck. >>> considering what happened last year and with so of us are bracing for in terms of smoke getting pulled back our way. this is a good news story in that regard so far. you can see the lava fire? high resolution satellite shows a little plume of smoke. way up there on the northern edge of the state. first of all there's not a lot of smoke at this point being put in to the sky. there was more yesterday at this time. it's all going forth. that's the flow in the atmosphere. here is another way avenue looking at it. smoke concentration showing up as orange or red. look where it's going. in general the smoke will get pulled away from us for now. we have to watch this. if that fire doesn't get contained it's only a matter of time before the winds shift direction. thankfully i don't see any strong northerly events in the near future. we will watch that. back to you. >> thank you. >>> an east bay neighborhood was rocked by a small explosion possibly linked to fireworks. justin andrews talked to neighbors in walnut creek about what they fel

with the details, here's meteorologist darren peck, darren? >> brian, you can tell just by looking at the red bullseye over the west on the long-range forecast, this is day six to ten. let's be clear, this is not happening until about the middle of this next coming week, but it looks intense enough it's time to start talking about it now. take a look at the average daytime high for inland locations. about 84 this time of year. we were pretty much there today. we'll be there again tomorrow. watch that line take off like a rocket. and that's 104 for daytime high for many inland spots here in the bay area. these numbers would apply specifically to places like concord and livermore. i'll be back with the rest of this forecast coming up in a bit. we'll take a look at the rest of the bay area as a whole, for now, brian to you. >> with a heat wave in store, there are worries that the power grid could become overloaded. while no outages or power disruptions are anticipated, you never know. they're monitoring conditions and could issue flex alerts. >>>

let's go to darren peck in for mary lee. good to see you. >> good morning. happy to be here. i will try to put the heat wave in some context even though we are not getting the sweltering heat. first, at home we've got mist on the lens. this is from the top of the mark hopkins hotel. the marine layer is doing such an excellent job of shielding us from the much broader heat wave. low clouds over san jose in santa clara valley. temperatures are all in the upper 50s and even though we are going to warm up a bit, you see where the marine layer is, it's widespread, we are going to upper 80s for inland locations. that's three or four degrees warmer than yesterday. subtle enough to notice but not that big of a deal. in the bay you don't notice a thing. everybody will get sunshine by 10:00. i will see you with the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks so much. >>> we are looking at the altamont pass, slow going for super commuters coming from tracy. west bound highway 580 as you travel through the pass, it is a 45 minute drive from highway 205 in tracy to dublin. chp high w

. >> i won't need any but let's head to darren peck. he has that good hair. >> i have had to use plenty to get ready for this newscast. and it's not windy in the studio. we have already had a 40-mile an hour gust. we will go to the other, mount diablo in the east bay with sunrise at 5:48. it is windy already. the wind here where we live at lower elevations like looking from treasure island to the city, how gorgeous is the start of this day. the wind for the majority of us starts at noon. that's when the wind advisory goes into effect from noon until 8:00. a lot of us are under the wind advisory but not everybody. even if you are not in the wind advisory, plan on it being noticeably breezy and cooler, upper 70s for daytime highs inland and upper 60s in the bay. how is the drive? >> busy through altamont pass. you have those brake lights getting onto 580. things are already gusty through the altamont so they issued a wind advisory overnight. if you are in a high profile vehicle, be extra careful through there. it is pretty busy for your r

darren peck is here. >>> a little perspective on bad this is. 114 today in portland, 107 in seattle. those will break records for hottest it's been in either of the cities and that record was just set yesterday. this is not for this particular day. this is the hottest it's been in the cities ever, since we have been keeping records. i want to bring you back nine days ago because there is a local connection to the heat wave. in the long range forecast going back nine days ago, this map looks weird, but this is one of the high resolution forecasts we would look at to get an idea on what's coming down the road. as of nine days ago the forecasts were spitting out absurd numbers. they're small here so i will write them on the side. we were supposed to get up to 109 in concord today if you believed this, 126 in redding if you believed this. numbers seemed so absurd we didn't believe it and said let's give this time. there is probably a kink in the model. it never changed on the intensity. what happened was it shifted focus to the north and instead of the intensity of the heat wave over us

darren peck is in the san ramon valley tracking the first flex alert of the year. >> reporter: in danville where it feels great now. earlier it was one of the locations that lost power. because of the heat today. and as paul rented out, tomorrow will be the peak of the heat wave, and that is when we can run into some bigger concerns. we are just getting started with this heat wave and already thousands of people across the bay area lost power including 3500 here in danville. that is why cal iso want you to know that there are all things we can do to help. >> tomorrow between 5:00 and 10:00 p.m. we are asking people to set their thermostats to 70 degrees or higher, to avoid using major appliances and turn off all unnecessary lights. >> reporter: and it will be hotter tomorrow, for some of us, a lot hotter. we topped out right around 100 here in walnut creek at heather farms park. but it's tomorrow, specifically here, not just walnut creek but across the entire diablo valley where we will see temperatures jump perhaps as much as another 10 degrees on thursday. >> this is heaven compared to w

. >>> all right speaking of weather let's check in with meteorologist darren peck with what's next. >> going to start out in the tri-valley because this is where we have a ten degree cooldown today. thanks to a strong onshore flow. we're not looking at clouds here over dublin. but you can certainly see them over the golden gate bridge and this shows you a strong on shore surge low clouds for the bay but cool air that kept going from here into those inland valleys. and we got a nice benefit of a cooldown on that. let's switch back over to the weather computer and i'll get some more numbers on here if we want to just take that full. there we go. now monitor looks like it's waking up. look, it's 86 in concord and 65 in oakland and 81 livermore and 66 in san francisco. so what happens next? we're going to take these numbers from where they were today a little below average, and they're going to start to climb a bit. so by the time we get into monday and tuesday, we're back up into the 90s. so it's going to get a little warmer if you are inland but it's not going to get terribly hot. we're

meteorologist darren peck in for paul heggen this evening, and darren, will we get any relief heading into the weekend? >> we're going to get about that much cooler tomorrow, liz. and it will feel better by the weekend. and by next week, it's like this never happened, but tomorrow is going to be almost as hot as today. so let's review. here's what we did today. we got up to 107, concord. 107, livermore. we saw temperatures at 107 in danville. we made it to 95 in downtown san jose. look at san francisco at 80. and as we go up to the north bay valleys, it was just as hot here. so starting on those north bay valleys. let me spotlight the heat advisory that stays in effect here until 9:00 tomorrow night. but watch what happens when we change the colors and it's a lot more intense for an excessive heat warning. this stays in effect until 9:00 tomorrow as well. those are for the inland valleys of the east bay, and just to give you a quick sneak peek overview, those are the daytime highs tomorrow. they are better. they're not a lot better, but they are at least a move in the right direction.

darren peck is here with which days will be the hottest. >> thursday and friday.morrow you won't notice any difference. it will be just as nice tomorrow. but the excessive heat watch has been issued for thursday, friday and saturday. this was actually issued yesterday. which was really far in advance, and it gives you a good idea of how serious the national weather service is here at home, solano county for now but we will likely see other counties included in some kind of heat messaging. let me show you why. in general, inland parts of the bay area, 84 is the daytime high average. low 80s tomorrow. look at that arcing line. that's why wednesday, thursday and friday will be the peak. there is a lot more to go through on the pacific, and i will show you how this will impact almost all of the bay area in some way. >>> with the heat wave in store, the power grid could become overloaded. so they are monitoring conditions and telling people to conserve energy to avoid outages. >> in the past it has been really impressive, what we've seen. with everybody doing just a li

. >>> and of course from venice to darren peck and a few changes ahead for our own forecast. >> cooler for much of next week which might not have been expected considering the theme so optimally has been it is a warm or windy. the temperatures will be below average for most of next week. we are not there yet so let me show you today. today was relatively warm. we were back near 90 from any inland spot, hot inland and it was clear here in the bay, at the coast, that is a real pretty view from the top of the tower, looking back down to the golden gate bridge. no marine layer. so here we are first full week into june and june gloom is nowhere to be seen. and you will wake up tomorrow and in the bay, and pretty much the entire bay area will have sunshine. may be a few morning clouds. but not the kind that last long and they will be beautifully sunny, even in the morning. tri-valley, you had sun all day, okay,'s though let's put some numbers on this to go if we look at the current, pretty much right off the time of day when we hit our highs to the concord already hit 90. livermore was up to

but darren peck is here to tell us all about it. >> it will be cooler for one thing.on that, i want to show you how today started. look at this time lapse from our camera on top of the sales force camera looking off toward the east. we will go back to that for a second. i want you to see how smoky the sky was. that was smoke coming up from the fire burning down in big sur. the willow fire. there will be more smoke coming off that fire. whatever smoke does could get pulled our way. you saw the direction it was coming from here. they did a pretty good job with that fire today. yesterday was around 2,000 acres. today, the latest official total is it is just a little over 2,000 acres. it doesn't put a whole lot of smoke into the sky. so, a good sign for that one. >>> current temperatures out there right now. this map wow daytime highs for, you know, a different time in the year. look at the low 70s . in the inland valleys. mid 50s in the bay. there are some big differences here and we will take a look at morning lows tomorrow. we get everybody into the 50s . san jose, you

let's begin with meteorologist darren peck. >> there is a very hopeful sign in terms of bringing this to an end. look at the low clouds, that just over the last hour or two have started streaming in in front of the golden gate, that is cooler marine air starting to filter in. it wasn't on time to help today. these are the official daytime highs, hit 100 and livermore, a look at the differences here, closer to an influence of the bay like san jose was only at 85. we were not even close to records today. livermore would've been the closest and we missed that by 4 but if you look at sonoma, san jose, in san rafael, miles away because you were getting at least a little bit of help from the bay. that is when those locations are really not even included. but the image balance of the north bay and east bay are still technically in this until 9:00 tonight and there is an excessive heat warning as well for solano county and the rest of the valley that stays in effect until 9:00. i will show you the temperatures dramatically improved tomorrow, coming up in just a few minutes, for now, let's che

we have team coverage on the dangerous heat and we begin with meteorologist darren peck. >> with got to get to the next few hours. by tomorrow it is going to feel so much better. but for today, look at the numbers over my shoulders and you can see a take spread and the colors from the greens at the coast, where we have daytime highs in the upper 50s right now for the beach is adamant 70s and the city but near 100 for many inland locations. the daytime highs for this day, the more hit 100 degrees, congress only want to be behind i am sonoma was pretty much right there. but we did break records. in fact we were safely removed from getting the record territory by about four or five degrees come in most places. you can see how much we miss, san jose and san rafael were likeke 40 dedegrees from record but the heat advisory stays in effect until 9:00 tonight for the north bay valleys and the inland east bay valleys and let's not forget it is an excessive heat warning if you are in solano county or farther inland. i will be back with more of the complete forecast coming up in a few minutes.

spring evening to close out the weekend but things will change in a few hours so let's get right to darren peck with the week ahead. >>> it is breezy through the trees in walnut creek, but the view from the top of the sales force out on the bay, it has been windy for the last few days. however, it does get noticeably windier here in for a wide part of the bay area so i will show you the areas the national weather service has put under a wind advisory for tomorrow starting at noon and going until eight a clock in the evening. it is the entire north coast and the north bay mountains and not the valleys appear but it is the city, the coast stretching down the peninsula and now here is probably the most important area for the greatest population centers that will feel this. the inland valleys up-and-down 680 and diablo valley and into contra costa and gusts up to 35 tomorrow and noticeably windier tomorrow than today and extending down the coast and watch what happens. i will play this from about 10:00 tomorrow until 5:00 the brighter the color the stronger the wind so when we checked back and comp

darren peck has a different message.s all the sunshine we are getting. and not have any of the gray. we will do this again tomorrow. the real headline is the pattern we are going to be in for the next week, which is going to do us a favor, if you want to keep temperatures on the relatively cool side for this time of year, we've already had a couple of heat spikes. so overall, maybe this is a good sign, and if you like cooler temperatures, hopefully you will like this because next week, we will be doing that and it is interesting how the pattern will set up for us. first, this is the place here on the marine layer. you see ending? none of it. not showing up. we will probably wake up tomorrow morning like we did today with a little bit of mid level clouds kind of hanging around the bay and by the time you know we get to like seven, eight in the morning they will have melted away and be gone. but even though we don't have the marine layer coming on sure, we are going to have the wind, so it is kind of counterintuitive, but
