dave carlin of our new york station wcbs takes a look at hoverboards that can be dangerous and illegal. >> reporter: you see the motorized hands-free self balancing boards about everywhere from parks to neighborhoods and too crowded manhattan sidewalks. some don't realize these are illegal in the city with users getting slapped with finds as high as 200 bucks a pop. they can range in price from a dollars to 200 each. what some are calling a gift is hazard. timothy cates said he only had his board three days before it burst into flames under his feet. >> i came down the sidewalk not even probably a hundred feet and it exploded. boom! >> reporter: he says he scrambled off as parts of the board went flying. >> i think the batteries, it was the batteries that blew up. if a kid a was to have that happen or imagine if it was in your house and it caught on fire like that. >> reporter: jessica horne doesn't have to imagine. she says her home in louisiana was destroyed after her son's new board caught fire. >> both wheels, like a firework. >> reporter: horne says it was charging on top of a mat

the nypd now looking for a cbs 2's dave carlin joins us dave. >> reporter: kristine, the way. some of them wore ski masks. suspects hid in bushes and jumped out before the victims had time to flee. all three armed robberies had common. police are looking for a group of teenagers. they say the boys targeted victims including some walking in pairs including this location monday night into tuesday. victims reported seeing at least four suspects, some with what looked like handguns. >> my mom used to always send me every article anytime would happen here. the park at night. >> reporter: will you stop? >> yes. >> i don't usually walk in the it's scary. >> reporter: police say 11:15 monday night, a park path near west 9 th street and west -- 96th street and west drive became a crime scene as one holding a black handgun. the victim a 33-year-old queens man, the robbers took his backpack with credit cards and two phones inside. about half-hour later the crime wave continued. around 11:49 p.m. inside the park alongside the reservoir near 91st street the victims were two women ages 45 a

cbs 2's dave carlin shows us what made them move. >> anything can happen if they want to take it out on you. >> reporter: elsa gilbert demands the city do something about this growing homeless encampment in washington square park. where's the enforcement and where's the outreach? >> it's getting worse. >> reporter: in this exclusive smartphone video, we see nypd officers arrive around 9 a.m. and tell the homeless they cannot sleep on the lawn of the here you see the homeless moving their belongings to the edge of a narrow walkway but they were not forced out. >> i'm not going to leave unless i'm in a police car. [ music ] >> reporter: joe is a homeless artist from boston a decade ago saying he was doing well as a drywall installer and tattoo artist but after a friend died he said he went into a deep depression spiraled into homelessness and doesn't speak to his parents much. he says for about eight month he and his friends lived about 10 blocks north in union square. but he says it was recent holiday activity that squeezed them out. here in union square take a look at just how jam-pa

cbs 2's dave carlin reports now from forest hills. >> reporter: investigators say the man in this subway surveillance video randomly targeted a 42-year-old man using an unknown sharp object the 71st avenue subway station platform then again as he followed him on a queens- bound "f" train. >> i don't understand why people be doing this. >> reporter: the shocker for riders we met is learning the victim said there was no argument, no contact at all leading up to sunday evening's bizarre attack by the 6-foot 200-pound man in his 20s with a cast on his right arm, goatee, black knit cap and plaid coat over a raiders t- shirt. initially the victim felt discomfort but he wanted to get away from the suspect who ran away at the union turnpike stop. police say in the moments after the attack, the victim didn't realize how badly he for help. discovering that only after he left the station. once home, the victim found four stab wounds on his back side and went from his house to the hospital. walk away. i don't keep close to no one. >> absolutely. we want to keep, you know, with her husband and sons k
