i'm amanda sanchez and i'm dave lawrence. the snow moved in fast some problems for people heading over the mountains. kolo 8 news now's rebecca kitchen is live at gold ranch with more on the traffic nightmare. officials with caltrans say interstate 80 at stateline is closed due to severe weather. all vehicles are being turned around at the gold ranch casino exit on i-80. they say semi trucks and four wheel drive vehicles are getting stuck in the snow, causing multiple clusters of cars to block sections of the interstate. it's not clear when i-80 will be back open. stay with kolo 8 news now intense storm system will bring wind, rain, and snow to the area through thursday. wind will be gusty, especially east of the sierra crest through the evening hours. rain will develop in the sierra and change over to snow below 7000' after sunset, and around the tahoe basin levels will drop to valley floors before sunrise, bringing the possibility of a few slushy inches for the morning commute. snow levels will rise on thursday and showers

i'm dave lawrence. let's go to dick stoddard with a look at the forecast. winds gusts have increased a bit faster than originally forecast this morning and are a bit stronger in the truckee/tahoe area already. we have received information reporting downed trees and power lines in the truckee area this morning and winds have gusted to near 55 mph around lake tahoe already. there should be a lull briefly this winds increase again as the upper jet lines up over the region this afternoon. pcpn will also begin to move into the the tahoe area late this afternoon. this may squelch the strongest winds...but for now we feel upgrading the advisory to a warning is prudent. the warning will run until the winter storm warning starts this evening...but the winds are likely to decrease before then. also of concern is zone 1...southern lyon county and mineral county. the strongest winds aloft impact that region later this afternoon and this evening. there is likely to be a period of down slope enhancement east of the pine nuts into smith valley and east of the wassicks now
