man was killed while walking right across the street near city hall. alex savage has more about the growing concern about pedestrian safety. >> reporter: dave good morningdly year here in san francisco with a surge in crashes and this the reason to eve. three people hit and killed by cars right near grove street and this is across the from city hall. a 38-year-old man stopped and cooperated with investigators. just before the crash, they say the victim was involved with somebody when he was in an argument and he was trying to cross in the middle of the block. police don't believe the driver in this case did anything wrong. >> based on what we have so far, the pedestrian went out of the crosswalk and that seemed to it be the primary factor in this collision. >> reporter: pedestrian defendants, 20 people were killed across the the city, and at last night's board of supervisors' meeting they said dealing with this troubling trend needs to be dealt with and some are calling for stepped up enforcement and other measures to be put in place and it will remain a critical issue and next week they will remain with the police commission and for everybody wanting t

identified a man killed in an avalanche in colorado, anthony seibert who is the grandson of one of the town's founder. it is the second death in colorado in the last two weeks. >>> and i'm daveren. we are looking temperatures which are climbing a little bit. after what we dealt with yesterday and the day before, we're seeing the numbers start to climb. still a bit windy though. a cold day today and chilly tonight with these wind chill temperatures down into the single digits, in fact a few below zero, but not nearly as cold. this is the warm air coming back, and it will eventually work its way into the northeast, but the cold air creating lake-effect snows. talking 30 inches or more of snow. an additional 20 inches forecast today. so a tremendous amount of snow with this cold air going over the great lakes. temperatures will drop into the upper 20s. we're getting some rain falling into this area here where the temperatures are down below freezing. that poses the risk for wintery weather across the southern plains. the temperature is just above freezing, not the case here across the southern plains, tonight oklahoma, texas, arkansas, and missouri looking at that mix forming.

dave was waiting on the platform at the santa clara train station when two people were hit by the northbound express train. >> one was taken away by the emergency personnel. >> reporter: an african-american man was killed and hispanic man seriously injured and taken to the hospital. >> the circumstances are unusual and we need to understand what went on between the two victims and whether there was something more than needs to be investigated and that's one of the things that we'll be able to talk with the second victim about when he comes out of surgery. >> reporter: some witnesses told us they think one of the victims might have been on a bicycle in or around the time of the accident. authorities are reviewing videotape recorded on the front of the train. >> in addition to the crew on the train there were 70 passengers. all of them are witnesses to this kind of thing. it is tragic and traumatic. >> a section of the track was shut down. hundreds of passengers were delayed. >> probably the last hour we have been driving around the freeways trying to find the right station to get to san francisco. >> reporter: we got an update on the man taken to the hospital. he suffered multiple compound fr

dave. yes. police had a potentially dangerous situation on their hands. they were told that the manprompted them to evacuate several homes and then they started negotiating with the suspect. here's that exclusive video of the 34-year-old suspect being carried from the back of the house. now, police say they had to use a taser and a k-9 to capture him. officers were called to a home on reagan street in east san jose because the man was there holding gasoline bottles threatening to burn down a house. when police arrived, they found the man had barricaded himself in the shed in the back of the home. he was holding a woman there against her will. police started negotiating with him and the woman was able to escape but we're told that that suspect ended up lighting the shed on fire. >> it did get intense, especially once the shed started to burn. k-9s were used. some force had to be used with the individual. there was also a threat of some other weapons in the shed that we were unsure of [screaming] >> reporter: you can hear the man yelling in pain as he was loaded into the ambulance. he

dave. well, police are looking for leads in this case to help them track down the man responsible for what the strip mall. i'm told it gets very busy in the afternoon. as you can see, that's a walgreens, pizza parlor, hair salon. this it happened in tront of -- this happened in front of the dance studio. police say at 4:30 monday afternoon, a woman was walking near harwood when a man approached her and punched her in the face. she fell to the ground and witnesses reported seeing the suspect running away towards harwood. investigators say the assault was unprovoked and appeared to be random. police know the incident sounds similar to around the nation where assailants punch unsuspecting people. sometimes it's videotaped. people are wonder if that's the case here and are disgusted. >> people who are desperate commit crimes. but this isn't in the category this is someone who is trying to earn points or the whole aspect of people videoing people hurting people doesn't seem to be any morality or regret or -- it's very upsetting. >> reporter: police are investigating they have not ruled out that
