we hand it over to first alert meteorologist darren peck. >> to give you the perspective of where the smoke is coming from, this is a look from where the plume is coming from the oak fire, and here we are, bay area, and you can see the beautiful marine layer out there, and a little perspective of how much smoke the fire is putting out there in the atmosphere, and where it is going from our concern, and if you are watching the high resolution forecast, for the rest of today, we are fine and the rest of monday, okay, but there is going to be a shift of the wind in the next 48 hours, and by monday evening a lot of the smoke is being pulled in our direction, but that is the entire column of the smoke in the atmosphere. what we care about is what is down on the ground. and in other words, what could get directly into our lungs, which is a better story, because if we are just liking at that layer, most of the smoke is staying in sierra. we will be watching that closely, and i will have more on the oak fire coming up in the complete forecast, and in the meantime, the temperatures are coming

. >> let's go straight to the one who knows about our air quality, that's darren peck. i guess we should be bracing for tomorrow. >> i'm going to show you what happened in tahoe today. their sunrise, that's all smoke. looks pretty weird. but these are images we got used to seeing on almost a regular basis up there over the last few years. and the air quality, in fact, we can switch over to the weather computer. these are the right-now readings. look how all that red is just kind of congregated right down in the basin, which really does act like a bull and it traps bad air quality. we're not going to get that bad. but if we take a look at that plume of smoke coming off of the oak fire, the deeper the shade of red and purposefule, the hig the concentration of smoke. the flow in the atmosphere bng smoke our way. and you'll see why tuesday morning is probably the time frame when we start to notice this more. now, most of this is going to be elevated. and we should not have a significant inundation of smoke down here at the ground. if we look at this a different way, instead

darren peck is in for paul today. >> especially that location, sara. those two fires, you could have thrown a rock between each of them and hit it. we've been watching the marsh fire from our camera on top of mt. diablo. we've been monitoring the smoke. watch what happened in the foreground? that's the alta fire, the del view view golf course. both of them in the same view, in a part of the bay that did not need anymore smoke in the air. we've been dealing with unhealthy air from the marsh fire for several days. the good news is on both of those, the alta fire has been contained, virtually not putting anymore smoke into the air. the marsh fire is putting less smoke into the air today. if you look at the air quality sensors, it's moderate. over the last several days, each morning it has gotten unhealthy except this morning. this morning it only went to moderate. we've been improving the air quality there. the wind will keep flowing from west to east out there. whatever smoke is still coming off that marsh fire, lit continue to get drawn downstream. we'l

. >>> darren peck with weather. temperatures continue to climb. >> yeah. >> not greatest conditions for firefighters. >> no. and it's still burning, good containment lines but started six weeks ago and today flared up so much, plume of smoke was visible from the satellite, 20,000 miles. and time lapse from the camera on mount diablo. when it started to get better behaved later in the day, still looked big. pittsburgh power plant is not at risk at all. major things that burned was grove of palm trees which looked dramatic, but just vegetation. they're confident it's just going to remain vegetation until it hits san joaquin river and goes out or it rains. hopefully the river because it's not going to rain for a while. show you the vantage point. wide view over the bay, that's where the fire is burning. going to remain windy next hours. concern would be air quality. surprisingly it worked out okay. spoke to people one orange for pittsburgh. go easy on yourself through that part of the bay for air quality. one other thi

and darren peck has been keeping an eye on those conditions. >> we could probably think of this as like a training run to get reacquainted with smoke inundation into the bay area. there's the big view by the way. here we are with our beautiful healthy natural marine layer. that is the smoke coming off of the washburn fire. we're going to switch the view now instead of looking at updating realtime high-resolution satellite, here's high-resolution forecast modeling on where that smoke is going to go. the deeper the shade of red and purple, the higher the concentration of smoke. if that fire keeps putting out the same amount of smoke, the winds in the atmosphere are going to shift over the next 24 hours, and that's going to start bringing some of the smoke our way. that's tomorrow morning. when you look at a smoke forecast, there are two distinct ways to look at it. you can look at the entire column of the atmosphere, which tells you something about the direction. but ultimately what you care about is how much smoke will actually down at ground level where we all breathe this stuff in. thi

. >> tracking the fire and our air-conditions, darren peck. >> we have been watching the smoke and itk off over the past three hours. i want to you watch the plume of smoke that really starts to take off. we're seeing it start to bubble up as you get higher above the level that would be kind of stable, right there. cal fire is using terminology for this fire like explosive. let me show you another way. first question probably has to be, at least from a local standpoint -- we're going to have a lot of coverage on this fire for the conditions on the ground. when you see that much smoke in california, i think a lot of people think, how much of this is coming our way? it does start to drift our way by monday afternoon. for the rest of the weekend, we should be fine. no matter how much smoke is coming off the fire, the atmosphere wants to keep it away from us. monday afternoon, the winds shift. that's something to watch closely. at that point it looks like it would just be smoke in the upper levels and not an inundation at the ground. i'll have more updates coming up in the complete foreca

. >>> first alert meteorologist darren peck is joining us now with the latest on some fires, especially the pittsburg area right now. >> another water front story that's maybe not as pleasant as that one. but the smoke that's going through that part of contra costa county has been a problem, and just take a look at the live picture. that is live. this is from our camera that sits on mount diablo, looking out past pittsburg. you can see the old power plant there. you can see the smoke still coming off of the marsh fire, and we recorded a time lapse of this from the morning. it's just been going like that all day. it did get a little better in the afternoon. it started to pick up within the last few hours. and if we look at the air quality sensors out here again, most of us are doing great, fearing green, air quality is good. but a close inspection of those areas that are downwind of that persistent marsh fire, you start to see the reds and the oranges where we start getting into unhealthy levels here. if you can smell smoke, you don't want to be out in it. you can see a pattern here, it

and for more on that, let's get to our first alert meteorologist darren peck. >> that would be the better case scenario, juliette. if we see the smoke in the distance and don't have to breathe it in, we're doing okay. the concern is how much of this smoke is going to get to the lower elevations and get into our lungs. first, that's where it's coming from. just a quick orientation on where that oak fire is in relation to us. here we are at home. beautiful marine layer along the coast. you see the bay area the other side of the state. the good news is there is less smoke coming off the fire today than yesterday. the bad news is the wind is about to shift. so if we look at this in terms of the high resolution forecast, the deeper the shades of red and purple, the higher the concentrations of smoke, let's play this forward into monday and watch the winds shift here. into monday, but more problematic tuesday morning. now we're seeing more of that smoke overhead. but as you've probably remembered, if you've gone through this with me the past couple of fires, you have to look at this in two ways

will the forecast be as we bring in those fireworks and the man who has the answers, meteorologist darren peck. >> one of the best ways to answer that, ryan, is to go to the front lines where this batch of low clouds would be moving into the bay. this is the camera on top of sutro tower, watching the last hour and a half. watch the increase here as these midlevel clouds start to increase and eventually here on the last frame, you're going to see they pretty much just kind of take over and the camera's going to go gray for a moment. this camera is at about 1,500 feet. so that happens to be right about the same elevation most of the big fireworks would go off, right about 1,500 feet. so here's the forecast for three of the bigger shows across the bay. the one at pier 39 that so many people are coming into the city for, it's going to be a close call. the cloud base by then will probably be down to about a thousand feet at 9:00 when the show starts so some of the fireworks will probably be going into the clouds but if you're inland, away from the water, you are a go. concord, your show out at diab

speaking of hidden depths, ladies and gentlemen, here is the darren peck. >> i don't know how to taket of california is dealing with heat, the marine layer has been doing us a huge favor. needs to be discussed first is the possibility for the second half of tomorrow and monday for an isolated storm here in the bay area. it looks good we look at the first alert doppler. there is a lot of lightning in the north that sparked the mckinney fire. meanwhile, a little closer to home in the central sierra, the same pattern, this desert southwest summer monsoon, which throws thunderstorms our way every once a while has been in the seer the last couple of days. starting tomorrow, it will push this action our way. when this happens, it is usually not the most impressive thing, but if you remember, it was august of 2020 we had that lightning siege from the desert southwest. also pulled moisture from the metropolis storm, i digress, that will not be this. we do need to address the possibility that there is a slight chance for an isolated thunderstorms across any point of the bay area. second half o

let's check in with your weekend forecast with darren peck. >> hey, good morning. it's going to get a little warmer out there this morning, justin. temperatures will climb gradually the next several days and we have to start getting ready for low 90s again, which sounds far more dramatic than it is. we've had it really good for the last week or so with temperatures coming in below average. now there's a little bit of a warmup for sunday and monday, but not even as hot as we've been earlier in the season. we've been much hotter already this summer than we're about to get. real beauty view looking out over the city. early morning light is just starting to stream in on the horizon. you can pick it out from the top of the mark hopkins hotel. you can also see a few of the clouds streaming in over the immediate city. they haven't made it to the bay bridge or the east bay, but it is cloudy coming in over the golden gate bridge this morning, just right in through the golden gate. everyone else is waking up to enclosure skies. temperatures ranging from the low to mid-50s. i
