meteorologist darren peck is tracking what we can expect. >> this is a beautiful wednesday afternoon. we are working our way up toward perfectly average temperatures for daytime highs. i will give you the overview on what our wednesday afternoon looks like when we topped out. it is numbers in the low 80s for the south bay. we will make it to the low 80s for the tri-valley as well . san francisco, you're average for this time of year comes in at 71 and that is right where you will be. inland contra costa county numbers are right on the mark and for the northbay having warmed up into the low to mid 80s today. there is an interesting change in the forecast for saturday. we are still tracking this opportunity for light rain. when we get together in the complete first alert forecast, we timeout the likelihood for this and we will talk about what the potential totals could be from this 10% chance of rain. >>> this afternoon, a major win % nearly 5 months. hollywood writers and once again pick up their pens. the strike declared over last night after board members are the writers guild of ame

first alert meteorologist darren peck is tracking our forecast. >> we are going to point out a littleof a cooldown coming up for our weekend. before we get to that, it is helpful to get where we are today. these numbers for today are right on the mark for average. you can see the temperature in the west bay. we are about one hour off of the daytime highs. we will hit these numbers within the next hour and the official center. mid-80s out in the tri-valley. take a look at redwood city in the 70s. out at the beaches, we are not getting a whole lot of sun. i don't know if half moon bay necessarily will but the general trend has been with the marine layer to hang on at the coast but it has been clearing out in the bay as we have already seen happen. we are looking at sunshine for the inland locations. temperatures in the mid-70s today for oakland and the mid-80s inland. take a look at the number here for san francisco. when we take a look back toward our communities in the north bay, temperatures through santa rosa and petaluma all climbing back up to right on the mark for average for thi

let's head over to meteorologist darren peck in for paul to tell us when things are going to get better. what did you say, saturday? >> saturday. saturday is going to get better, but we still need to take this seriously the rest of today and into tomorrow. i'll show you why. i've got an update to the map we showed you which did have mainly yellow on there for moderate across most of the bay. that's the scene from the top of mount diablo looking over inland contra costa county. the official epa sensor there just went into unhealthy for sensitive groups. all the rest of the official monitors are moderate. there's a number of sources for air quality information. the epa is the best one. you can also use the low cost sensors. you're probably familiar with purple air. here's what those say. there's a lot more of them. they update more frequently and most of them are unhealthy for sensitive groups now. here's the takeaway. the rest of today and tomorrow we still have an air quality advisory. it will be a little better technically, yes, but we aren't out of this. the next two days take it just

. >> first alert meteorologist darren peck joins us with a look at whether tomorrow will be any better. it's been so tough not really being able to go outside. >> i know. tomorrow will be pretty much like today, but today's better than yesterday. >> that's true. >> so we have started improving things. anybody who has taken an interest in making sure you're aware of the air quality has probably discovered there are multiple different sources you can look at. i'm going to show you both sources that give us the reading for what the air quality's like. the first one is the official one from the epa. these are the air quality sensors, the map we just showed you, where the entire bay was in yellow. that's good and it's an improvement. yesterday most of them were in the orange or red. there were plenty of sensors reading unhealthy yesterday. so today is an improvement on the official sensors that are calibrated by professionals and they only update once an hour. there's another source you can look at which a lot of people have gotten used to and those are the low cost sensors scattered over a

darren peck in the house, hey. >> good morning guys.you the way things look to start out friday morning. sunrise happening at 6:51. but we're looking at about the last 15 minutes of the time lapse from above the santa clara valley. two things going on here. you have got the marine layer down here and everybody i waking up to gray skies this morning. so whether you are in the santa clara valley, you are looking up at it. or any part o the bay area you are looking at it and you can see in higher clouds over here, just kind of cool. that's the view from the top of mount diablo. same bank of marine layer stratus. but there are some breaks out here. we're looking out to like clayton and you can see the delta out there. there are breaks of sunshine inland already but there are noun here that's that view from underneat the clouds for san jose. go to the city, no surprise. that's the view from the mark hopkins hotel where everybody is lookin at the same blanket of gray. here's how widespread it is now a little slow to melt back. by 10:00 a.m.,

darren peck is tracking what we can expect as we get closer to the weekend. >>> this turned out to bee day. thursday's daytime highs, a couple degrees warmer than wednesday. a lot of inland parts of the bay in the mid 80s. we will take a look at daytime highs in one second. we need to look at the weekend which is still the primary focus in the forecast. there is still a chance of rain heading our way. when we look at the satellite on the big picture you don't see the system coming our way as well as when we look at the water vapor. that kink in the clouds, that's it. futurecast can see that system brings it our way. by the time we have gotten to really tomorrow night, that system sitting off the coast. when we take this a step further in the forecast, you see a few showers are going to get pulled into the bay. it's not a widespread steady rain by any means but watch the band skirt the bay at least on the east side. models have waffled back and forth on placement and timing but the general idea is the same. there is a 30% chance we will see rain here on saturday targeting more so for a

now, let's bring in darren peck. >>> we use the sensors to see it. this is a view over the last few hours when you watch it. it will get towards sunset and that inversion becomes clear. you can see how the air is getting trapped in here. the weird set up is that the smoke is getting corraled. it is getting pull into the bay. look at what happened over the last two hours, look at it, deeper shades of red, you see the pattern all right in through the golden gate within the last hour it shaded back into the unhealthy category. it is the benefit of using the low-cost sensor. there is a lot more of them than the official epa sensors they are higher grade, calibrated better, looked at by technicians regularly. most of them are set up by people in their backyard. they are a great tool to see patterns like this. we are not out of this. when you look at what happened here is the smoke going back to noon today. see the deeper shades off of the coast. watch the breeze. it is going to settle. tomorrow. it is still here. we still have another air quality tomorrow

we should get some relief from all of that unhealthy air soon, but it's just part of the story darren peck is tracking. >> the atmospheric river is likely going to put the fire out that is producing office smoke. but, we have started a familiar pattern for this time of day, air quality is going downhill right now. it did yesterday at this time, and it's about to do it again. let me show you why. the sensors are scattered across the bay. this is a great way to pick out the patterns of what is going on. the orange is telling you where it is unhealthy for sensitive groups and we have been sitting there for far too long. what we are seeing through the city and the golden gate is more orange showing up, in other words, the air quality is going downhill just like it did yesterday. right through the golden gate, that is because we are starting to get the onshore flow and it is blowing a little more smoke. in the meantime, take a look at the santa clara valley. it is also a little bit worse down here because it pulls up along the base of the mountains. here is why the air quality is going downhill

first alert meteorologist, darren peck is tracking the air-quality and our first chance of rain. >> and the map you just showed fits right in line with what the smoke has been doing the last few days, it goes on again and off again. we are staying up right now. in general, the sensors for the inland valleys, there still a lot of unhealthy for sensitive groups out there. if we take a look at all of the low-cost sensors, that can give you an idea of the trends, we are going to come in for a close-up look at the bay, windows populate, you can see the influence the onshore flow has had. when we get this time of day when the wind starts coming through the golden gate fairly quickly, they will start pulling and more smoke. this was the time of the day yesterday that we saw the air-quality start to go downhill and it is starting again. using high-resolution imagery, here's the smoke, the deeper the shade of blue the higher the concentrations. watch what happens between now and 9:00 tonight. you pick up a little bit of smoke here and the concentrations go up. expect the air-quality to go down a

. >>> all right, darren peck is here now, and let me guess, gray skies in the morning tomorrow? okay. >> yeah, we are still in that pattern. it's kind of on overdrive. so grayer than might be typical by the middle of september. it's going to stay gray over the city maybe all day. a lot of people are getting together for the festival tomorrow. i'm going to show you what the forecast is for that specifically, but let's start off with that marine layer. here's what it's doing. it's start to be build back into the bay. by the time we wake up tomorrow morning, that's where it is. it's got the entire bay covered in gray. it'll melt back so that by the time we get towards late morning and early afternoon tomorrow, most of us are looking at sunshine, except you'll see kind of a persistent patch hang on up here through the petaluma gap. some of those north bay valleys looking at the clouds longer tomorrow than typical. and the city in the immediate east bay might stay under that ribbon of gray we're seeing in that time lapse. that might stick around a while. underneath that here's what t
