dasha burns has the latest from garner, iowa. dasha, how are voters feeling here about where ron desantis stands, and how he performed in the debate? whether it moved the needle a little? >> hey, lindsey. the florida governor is inside this pizza ranch behind me, and if you don't know what it is, you haven't spent much time in iowa because it is a knock on a staple here. -- places and a whole lot of politicians visit. and the governor is celebrating his 50th county of 99 counties in iowa. he is planning to go to all 99, so this is the halfway mark. and the owner of this pizza ranch tells us that this is the most crowded he has seen this business since bill clinton visited. and that really tells you something. we've been following the governor for the last couple of stops here, he has been packing these places. and people are saying that since the debate, they've been more inclined to come and see him. the debate, as i've been talking to voters, seems to have cracked things open a little bit. seeing that stage without trump, what a political world post-trump might look like. and voters were interested and engaged seeing these politicians talking about the issues, and trump now sort of sucking all of the oxygen out of the room. and i'll tell you something, lindsey. when you are on the ground in places like iowa and new hampshire, south carolina, especially here in iowa, where people are taking their first in the nation caucus duties very seriously, you really do get the sense that trump does not have this in the bag. yes, there are people who support the former president, but they're interested in him and their shopping around and looking at other candidates. and there are a whole lot of voters that are meeting here that are saying they are completely undecided. there are people here who are showing up to listen, to hear what the governor has to say, and then take those moments very seriously. and there are four plus months before the iowa caucuses, and that is an eternity in the world of politics, lindsey. >> okay, i appreciate. thought dasha, former gop congressman joe walsh, and presidential candidates, and kurt bardella, democratic strategist and former house oversight committee spokesperson. joe, i have a multi pronged question for you. i'm going to throw a lot at you. first of all, have you seen any real impact on the race after that debate, without the front runner donald trump on the stage? and do you see a momentum for a campaign for what ron desantis is trying to do in iowa? >> well, here's what we know. look. i think this nomination was going -- i think it's always going to be of -- whether he has one indictment or 100 indictments. but lindsey, i'll say this. republican voters are will not -- an intolerant authoritarian -- to be their nominee. that is trump, but that's also desantis. and it's vivek ramaswamy. so i think desantis and ramaswamy, on that stage the other night, still an uphill battle, but they filled that role and i think they helped themselves. still a long shot. >> curt, to this point, the next deb

dasha burns in milwaukee for us and also mark murray. dasha, talk to me about what you expect to hear from the candidates tomorrow on the debate stage. >> reporter: well, look, you put a pin on the issue at hand. they will have a hard time with issue that so many republican voters think that donald trump won the 2020 election. i mean, this is why in my interview with florida governor ron desantis it took multiple followup questions to get him to admit that trump lost in 2020. because they have such a tough needle to thread with so much of the republican base at this point. and it will be interesting to watch and see how they do it on that debate stage where this is a major republican event, right? this is the first primary debate, the first time that lot of voters are really tuning into this primary and the frontrunner is missing and this is happening under his shadow. he is counter programming the event, forcing a split screw between the debate and his interview with tucker carlson and we know the hostess will be asking the candidates about him. so no doubt right now all of the candidates are in their prep sessions trying to figure out how they will thread the needle and walk the line, how much that they will go after each other, how they will deal with the trump factor. and florida governor desantis is probably the one with the most to lose here. he is the one that has the biggest name i.d., he is the front run other that stage. so the attacks will be coming his way. everyone else has an opportunity with trump's absence to really have a potential moment, introduce themselves more to voters. he is the one that has to be prepared to get the most arrows. >> mark, one of the questions has to be do you believe the election was stolen. seems like a softball. and when you look at the latest polling that we have with nbc news and "des moines register," you see that 51% of the respondents say they believe donald trump that the election was stolen. what room does that give the candidates, and to put it conversely, 41% say that they do not believe it was stolen. does that give somebody like chris christie a real opportunity to gain ground especially since he among the field is one of the only ones willing both to say it wasn't stolen and to go after donald trump directly and aggressively? >> yeah, i think there are two ways to look at it. on the one hand, yes, there is room to maneuver. the party is split among those likely republican iowa caucusgoers that were polled. and the poll shows that disproportionately if you believe that donald trump falsely -- his false claim that he is won the 2020 presidential election, you are more than likely to be one of his voters. someone who supports him for first choice in the poll. but if you are part of that 41% who say, no, i don't believe donald trump's claim that he is won, you are desantis voters, you are tim scott voters or maybe even chris christie voters. but i will also say this, that in a multicandidate field like we see right now, eight republican on the stage minus donald trump, that is nine candidates, that 51% is more than a winning number in iowa, new hampshire and elsewhere even probably 40%, 41%, 42% is a winning percentage. so those kind of -- donald trump's rivals will need to actually start get more to that majority even and pick into that if they want a chance to get the republican nomination. >> how do you do that when the majority is so firmly behind donald trump, how do you peel it away from donald trump? is the only other alternative to try to go after him? i understand chris christie's logic and i know it is a long shot, but i understand that more than i understand what ron desantis might be doing. because if it is not donald trump, then i mean, it will be donald trump unless he is taken out of the field for some reason. or decides not to run. what is the point in trying to be the runner up to donald trump? >> i think that the zike heist of this republican race and even with donald trump not on that stage, it is really about him and his leadership. and let me just run one other polling number by you from our most recent nbc news "des moines register" poll of iowa, and that is 41% of likely republican caucusgoers want donald trump to continue as their leader. that almost matches perfectly will his first choice in our poll with 42%. and you have 57% say maybe we'll consider other leaders. but i think that question gets at do you want donald trump to be the leader of the party and as long as you end up having 40% or more of the voters from your party saying yes, it will be hard for anyone else. >> mark murray, dashaaking news out of fulton county, georgia. let's bring back in lisa rubin, our legal analyst. so mark meadows is filing a petition in federal court asking a judge to make a ruling before friday that says that his case is moving to federal court or that fani willis cannot arrest him. >> that's right. so mark meadows already had filed what is called a notice of removal. he has a hearing scheduled on that notice of removal for monday. and it is not just any hearing. it is supposed to be an evidentiary hearing where you can present evidence, whether it is emails or hard copy documents or even put people on the stand. many of us were waiting to see how that would go down on monday. now mark meadows is saying, hey court, you need to decide that motion before friday because my lawyers have tried to work out a reasonable extension with the d.a.'s office and they are not having it. in fact in this motion, mark meadows' lawyers quote from an email directly from fani willis to one of the lawyers s

dasha burns in iowa and riina shaw, former republican strategist and senior adviser of republican women for congress. so, dasha, what more can you tell us about how the trump campaign is using this mug shot and how could it shape his presidential race? >> reporter: well, look, jose, they're using it as a tool, putting it on merch, on t-shirts, mugs, on all kinds of items. they're using it to raise money. why, you might ask, would they do such a thing? well, i'm in iowa, you said it, and our nbc news des moines registrar mediacom poll shows among gop likely iowa caucusgoers, 65% of them when asked if trump has committed a serious crime, they say no. now, does that mean that trump has iowa in the bag? not necessarily. he, of course, has a wide lead here, but that poll also did show that there is some softness in his lead, meaning there are voters that are very much undecided and still looking at potential other candidates, but this indictment issue, this is not going to be the issue that is going to move the needle for voters. and, in fact, it is the issue that we have seen time and time again, spikes his poll numbers, spikes his donation numbers. the fourth indictment, a little less so, we have seen with each one that people are less and less interested. but nevertheless this is not the thing that gets voters to say, no, no, no, i'm not going to look at this, this is too much. the people that are not necessarily trump fans may be, but for the base, this is not really moving the needle, jose. >> we read the indictments and legal battles have actually acted as fuel to trump politically. does that fuel ever run out? >> i believe the fuel is now running out and particularly with women. with republican women. when you see a mug shot like that, you see criminal action right there in front of your eyes, and that's hard to look away from and hard to really stand up for and frankly to just defend. republican women understand that it is now time, the walls have closed in with this fourth indictment, this president is now not only just under serious scrutiny, under the cases of the law, he could very well be disqualified. what they saw on stage the other night were very faint arguments that led them to understanding what is at stake. either the republicans get their act together and elect somebody new or they continue to stand behind somebody that has a very long road ahead and doesn't deserve defending anymore. i think this is the point which republican women decide to make their break and look at somebody new, whoever that may be in the field of eight that we saw the other night. >> what, rina, is making you come to that conclusion when we see how in the past these other indictments and all the issues he's been dealing with has actually benefited him? what are you basing that thought on? >> the fact that he had to pay a $200,000 bail, the fact he actually got a mug shot this time, and that there are 18 others who are taking the heat with him, slowly turning themselves in. this is just something like a slow train wreck. you can't look away. and at some point you can't keep saying that this is all part of the democratic ploy, the democrats have this big master plan to bury trump so he can't win the white house back. i look at this this way because nikki haley gave us a master class in how to move forward from a president rife with problems. she main checked this former president saying he added $8 trillion to the debt. republican women, take that kind of messaging, they internalize that and move forward in a calm and reasonable and practicaled measured responses, like nikki haley did the other night. >> and, dashain iowa. have any of the other candidates reacted to this? what is their position? >> reporter: well, look, if those voters that rina is talking about are out there and considering other candidates, these contenders are out here trying to win them over. the two gentlemen that split center stage at the debate are now splitting the caucus state trying to get folks on their side and trying to capitalize on the momentum from their debate performance. the newcomer to the political world, vivek ramaswamy and florida governor ron desantis are in the hawkeye state today campaigning. they both had what objectively is some of the polling is showing good performances. "washington post" ipsos poll shows the two came out on top and they are here trying to take advantage of that right now. and they couldn't have more different stories coming into this race. vivek ramaswamy, very little name i.d., a lot of people don't know how to pronounce his name. florida governor ron desantis coming in with a lot

dasha burns in milwaukee and shaquille brewster in waukesha. also with us, jeremy peters, "new york times" reporter and msnbc contributor. dasha, tonight marks the first chance for these contenders to make their pitch to voters on the national level. what can we expect? >> reporter: well, that's absolutely right, jose. that's why it is really unfortunate timing for governor burgum to have that injury. we're not sure if he's going to be able to make it on that stage or not. because for candidates like him, who is lesser known, doesn't have that sort of name recognition, it is a huge opportunity to try to introduce himself to voters who might be tuning in really for the first time, jose, after the dog days of summer. now, the folks with the highest stakes, the most to lose, number one on that list is the front-runner who will be on that stage, florida governor ron desantis. we expect and he certainly expects along with his team that he will be taking the majority of the arrows tonight. there are a couple of ways to look at this. with trump's absence, it is going to be a challenge for these candidates that while he's not there, he's going to be ever present because we know the hosts will be asking him questions, asking the candidates questions about the former president. we know that he's going to be counterprogramming the event. there is the looming indictment and he'll be turning himself in the following day. he's there, right? they're going to have to figure out how to create a contrast with him without alienating his base, which is something that as i've been on the campaign trail following these candidates, a lot of them have really struggled to find their footing. how do you attack him without attacking him? this is going to be the moment where they're confronted with that head on with a lot of eyes. the other way to look at this, though, is this is an opportunity to show voters what a post trump political world could potentially look like. for florida governor ron desantis, an opportunity to show what a non-trump front-runner looks like. this could be an opportunity, but it certainly will be a challenge to crawl out from under trump's shadow and see, you know, how much are they going to go after one another here as well, how many fireworks are we going to see tonight, jose? >> yeah. and, shaquille, what are republican voters say they're watching for tonight? >> reporter: this is republican voters, these are republican voters in this republican stronghold of waukesha. it is very republican in this state, they get a large chunk of their votes. i want you to listen directly from them to what they're looking for and watching for tonight. >> i am a trump supporter. i will not be backing christie. i know that for a fact. and so i really want to hear some of the fresh ideas. >> if i see that they have good stuff to offer, new changes in things that the latino community can benefit from, they have my vote. >> we'll have to see what positions they have an the economy and certainly on foreign affairs, especially with ukraine and the war. >> reporter: a common theme that i heard, jose, is that so many voters are looking to see who is the best candidate to take on joe biden in the general election. but they also say they want to see a candidate who talks about bringing people together, who can go above the clashes, the political clashes that you see all the time happening in washington, d.c. it is a sign and a signal to the candidates there is a line they have to walk even as they're thwarting those attacks and set that contrast on the debate stage, jose. >> and, jeremy, you've been so closely following how donald trump and those in the circle are watching as this primary unfolds. what about trump's decision to skip this debate? >> he believes, jose, that he doesn't need to be there. why subject himself to the slings and arrows of others and the unknowns on the -- that can occur on live television when you don't have to, when you're so far ahead? there is a lot of logic to that decision. people who are trump fans and people who are real trump critics both tell me they agree with trump's strategic decision here. now, the question becomes how many more of these debates can he afford to skip? he's indicated he may skip the second one, broadcast on fox business. if he gets to the third and still not there, i think that could cause some problems for him because what often happens in these debates is they can really make and break second tier candidates. i'm thinking back to 2012 when governor rick perry of texas had that infamous oops moment he forgot the names of the government agencies he wanted to eliminate or newt gingrich also in 2012 when he shot to the top and carried south carolina in the primary because he was such a formidable antagonist and edged out mitt romney. so, these, you know, these candidates who are not in first place really do see some benefit here if they can, you know, find an opening. and i think that's what worries the trump campaign and his advisers the most, is who rises to the top here in a way that could be threatening. >> yeah. i mean, jeremy, and this is an opportunity for this to be a post trump political world stage tonight. but how -- it just seems as though the former president is still controlling the oxygen, the talks and the discussions, even when he's not there. >> mm-hmm. and from our reporting in the "times," we have spelled out that fox plans to make trump center stage in this debate, regardless of whether or not he's physically there. they are going to use video of him, he's going to be the subject of the questions that the moderators ask the other candidates, so, he will very much be there, whether or not that's in -- we know it is not going to be in physical form, but he's going to continue to dominate the stage and you can imagine that the moderators are going to try to put candidates like desantis and vivek ramaswamy on the spot, how much can you tolerate, how much can you condone, what we know were highly unethical and really immoral things that he did in and around january 6th? i expect that to take up quite a bit of this debate because what the moderators are going to want to do is get the candidates on the record. what -- how much of trump's, you know, bad behavior are you willing to stand behind? >> dasha burns, shaquille brewster, jeremy peters, thank you so very much. >>> stay with msnbc for continuing coverage tonight, rachel maddow, joy reid and nicolle wallace lead expert analysis following the debate, all starting at 11:00 p.m. eastern, that's 8:00 p.m. pacific on msnbc and streaming on peacock. >>> up next, we'll hear from maui's fire chief about the latest efforts to help those who have lost everything in the deadly wildfires. >>> plus, why home sales in the u.s. are going way down. you're watching "jose diaz-balart reports" on msnbc. o. you're watching "jose diaz-balart rertpos" on msnbc. just between us, you know what's better than mopping? dasha burns is in des moines, iowa, following all of the action, though the action seems to be a little laid back right this second. dasha, talk about trump coming tomorrow, and what you have been seeing today besides a lazy cow. >> reporter: chris, you know that the iowa state fair is a critical political cattle call, see what i did there. and it is utterly important for these candidates to impress the voters. i'll stop now. no, but listen, this is why it's so important. you talked about the flipping of the burgers, you talked about the butter cow, these are, in fact, real cows, i can be witness to that. but at those fairside chats that governor kim reynolds has been holding with these candidates. mike pence, suarez, there are real voters showing up there to listen, and the vast majority of folks we have been talking to today, they tell us that they are undecided and they are open minded. and you know, the polling we have been seeing nationally, of course, trump is way ahead. in iowa, he's ahead as well, although that lead is narrower and softer, chris, and what do we mean by that, even folks that say they're supporting trump, say they're open to looking at other candidates, and that goes to what i'm sure you'll talk to later. the folks i talk to say they are in favor of what trump did in his administration, they like the guy, but a lot of them think that he might not necessarily be able to win a general election. take a listen to some of our conversations. >> i think he's way too divisive, and it's become the party of donald trump rather than the republican party, so i don't think he's my candidate. >> i like what he stands for. he needs to tone his rhetoric down. >> we need to find somebody who doesn't have a whole train load of baggage. >> i don't want you ragging on the next guy down the line or whatever, just tell me what you're going to do. and then i'll make up my mind if i like what you're saying. >> reporter: the other factor for trump in iowa is this feud with governor kim reynolds. he is one of the only candidates that is not sitting down with her for one of those fairside chats, and governor ron desantis, his team has been playing up that feud. they have been running ads here in iowa about that friction there, and trump, on the other hand, is going to be coming to iowa with some florida legislators that support him potentially trying to troll desantis at the same time, as they're going to be here together tomorrow, so potentially some explosive moments coming up at this wholesome state fair here, chris. >> thank you so much for that. okay, mark, you wrote in that vanity fair piece, iowa will be everything if trump wins it will be over. if he loses, it's a whole new ball game. then again, trump lost there before. he won the nomination, as you know, why do you think this time is different? >> well, it's different because he's a former president. as a former president running with the sort of support he appears to have right now, if he loses, i think it would be devastating. just showed exactly what i'm talking about, those look like ghost voters to me. in 2016, as you mentioned, people were afraid to say publicly that they were for trump. they were called trump silent voters. i think this time they are ghost voters, voters who appear to be for trump because it's very unpopular to say you're not for trump. he's the tribal chief, he's under attack, but the reality is these people understand, first of all, iowa plays very close attention, and they make their minds up very lately, and many of them, as dashang, literally until the last week, day and last hours, and then it could collapse, and the reason it will is because the kryptonite for trump is that he is a loser. he lost the '20 election, not just the reelection for presidency, but the senate and the house for the first time in almost a hundred years, since grover cleveland did the same thing almost a century ago, and the fact is that he's, with the additional legal weight that's on him, between now and election day is not going to get any better, and i think that the polls for the general election, not the primary, are increasingly going to show that donald trump would not be the best standard bearer for the republicans to beat joe biden. >> so i read your article, and all the way along, i'm going, oh, okay, i get it, i get it, i get it, and the journalist in me kicked in, and i said based on what? based on what do you think that so many people, you mentioned the poll, but donald trump has had this unbelievable knack of bringing pe
