. >>> switching gears to weather, let's check with meteorologist darren peck. what a view of the golden gate bridge. >> no clouds, no marine layer. that's the scene from our camera on top of mark hopkins looking at the golden gate bridge. marine layer is coming back on thursday and it's going to change everything. it will get grayer. we might get morning mist. we will go through a significant cool down on thursday. after we do a little bit of a warm up tomorrow. today the numbers are pretool. iyou look at e temperature foe city, thw 60s. san jose which is looking at beautiful clear skies hasn't made it to 70 yet. average daytime high this time of year is around 80. if we look at how this will play out, it is breezy. it is not as windy as the last days and temperatures are still in way below average. look at the low to mid 70s for the inland valleys. those are about ten degrees below average. tomorrow gets warmer and noticeably cooler for thursday. i will show you that in the complete first alert forecast. >>> one person has been arrested and another detained af

canada is battling over 100 wildfires near iowa. >>> our first alert meteorologist darren peck joiningus in unfortunately this is all too familiar. >> it's impossible for me to see images like that without being brought back immediately to what so many of the last summers have been like here. this local stories happening on the east coast now but just a reminder for us about how different the fire regime is now across the planet as a whole. looking at the east coast every sensor shows you where the air-quality sensors are reading uncle with unhealthy and both had is on the planet. it is coming from the fires in canada. we look at the smoke futurecast showing the plume of smoke moving across the globe over the next few days, you can definitely see where the focus is. it's coming from mainly qu÷bec, canada from the fires burning. if you go back a link or even more, it was not necessary the fire but the intensity of the heat waves. many parts of canada experiencing the hottest may on record. the intensity of the heat primed with landscape is producing the fires. it happens to be the east

here is darren peck with what you can expect for the rest of the day. >> you can see temperatures in the south bay today on wednesday making it all the way up to the mid and upper 70s. we will go to 76 in campbell. 75 in san jose. 67 will be the number in hayward. we will skip over towards the inland east bay. right around 80 for some of our warmer spots. most of us will do the mid-70s. back along the base i will be mid to upper 60s. upper 70s in marin and then is right back here 80 once we get back into warmer climbs. san francisco and oakland shows not a whole lot of change there, but as we look at the north bay and south bay valleys, we will see those numbers warm-up into the weekend, and we will certainly see those play out. if you look at that mid land east plant communities, those will warm-up. small chance of rain early next week to go along with those cooler temperatures. >>> now, back to that $14 billion question. can a city with some very high-profile challenges make the most out of spending taxpayer money? san francisco's mayor london breed has now laid out her plan for th

we will bring in darren peck to explain this. it's june.e we talking about. >> a thunderstorm off the coast of marin that developed in the last 20 minutes. we are watching first alert doppler all morning. it has been impressive in the central valley weird enough on its own. look at that last strike there. good example how the day goes and this is a difficult forecast when a thunderstorm may develop and what part of the bay. this is why we broad brush it. 20% chance, particularly from the late morning to the afternoon. that last cell is so localized, something on that scale, even the highest resolution forecast models can't resolve that out several miles. but the ingredients are here for isolated thunderstorms. that is an isolated thunderstorm. now, that is happening over the water. but it could just as easily happened down 101 over marin. that is a near miss then a different morning commute. at this point we are clear over the majority of the bay. we will watch for showers like that. if we go to the big picture, a bigger complex down here.

. >> reporter: well, let's get to meteorologist darren peck to find out what it's going to loo like weather-wise for the parad tomorrow. >> it's just going to be a little marine layer. that's it. it looks fantastic out there now. there's not a cloud in sight. but tomorrow, the marine layer will be with us for at least the first aft of day tomorrow. it will stay gray and relatively cool. it will probably feel a lot like today. it's 61 right now over downtown san francisco with a beautiful clear view. if we put specific numbers on the forecast for tomorrow, this will cover the parade. down market street, kin of out towards the civic center the numbers in the upper 50s. i will be cloudy. there will be about a 15-mile per hour breeze and watching how it plays out, the marine layer takes over the entire bay. i'll let that go through the the late morning tomorrow. this is now quarter t 10:00 sunday morning, and we have a very persistent gray blanket over pretty much the entire bay. we won't be battlin fog, but it will be a june gloo tomorrow. the clouds may melt back, but they'll never clear the city

first alert meteorologist darren peck. alert weather day because there is a chance for thunderstorms. >> 20%. >> still hanging around. >> still aning around. >> we will put context on this. the storm prediction center is the organization charged with coloring the national map in oklahoma. very rarely do they color in california for the possibility of thunderstorms. we are on the lowest end of the scale. that tells us this is a low threat but it's a possibility. and just to put a little more detail on the context for the timing of this, we can say 20% chance of isolated thunderstorms and that's kind of broad brush but we can break that down into day parts and you can see it's late morning and early afternoon. right now there is virtually no chance for these hours in the morning. but in the evening it's wnto a% chance. late morninoo those are the two time frames to watch for. this a live look outside shows you we are looking at a typical morning. 56 in san francisco. first alert doppler shows us where the thunderstorms are.

darren peck is standing by with a look at what to expect the next couple of days. >> the chances are low, however, since it is june, and it is rare to get rain or thunderstorms, we have first alert status today and tomorrow. here is one way to kind of help put some context on all this. the next two days, this morning is already done. we did not expect anything. it is about a 20% chance tomorrow morning at about a 30% chance later. here is a quick snapshot takeaway on the likelihood of this. if you look at first alert doppler, we have thunderstorms in the sierra. we will likely see plenty more of that in the sierra as we have had the past two days. what is different about the next two days is an added impulse of energy coming over california, which will push some out of the sierra and perhaps develop over the rest of the state and the area. we are going to go into that in more detail in the first alert forecast and we will watch that high-resolution forecast in more detail. before we do that, the other weather will be cooler. it is going to stay cooler for the rest of the week at 69 d

we will bring our first alert meteorologist in, darren peck. we have seen a lot of smoke and this is you nor having improved. >> it is bringing back memories for us. >> it is a little bit triggering . >> that is why i say it is the local story. we are vulnerable down the road to see another inundation of smoke . maybe not this year with the wet winter but this could be the most important image explaining why the smoke inundation is as bad as it is. this is the evaporative demand drought index. the only take a wait that's important is that the images shown you the atmosphere ability over the previous week because it was so warm that we've been breaking that heat records in canada before the fires broke out which is really behind this. is the intensity the heat wave in canada experiencing early may through june. is not only that heat element alone. temperatures that warmed the warmer climate has more room to hold the water vapor and pulling it from the landscape. it is drying out the forecast, the forest and landscape more than it used to. it is

let's get to our meteorologist darren peck with more on this wacky weathe rs m h the bay and have beh liting up through the north bay in the last few hours. the behind the view of the static imagery so i can get held that storm is moving through at this point. fairly steady with a pretty good run of light rain. i have not seen thunderstorms developing right over the bay. we had a complex off the coast around 7:00 and 9:00 . had it been 40 miles east it would've been a totally different kind of morning. not to downplay the rain we have with the time-lapse impressive. raining across much of the north bay, napa, marin and sonoma. we will watch that rain to see if it built into deeper convection to provide thunderstorms. right now we can watch it on the future cast with that band continuing to move toward the west. were still in the time frame for the highs chance of where we could see isolated thunderstorms today. we have been bracketing late morning, afternoon and now have to get through the next several hours of early afternoon with the possibility of thunderstorms. san mateo and on to

and darren peck has been tracking the possibility of thunderstorms all morning. we're just trying to see some too. >> yep. we started with an impressive complex right off the coast. now, we are seeing summer moderate rain moving on the other side of the bay. but that is really what has still on the show. what a close call that was. it was just 60 miles inland, it would've been a very different story for our morning commute. there is your 20% chance of isolated thunderstorms. it is basically telling you you have a 20% chance to see thunderstorms at any location in the bay. we just missed that one. now, the rain coming in here from the east still has a bit too. still an isolated chance for thunderstorms through the late afternoon. it is really late morning and late after noon. those will be highlighted in red. those will be the likely time frames for this. in the meantime, walnut creek, already seen a few showers here. if we take time from walnut creek, we have a cooldown from this. whether you get the cooldown or not, we are all experiencing cooler temperatures. l

. >>> let's check in with darren peck. this morning, beautiful sunrise. the sun was out. >> is kind of funny in june, you are so excited to see blue skies! >> it is so windy that we completely destroyed the marine layer! the cold front came through and we have a couple of days of this, but i will show you in the complete forecast, the marine layer is coming back towards the end of the week with a vengeance. in the meantime, the wind that blew it out of here will make landings at sfo today, so anybody coming into the bay on a plane will feel a bit of turbulence. we had 43 mile per hour gusts today in san francisco and if you ke a across yocan see wind gusts still at the 20 to 30-mile-per-hour range. temperatures right now are in the mid 60s as we look outside and we don't really see any significant warm-up here. instead what we will see is a drop in temperatures as we look ahead. so when we get together in the first alert forecast, i will show you, going along with the return of the marine layer by thursday, we will take these daytime highs and bring them

first alert meteorologist darren peck explains how climate change is fueling this event. >> the heat wave happening in texas is so extreme that it is one of the easier things to pin a connection directly back to global warming. there is a high degree of confidence using attribution science which is a branch of climate studies to label how much more likely these things were under our warming climate. the deep red shades show that the heat wave happening in texas is five times more likely to have occurred now thanks to the added amount of greenhouse gas we have in the atmosphere. there is a very high degree of certainty that this is man-made. we can use statistics to better understand why we are seeing more extreme events now across the globe. we will bring in a bell curve of what temperatures have looked like across the historical climate before we went into climate change. if we split that down the middle with the average, over here is our range of temperatures. if you are in the middle this is where you would expect things to fall. but down here, this is where you get into the extre

here is darren peck. >> an explanation on why they're experiencing extreme weather in texas right nowt comes to heat waves. heat waves are the easiest thing to put a fingerprint on from climate change. there's a whole branch of science now that will try their best to do that. how much of this do we contribute to that specifically? and that is put together across the country and a way to visualize it and on temperatures for heat. that heat being registered today in texas is five times more likely under the current global warming, under the current concentrations. and than it would have been prior to the amount of carbon dioxide. why are we seeing more of the extremes? if you took all the temperatures in general that the atmosphere would have had before we started to experience the human induced climate change. put the line down the middle for average. that's the range of the average temperatures before it was like for global warming when you start to get towards the middle here. the most common numbers will be and the closest range to what you would consider average. when you get out t

. >>> darren peck is here now for a look at weather. heat wave. i heard that in the last weather segment at 5:00. let's focus on that. >> you heard noticeably warmer. >> okay, noticeably warmer. i'm taking it as a heat wave. >> it's a big difference from heat wave, and it's understandable because we haven't really had a situation like that. but the thing about what's coming, at the end of the next week is the temperatures are going to go for some places like five or six degrees above average. that's warm, it's not oppressively warm. the thing about that is it's going to be so different from what we're doing. today the daytime hies, low to mid-70s, that's it. i want to take the numbers and slide them over and pull out what the actual difference is from average for this time of year. these numbers are 10 to 12 degrees below average, and we've been stuck in that pattern so we think there's nothing unusual happening. look at the last two weeks, and you color in the map for where you are in terms of how far below average you are in relation to records,

let's toss it over to darren peck for what we can expect. >> a great start. you see that from that camera you were just showing amanda. it's the same story in san jose. we'll put a number on the start of the day in the south bay. for daytime highs today maybe the low 70s at best. the temperatures are not really changing at all. really from what we've done over the last few days and they won't change much going into the weekend. we're staying below average and the question now is what's up with these clouds. there's a small opportunity you might get a drop of rain over the weekend. if we look at the marine layer you can see how widespread it is. everybody is waking up to the gray skies. if we clear back by late morning it's going to be replaced by higher clouds coming in. from this weak area of pressure moving in off the coast over the nextud and daytime highs that are going to warm up into the low 70s inland. we'll be in the mid-60s to low 70s for much of the rest of the bay. that's what it looks like from now. we're going to look at this area of low pressure

. >> well, we have darren peck here. >>> my question is, when is this unusual thing going to go away? are leading in with that. i am starting this forecast after the seven-day forecast leaves off. we will see what the answer is in terms of temperatures. eight to 14 days. let's see what they have on that for us. cooler than average. look at the bars up on top. the deeper a shade of blue you are, the more confidence that it will be staying below average. this picks up where the seven-day below average leaves off. we are looking at days eight through 14. this trend is not showing any signs of breaking. and it is doing some impressive things. that is lot more you expect on a typical early summer day. for summer storms, there is an assist hear things to the coast that is really adding into the mix. you can really see that water vapor. this is why it feels relatively cool bay area wide. this is why the skies are cool. even when the marine layer was gone, we had this whole other set of clouds above it that never left. as well as his area of low pressure is around, did you see what i tried to
