let's check out though with check in with meteorologist darren peck, who's in for jess today. hey, darren. >darren >hey. so we're going to go in order on this. ryan i'll show you what to expect for today. and then i want to give you a little bit of a preview of why, when we get together again in the main forecast, we got to talk about early next week because there's there are more systems coming beyond this one. but you can definitely see rain is already falling on the windows on the virtual set. and what you're seeing on the floor here is the last hour of radar. showers have already made it down well past the golden gate and out towards the tri valley, and it's on again. off again. so what we'll do is we'll look at the rest of today, we'll switch out the radar for now. and i'm just going to put on the futurecast, which basically takes us through the remainder of friday. and it just kind of looks like a bit of a mess. there's going to be a chance of rain at any point now for the rest of the day, for any location in the bay, you'll get some breaks, like many of you have some bre

meteorologist darren peck is here to talk a little about that rain. it's been almost a year since they've had rain, so yeah, let's get a little moisture, but what about the threat of mudslides? >> it's a small chance. you'd need one of these cells of rain to park right over a burn scar. this is a huge geographic area. >> yeah. >> it's possible, could happen, but it's a low grade concern. the bigger story is they're getting rain. >> okay. this is more of a benefit than a negative. >> it's more of a benefit. we have to message there is that chance. you could get a brief little isolated downpour over a burn scar which is why anybody in the southern california who is near one of those is very well aware of any risks and has to be on the lookout for that. when you look at the big picture, see this big mass of white up here? this is where the rain's coming from. this will happen in a very odd way. i want to show you how the rain comes together. this is going to start out as an inside slider and turn into what i'm calling a backdoor slider. look at the insid

let's start this half hour with a check of the weather with first alert meteorologist darren peck. >> this sunday morning and we have a chance for showers. take a look at the forecast model so we start this at the 5:00 or 6:00 hour this morning and there is not a lot left but there are light showers and maybe even some isolated snow flurries on mt. hamiliton and very little falling from the sky and not likely get much snow on the peak more rain in the santa clara valley. it will look stormy in the sky today but you will not get much rain and the story is it will be much cooler and if we look at where we are right now on the temperatures, most of us are sitting in the low 40s but there are a lot of mid-30s and the north bay and with the wind take a look at the offshore winds right now which are giving you a wind-chill factor so the numbers will feel cooler than that. bundle up, i think the bigger impact on this day is it will feel cooler , breezy to start the day and you notice that more than any light showers , a few isolated showers in the south bay. that will be it . we will talk ab

darren peck is here to tell us why. >> a lot of that smoke coming off of that, and then the water becomestants in the water. you cannot boil those pollutants out. people are being told mixed messages on what to do with water. i'll show you all the smoke that's coming off of these fires. we've looked at it in a number of different ways. the particulate matter across the country, southern california, a good plume being read as particulate matter. that's a forecast over the next few days. take a look at this afternoon. high resolution satellite on the monitor. that shows what the clouds have looked like. there aren't any, it's all smoke coming off of southern california over the course of the last -- that's about a three-hour loop on there. let's look at the fire in a different way. the progress has been back and forth in terms of the direction that the flames have been able to move. and what's been happening over the course of the last 24 hours or so is the majority of that. the leading edge of the flame front has been moving from the south to the north. let's come over to the monitor up he

. >>> let's check in with darren peck. i know we want to get our feet under us to try and figure out what's next. >> right now we're 50/50. it's not locked in as a guarantee. >> okay. >> the possibility is there we'll see another wind event and maybe it's like yesterday and even if that happened, remember, there were no new significant fire starts yesterday and that was a pretty significant offshore wind event that happened yesterday. while we raise our guard and concern now anytime there's an offshore wind event, it doesn't necessarily mean a repeat. it just means we all need to get prepared and start having resources ready to go. look at today, no smoke coming off southern california from 2:00 this afternoon. it looks great. you can see the forecast up here. i'm going to get over to the monitor because i want to show you what this next wind event looks like and how it comes together. we'll say good-bye to the hi-res clouds and bring in that forecast and you know the drill on these. it's the inside sliders, in other words

darren peck is here to explain this weather whiplash. >> it's more dry weather and more droughts, both of them on opposite ends of the extreme. weather whiplash is a term. it's uncanny, ryan, today a paper was released advising us all as we get into a warmer climate, we should expect to see the climate shift between bigger rains and drier dries and this has everything to do with what's happening in southern california. first, we've shown you pictures of fires obviously the last two years and been telling you southern california just finished one of its dryest years on record. that's what this map shows. well below average for southern california, but what we haven't told you yet is last year we were doing the exact opposite. we'll change our perspective now and take in the view of what southern california looked like last winter. do you remember that? be forgiven for forgetting. it's so easy to forget this. they were at 150% of average rainfall. that's the sepulveda basin last year in los angeles flooding. it wasn't just last year. the year before that they got 200% of rainfall, two hu

. >>> let's bring in first alert meteorologist darren peck now because again, talking about the weather, that is a huge factor. it seems like they've gotten some relief from the winds. >> yeah, they have. doesn't mean that the fires have completely lied down, but the winds at least are not as violent. >> right. and making it less likely to spread so far out of control. >> but they're still there and they're still strong enough that on a normal day these would be problematic winds. what happened to start this off was extreme. so at least we're not doing this. let me show you how this will play out. even if we're getting a bit of a break now, we can see what's coming on the big picture wind-wise. keep your eye on the gulf. that's the original area of low pressure that started this for us several days ago. that thing is already in the gulf. what we care about is what's coming next from upstream. i want to get us to monday when we see the next uptick. we're looking ahead to monday. there's your timestamp. this is offshore winds. it's very shuttle. let me just walk that line right there. tha

first alert meteorologist darren peck joining us now. what do you think about that? >> that will be the issue overnight. winds will get stronger down there. they've been strong enough for this thing to spread. but they still have a red flag warning that will go on overnight, and the stronger winds will come under the fire of darkness, where they've got a lot of resources on it. so let's hope it is not a bigger news story tomorrow. we would look at that in greater detail in my last visit, so i'm coming home. a couple issues to make sure you're ready for it. you probably already know this. it's going to be cold in the morning. it's going to be just as cold as it was for the past couple of mornings for you. the mid-30s for the north bay valley. we keep getting cold enough for frost advisories for most of those troubled inland spots whether it is down to the inland east bay now, all along 580, frost advisory there. danville, certainly livermore, concord. all right, that's tomorrow morning's lows and that is probably issue number one. issue number two, it will get a bit w

. >>> meteorologist darren peck here to talk a little bit about those conditions. a lot to worry about the red flag warning. it looks like that's about to wrap up. how relieved can we be? >> i think we would be pretty relieved. i'll give you a couple of visuals on why people are getting that sense that at least for this particular period of offshore winds, we've come through the worst of it and things are about to improve. atellite imagery first of all will tell you a very important feature. when we have huge fire outbreaks over the course of the week, you see them down here on the virtual map. when we have big plumes of smoke, you could see that smoke from space in the afternoon, and there is nothing on there right now. and so obviously we didn't -- that's just confirmation of what we already know. thankfully we didn't have any significant fire outbreaks. however, on this map, there is still an issue, when we would color in the maps, we would see that we still have an advisory down there, which will tell us that we need to be aware of the red flag warning until 6:

. >>> let's go ahead and get a check of our first alert forecast with meteorologist darren peck. it was chilly today as i came in. that's what i noticed. >> everybody, too. marine layer came back in. it was kind of like it was a may gray day. we're going to use the virtual set to track this because it's coming back tonight. first, want to talk about that fire that devin was just referencing. if you look at the time lapse today, see the plume of smoke coming off that fire? we'll play this twice. let's let that play through to the end. that's the marine layer that came in. you're looking at the last hour. there's still almost as much smoke coming off that fire as there was yesterday at this time, but we lose it within the last 30 minutes because the marine layer comes in and obscures our view. that's not necessarily ideal because one way to at least monitor the situation there from a distance for anybody to know if there was still smoke put into the sky, you could see it and now the manner layer will cloud that view. keep doing what your doing. keep those windows closed. stay away

darren peck joins us now with more on what we can expect this weekend. >> well, we got some light rainst three hours of radar, andrea, we've been able to see the showers develop a little more over the bay. watching the last three hours, just a few drops showing up here. barely enough to measure, but at least we've started to see some rain. if we look at what happens over the next couple of hours, in fact, we're going to play this forward from where we are now and let this go through tomorrow into the early afternoon. isolated hit and miss showers stay like this. you will get more breaks of blue sky tomorrow. it'll be on again, off again. most places won't get any rain from this, but you could just as well be the part of the bay that gets a shower. it wouldn't amount to a whole lot should we get it. look at the extent of this system, it has all of california involved, and this is going to be a much bigger rainmaker for l.a. let's get a better handle on how that's going to play out for them. close up look at southern california. if we add up the rainfall down there, they get way more tha

and darren peck says, you know, there are reports of some light rain around the bay area right now. >> yeah, i'm going to spend most of this visit talking about that. we'll track where the showers are and why there are not a lot. i want to start with something that looks better. friday. a week from yesterday, this coming friday, next system coming our way, both of the long range models now are in fairly good agreement we're going to get some rain. what we'll do, we'll say good-bye to the satellite imagery where we spread it out on the floor, as cool as that vantage point looks on it. and we'll just bring it back to the northern hemisphere for a moment, because what we're seeing develop out in the pacific now out on this side. so we got to go out -- pretty far out to find it. we'll see it play a little better when we look at it here. take a look at the time stamp up there. all the way ahead to friday. and it's late in the week. there's a nice line right there where the rain starts coming towards california, and both models seem to think we're going to get a little rain out of it. best
