[applause] daschle daschle we have a founding board member of families fighting flu.is family story has driven much of this work. and we have dr. gregory branch, the health officer and director of the baltimore county department of health and dr. l.j. tan policy officer and co-chair of the national adult influenza immunization summit. i welcome and they have traveled some distance even as early as this morning to be part of this and delighted they could be with us today and given their background and commitment, we are extremely grateful. one of the things we always hear and it is just the flu. and in so expressing that it's just the flu, a lot of us minimize its impact. how do you respond when you hear that expression? >> primarily with regret. my wife and i that's how we view too, to be honest. it was just the flu and wasn't something to worry about. when our daughter was diagnosed with flu, we were more worried about school and the inconvenient time. but what we learned from the mild illness, diagnosis, our daughter died in five days, healthy child. five days later

as senator daschle mentioned the triple-demic as we saw with covid 19 influence then you will probably wonder if we'll have it again and that's a good question. we don't know what's going to happen. the course it's unpredictable and we have other viruses now front and center of the flu circulating and we fully expect that we will see influenza active along with interstitial virus rsv as well as covid 19. when we look at what may happen this year we looked to what happened in the southern hemisphere. so is flu season somewhere and looking at that activity became precluded as to what might happen in the u.s.. so we are looking at what circulating in the third hemisphere primarily each one influence of virus different than what we had here last year. out at the 15 countries in the southern hemisphere that had the flu season only one country had co-circulating viruses of covid and rsv. we released a study of vaccine effectiveness of the net american countries last year 2023 we found people who got the flu vaccine were half as likely to be compromise with the flu is compared to those who di

and with tom daschle 's determined leadership. the by paulus bipartisan policy center is not partisan, it is bipartisan. i was the republican in the house and he was the democratic leader in the senate. those are clearly not nonpartisan jobs. but, i think we both felt then and still feel that the best solutions are found in the middle. they last the longest and have the most resilient. they serve as the best. a couple of congressmen congress is ago, there were 52 republicans and 40 democrats. you do so many things with other members to find one thing you can do great on, we thought we would find many of the 48 democrat you have been a principal sponsor of the bill with and not just a cosponsor. the answer was 44 and i thought it was a pretty good answer. in my last speech on the senate floor, i said to get something done, you don't have to find someone you really about everything with. you just need to agree on fun things and that agrees to getting things done. we came to the senate at the same time and worked on lots of things to
