dasha, today marks the first day of school for kids in broward county.s' orders by instituting their own mask mandate. what are you hearing and seeing on the ground there? >> garrett, broward county kicks off the school year in the middle of a political tug-of-war over masks. this district requiring them despite the governor's executive order banning mask mandates in schools and this tension came to a head last night in an emergency state board of education meeting where the superintendent of broward was questioned over this decision. it did get heated at times and ultimately, this district and another district also requiring masks were sanctioned by the state in the and the first fun tiff measures taken on these issues and it is not clear what those sanctions will entail. broward is not budging on this. they're looking at the data. last year they had 31,000 covid cases under the age of 19. this week this county lost three educators to the virus. i've been talking to parents here dropping off their kids and every single parent was in support of this mask

dasha, what can you tell us about this criminal complaint so far?eriff's office yesterday afternoon. it has not yet been made public. so we don't know the specifics of what is in that criminal complaint. but what we do know is what that former staffer alleged and the attorney general's report, her snaum not been made public. she is referred to as executive assistant number one in that report. area allegations range from inappropriate kissing and hugging to the most egregious accusation in that report, she claims that governor pulled her in for a hug and groped her, slipping his hand under her blouse and grabbing her breast. the governor denied this incident ever happened. he denied all of the allegations in this report. and i'll let my colleague tom winter handle the legal piece of this and those implications. it's important to remember, too, this legal piece is happening alongside the political here. law makers are moving quickly towards impeachment here. the governor's office has said they will cooperate with evidence. the deadline to submit that

dasha, thank you. >>> dr.ecifics about the third dose, let me ask you your level of concern about pediatric hospitalizations. what we're seeing in covid cases in younger folks. particularly kids under 12. >> what is happening, chuck, around the country and it's certainly true in the state of tennessee is that we have seen an increase in the number of hospitalizations of young children with covid. you know, this is difficult for people to understand and to grasp because they had heard and it's still true that if children get infected with covid, they're less likely to have severe disease. but all of a sudden we're having more children admitted with covid severe disease. how can you put those two together? delta made the difference. it's now being transmitted to people who are not vaccinated. and that includes some young children and it can produce severe disease. so, we're seeing an upsurge in pediatric hospitalizations across the country. >> and it should be pointed out that all of those studies about covid in

dasha, how bad is the covid spike among kids in tennessee, and more importantly, how sick are they?rter: steph, i'm in the highlands, a region where i've spent a lot of time over the last year. a lot of time engaging with the hospital system here, and their staff is telling me what they're seeing among kids right now the unprecedented. yesterday, among the cases in their system, 29% of positive cases were among those under the age of 18. stephanie, in washington county, the school system here only a week into reopening, they already have 50 students and staff testing positive, and 194 in quarantine. but, stephanie, despite that, there is no mask mandate in this district or the vast majority of districts in this area. there is no social distancing requirement. and while they're notifying parents if their child was exposed to covid-19, they are not requiring that parent quarantine that child. this is an area where this virus has become deeply political, a lot of parents very upset over a mask mandate. but i'm also hearing from a lot of parents who are scared for their children, especi

joining me now nbc news correspondent dasha burns live from brooklyn, new york. our white house correspondent for pbs news hour and dr. vin gupta. how will this mandate actually work? will it be enforced? and exactly how if you spoke to any businesses in the area have they prepared themselves for it? >> yeah. st this is a major step in a city hit so hard so early on. it will now be the first city in the united states to require proof of vaccination. if you want to go a restaurant, gym, or a performance venue. now this will launch officially on august 16th. the mayor said the next month will be a period of education, of talking to businesses in the public, making sure people know how this is going to work. then the enforcement period will start september 13th. city officials will be doing check ins, will be doing inspections and if you are coming into a restaurant, you'll need to show either that paper vaccination card that you get when you get the vaccine or a digital version. new york state has the app that is simple. it is a digital vaccination card. the city i
