dominic kaine, al jazeera. ♪ >>> i'm dave warren. live picture outside across new york shows the snow has cleared out, the sun is out, but the bitter cold air is here and just moving in. this is when the snow was heaviest. overnight last night, the snow intensifying off of the coast. these bands cleared out, and now we have the sunshine but the temperatures have dropped and will continue to drop, especially overnight tonight. these numbers could easily drop well below zero. six in boston, toronto six below, and when you factor in that gusty wind this is what it feels like, down to 10 to 15 degrees below for the wind chill. so bundle up if you are going to be out for a long time, you will really want to take precautions. the wind creating coastal flooding there across the northeast, and now we have another storm which is creating blizzard conditions across north dakota. this will bring in light snow, chicago sees these temperatures drop down to single digits, saturday and sunday. and then the actual air temperature 6 below on monday.

. ♪ >>> i'm meteorologist dave warren.emperatures are finally warming back up above freezing, barely. still very cold air across the northeast and eastern canada, and look what that has done to parts of niagara falls. these are pictures coming in, frozen because the temperatures down to 5 degrees and frigid air that really had an impact on the river there. and it does cause problems noting only in niagara, but along the delaware river the ice can dam up and cause floods not only upstream when the water is hitting the ice, but when the ice finally felts, you can get flooding, a flash flood watch is below where that water may go once the ice begins to melt and break up. so that's the biggest problem we're watching here. 31 up to 40 with light snow in new york, and 53 with some rain on saturday, and above 50 on sunday and monday, so the warm weather comes back. there is some lake-effect snow. it is winding down now but did dump a lot of snow in western new york. 29 degrees in new york and then climbing up to 62 in houston. wi

let's check in with dave warren to fine out if the firefighters will catch a break?> it does not like any break. we should be seeing snow really start to accumulate, and we're not getting that, which means that that snowy will eventually melt we're not going to have that moisture here in the next few months. the drought monitor has now expanded. but it is the snow that is the big problem. this is a little bit of snow in the mountains. this is the visible satellite. just a little bit of snow. if you compare that snow to april 1st which is normally what they compare it to, 4% of the average snow you see on april 1st, northern part of the state, 8%, 10%, not much snow and that means we won't have much moisture in the next few months unless the weather pattern changes. >>> today representatives from the holy seat testifying in front of a un committee in geneva, investigating that the church allowed child abuse to happen and even protecting pedophile priests. >> reporter: this was a very public forum. the session opened with a statement from the vatican delegation. >> the

meteorologist dave warren is here.will you please explain the new term of art, whatever it is, polar vortex? >> i didn't make it up. it means very cold air, polar, up near the poles, which is very cold near the arctic, north pole, spinning is this vortex and every so often you get the spin of cold air moving rapidly to the south. this is where you get the vortex spinning. located right over the great lakes, bitter cold air, bringing in colder air, increasing the wind because it's a powerful storm and that will drop the wind chills. so it's around here and will continue to move to the east. that core of cold air, notice how the colors change a little bit. it can't stay that color for long. wednesday and thursday it's over the great lakes and pushing up over new england. still 24 to 48 more hours of this bitter-cold air. 12 below minneapolis, 12 below chicago. that wind has picked up. here is what it feels like down to 40 below in minneapolis and chicago. quickly you get frostbite or hypothermia. >> be careful! thank you

meteorologist dave warren is here with the much anticipated news of this warm up, dave? >> meteorologist: yes, we would just have to wait a little bit to overnight tonight we'll see these temperatures are not getting colder, and not dropping too much. normally see the numbers go down around this time of night. these are the cold temperatures. we have to look at the last two days to call that warm. 25, and 9:00 tonight down to 21. look at these numbers. not moving much. really not dropping. you wake up tomorrow morning with the temperatures in the 20s. but here comes the much anticipated warm up climbing up freezing. the cold air is clearing out. high pressure moving off the coast. the warm air returns from the south. this is the pattern change that we're looking at so we'll begin to thaw out. we have a winterly mix across the southern plains not only tonight, we'll look at that with the radar, but in the forecast there is more to come for friday in iowa and chicago. we'll have more in the forecast when we come back. >> thank you. today is north korea's leader kim jong-un

al jazeera, chicago. >>> i'm dave warren. we're industristill tracking th. two areas of low pressure combine to one, and that will intensify overnight tonight. so that area of snow in the middle, that will fill in and become heavy. certainly cold enough for it. 26 degrees in new york, 39 in washington, d.c. just above the freezing mark there, but once this storm really winds up and intensifies, it brings in colder air and you will feel that by the end of the week. two areas of low pressure and in the middle nothing. that will change, though. by this evening mainly overnight tonight the storms combine to one. this area shrinks and heavy snow really starts to develop by midnight overnight tonight and throughout the night to tomorrow morning. you wake up to heavy snow. this will have banding with it, very heavy snow because the wind coming in from the ocean and wind coming in from the north and comes together and creates a heavy band of snow around the storm. it goes from new england down from new jersey towards philadelphia, delaware and maryland. seeing where

dave warren is here to tell us it is all ending. >> the snow and ice is ending. the temperatures will stay down. it will keep the ice on the roadways. it may melt during the day but refreeze overnight. the temperatures will be down below the freezing mark across the southeast. this is the last few hours. you saw the rain and snow clearing out. temperatures remain in the teens. but where are they headed? computer forecast shows that 7, 8:00 dropping back down tonight. thursday morning still below freezing, but by 11:00 maybe getting warmer. so it is cold today. maybe touching the freezing mark around atlanta. maybe climbing briefly. but ill will stay below freezing overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. 32 and up to 42 and. it does climb. saturday and sunday, the warm air comes back. but that comes with a few clouds. looks like the precipitation is holding off for now. but you have to wait another 24 hours after least before the temperature starts to climb. here is this cold air coming in from the north. low pressure up around hudson bay. but a pattern change her

and for more on how the fire season is actually shaping up, let's get over to meteorology dave warrenyeah, and we are certainly looking at the know pack. no storm are in the forecast. it's a severe drought. the latest drought monitor with the visible satellite picture shows that there are no clouds this white area is the snow in the mountains and that number that comes in, look at this compared to the april 1st average, april 1st is the key dade because that's when everything starts to melt and goes in to the streams and reservoirs, it's 10% southern california here the mountains there, 8% and 4% of the average snow that you have on april 1st. they are taking measurements so it's well below average. and certainly no snow is expected here in the next two weeks at least. there is los angeles, and there is the fire you can see the smoke on the visible satellite picture blowing right over los angeles with those dry santa ana wins, now, the satellite shows this large ring of clouds around southwestern u.s. and that is the high pressure center, that's the flow of the storms going up in to c

let's bring in meteorologist dave warren. >> we can't get storms tracking over the area. all the storms are going flow the northern plains, another spin. a quick area of low pressure moving from the north-west to south-east dumping snow. then we turn to the north-east. that's where we are now. rain, colder air coming in. comes in behind the storms, getting one after the other. we are looking at another by the end of the week. here coles the cold air by monday, tuesday and wednesday. another arctic blast. there is the core of that cold air over the north and south dakota, and miles per hour. temperatures dropping below zero. there's another shot of cold air, coming with a gusty wind. low pressure off the coast turping the gusty wind. it tracks over the eastern u.s. out west dry weather conditions. not really getting storms there, where we need the moisture. these are the highs, with the wind shil 20, 30 or 40 degrees below zero. the cold air coming into chicago after light snow on monday. tuesday and wednesday temperatures down into the single digits. a hot of cold air on

that's next. >> meteorologist: i'm dave warren.e're seeing drive weather out west, cold weather and stormy weather to the east. right in the middle is this area of snow that is pushing to the north. accompanied by gusting winds with wind gusts over 75 mph. even though the snow is just light you'll get reduced visibility with this blowing snow. high pressure out west. storms going up into canada and going down through the dakotas. but the extreme drought persists cannot get any moisture in this area with that high in place. this is normally the time of year you start to see the snow accumulate and set up the stage for that melting in april and may which goes into the creeks and streams. we're not getting that and we'll continue to stay dry. the cold air across the east. with this pattern here it looks like the track will be just a little too far off the coast to give us any rain or snow significant rain or snow across the mid-atlantic states and up through new england. you can see over the next few days there will be storm but it's

more on the story as it progresses, but we want to go right now to dave warren to find out about the dry, scorched earth out there that they have to contend with. >> yes, normally, we would see the snowfall accumulate and then melt and provide a lot of moisture, and we're not getting it. we have red flag warnings, and the winds are picking up with the santa ana. very dry and the humidities are low and the temperatures warm. this weather pat not is not changing. you see the storm tracks going well up into canada and not affecting southern california. and the snow should be in the mountains, but we're not getting it. it's going up and around this area of high pressure. this is out west. to the east, low pressure with the pattern here, the disturbances around the boundary here, with the cold air and this gives snow and wind and shots of cold air. off the coast. light snow on thursday and friday, and then another disturbance coming down through north dakota and midnight and then through the midwest, light snow, but another shot of cold air behind it. and reinforcing the weather pattern.

dave warren is here. i heard something from the doctor there that i think is important as we turn to you and weather as we look at conditions on the board behind you here, that layers are not enough when temperatures are this cold. >> meteorologist: it's the wind, too, it just whips that cold air. the temperatures drop, and we're almost done. the polar air that we've been talking about really cannot stay this cold this long. as it goes further south it warms up every day. the temperatures are not quite as cold, but it's still windy. the wind chills are still a good 10 to 30 degrees below, low pressure to the north, high pressure building in from the south, this is the mid-atlantic states and the northeast. this is the wind in between. creating gusting wind, and it drops the wind chill. this is overnight to tomorrow morning. you can wake up to these numbers. maybe not quite as cold, but still below zero. 15 to 30 below in the highlighted areas. we still have the wind chill advisories and warnings in effect

. >> i'm meteorologist dave warren. we're talking about dry weather or cold winter weather. we'll start here. right in the northern plains where this initial storm is. bitter cold arctic air moving south. and 35 in home had a, an omaha. the cold air will move south, and the timing of this looks like it will be shaping up until late tonight and tomorrow as this front moves south all the way through to the mississippi valley and the southeast, and then tuesday morning we see this develop and rapidly intensify. this is happening off the coast of north carolina. and we see these storms work their way north. it's moving south and east, just light snow moving to the coast. the storm moves up the coast, takes a lot of snow with it. so it really depends on where the storm develops and how quickly it intensifies. right now four to six inches of snow through this band, heavier in the mountains and heavier towards boston and it's a combination of how far north the moisture can make it and where the cold air, and that will be shaping up right over northern virginia, baltimore and philad

. ♪ >>> i'm meteorologist dave warren, a few different colors here with the warning map.have high-wind watches and warnings. the pink color is a blizzard warning and a blizzard watch is that green color. all of this in the northern plains another impulse moving south. there goes a light area of snow over the great lakes as the wind picks up, you get blowing snow and reduced visibility. you see these temperatures only into the single digits. been colder but will is another shot of bitter cold arctic air. it is climbing up to 29 bismarck. it really drops to the teens and below zero in far go, as the wind picks up. this storm will push east. there is some more snow moving into north dakota. it is still dry out-west, and the temperatures are dropping a bit along the mid-atlantic coast. 40 in washington, 44 in new york. but here is this cold air that will continue to push east. dense fog in philadelphia, washington, and detroit, climbing, and that fog is beginning to burn off so the visibility will continue to improve there. temperatures just below 40. and now some light snow

hot in lappet right now are the tempers of the people who were stuck in the cars overnight, and dave warren joins us it could get dicey again tonight. >> meteorologist: that's right it melts in the day and refreezes at night and some places did not even climb above freezing there. the front that pushes through with the cold air behind it has slowed down a bit. temperatures now 20s. 32 in shreveport, and the temperatures may try to climb up to the freezing mark. we go to the computer forecast to show that, but then the sun goes down, you lose that energy and anything that melts could refreeze again tonight. 16 in atlanta. 28 in new orleans. the freezing rain line is right here moving through the panhandle of florida. it will eventually move up and stay warm. thursday afternoon teaches are climbing in the 30s. 63 on sunday. so the warm air comes back and these low temperatures stay above freezing, but not until saturday and sunday. there's this pattern. it looks to be changing a little bit, though. that's good news for the west coast. the storm coming down from the northern utah bringing mois

. >> i'm meteorologist, dave warren, and we have two areas of snow and rain. snow coming together and organizing, but when it does, look for the snow to get very heavy and fill into that area, which was clear. the temperatures are cold enough, but they could be dropping. this could be light, fluffy snow, and not the heavy snow that we're talking about. cold air is in place x. it will be even colder by tomorrow once the storm starts to clear out. two areas of low pressure. baltimore, washington, philadelphia, new york, seeing light know in boston. but by this evening, 3:00, 4:00, they start to get organized and come together. and the snow starts to fill in. by 10:00, to 11:00, the snow is heavier with the darker blue color, indicating the heavy snow. there's the snow, and you get a band of snow on i-95 because the wind coming in from the north. we could see a band of heavy snow in and around the storm. and that pretty much goes from boston to new york to new jersey to philadelphia. that could be where the heavy snow occurs. the snow by midnight tonight, and by

. >>> and i'm dave warren. we are looking temperatures which are climbing a little bit.er what we dealt with yesterday and the day before, we're seeing the numbers start to climb. still a bit windy though. a cold day today and chilly tonight with these wind chill temperatures down into the single digits, in fact a few below zero, but not nearly as cold. this is the warm air coming back, and it will eventually work its way into the northeast, but the cold air creating lake-effect snows. talking 30 inches or more of snow. an additional 20 inches forecast today. so a tremendous amount of snow with this cold air going over the great lakes. temperatures will drop into the upper 20s. we're getting some rain falling into this area here where the temperatures are down below freezing. that poses the risk for wintery weather across the southern plains. the temperature is just above freezing, not the case here across the southern plains, tonight oklahoma, texas, arkansas, and missouri looking at that mix forming. this is an area of ice that you could wake up to tomorrow morning. de

. ♪ >>> i'm meteorologist dave warren.re following some light snow a clipper that quickly clears out of the area. a little bit of snow to north dakota south dakota and minnesota. a little heavier snow is expected here but the wind picking up behind this. there's a fire danger across the central portion of the country, and the wind brings in colder air. there is the snow forecast you see today it's just through the great lakes and then it will lift north not continuing to push south. this is the pattern here big trough of low-pressure in the east. and it keeps the dry weather across the southwest. should be getting rain now. that's normally when you see the most rain here this month. but we're seeing dry weather and fire conditions there. so not the best news. 51 in los angeles, temperatures into the 20s, and that colder air comes down behind the snow. here is rain in the mid-atlantic straights. the radar tracks the rain clearing out, the back edge already moving through western pennsylvania. ahead of the rain it's warm. we

. >> i'm dave warren.his doesn't look like much now but this will come together and create a big storm, intensifying across the coast of north carolina. this is bitter cold arctic air, zero in bismarck, 46 in only haw, all pushing to the south. this cold front dropping south as it runs into the warmer air, it best fiez, fuels storm and a lot of moisture here right off the coast. watch it develop early tuesday, low pressure just off the coast of north carolina, here is the snow and the colder air. it intensifies tuesday afternoon and evening. that's when the snow will be heaviest. really pulling in moisture and a lot of it off the coast. watch, the snow amounts will be a little higher than we're exepg throughout the night tuesday and wednesday. wednesday and thursday it clears out but there's some cold air coming in behind this. the snow amount is what we'll expect. late morning and throughout evening four to six inches of snow, heavier amounts just off the coast where the storm intensifies, getting a lot o

. >> i'm meteorologist dave warren. we're tracking the development of a western storm along the east coast and starting to see snow in north and south dakota. and then we get that storm developing. it's starting to develop now. temperatures really drop in north dakota, fargo at 1 degree. that's it. 16 in minneapolis. 43 in omaha and warmer to the shout. there is that front. it will continue to move south monday and tuesday. and right along the boundary, you have this storm developing. timing looks like late tuesday morning we see storms developing and here is snow in the afternoon. once it begins to come down we'll see snow accumulate in west virginia, philadelphia and you will the way up 95. early snow tuesday night early wednesday bringing moyes and the storm will intensify. it looks like its happening too far south to give a tremendous amount of snow to new england and the northeast. it looks to be developing farther west with snow along i-95. the amounts four to six inches, this band may be heavier closer to the oce

for forecasts on the call, here is dave warren >> yes, we have seen plenty of these surges of arctic air coming in. we are looking at another. the orange colour indicates the windchill is below zero, dangerous in some areas, 20, 30, 40 below zero, as cold as 40 below for the windchill. a large area seeing temperatures below zero with the air temperature 15 below, 7 below and minneapolis and fargo. one in omaha and fargo. when you factor in the wind, almost 40 below for a windshil. that's dangerous levels. when it gets this low you get frost bite if you are not bundled up. take precautions if you need to head outside. it's a large area of bitter cold wind chills. not quite made it to the east coast. we are watching the front push from the west to the east. temperatures in washington and 39. there's the front. this is the actual real feel temperature, the windchill hour by hour. by 4 o'clock it's down to 9 below. 15-18 below in philadelphia and washington. the cold air is moving east. by tonight the temperatures will be dropping throughout the day. single digit wind chills that could b

now meteorologist dave warren, take a look from space, and you can see the snow on the ground, not moving that whitish color that's the snow, these are the clouds that brought the snow has pushed off the coast, getting a little chance to melt here with some sunshine, and the temperatures are up too, climbing above freezing and should stay there, at least overnight tonight, and then throughout the next few days getting a few degrees warmer each day, it may not refreeze tonight, but still be careful on the roadways. 36 in atlanta, and alabama 46 new orleans, so the temperatures are climbing a bit, and now we with are talking about the storm out west, needed rain and snow. across california and the southwest, have to get that snow up there until april 1st when it started to melt, and that feed as lot of the reservoirs way below average, so we are welcoming this storm here. another area of low pressure bringing some light snow to the northern plains. that will be followed by a brief drop in temperatures you can see that here with the temperatures dropping to zero, in fargo, six in bismark. wi

for more, let's bring in meteorologist dave warren. i know, don't shoot the messenger, right?arm air ahead of the storm and cold air behind it. the temperatures will be dropping once we get rid of the rain. the rain has not made it yet to the northeast. it will eventually, overnight later today and overnight tonight. meantime, the temperatures continue to warm up and this is a problem because of all the ice formed on the rivers could melt, you get flooding above an ice jam and flash flooding once that ice mets. a number of creeks and rivers seeing flood warnings and watches for that reason. we have that ice warming could melt or cause flooding on the rivers and creeks here. now, here's all the rain across the southeast, and that front approaching from the west. that behind it is some light snow, just light snow with this colder air coming in. that not cold, frigid air, but you will notice a drop in temperatures from the northern plains today. before that cold air makes it, here'sed rain coming in southeast today, overnight tonight along the mid atlantic states. by tomorrow, th

. >> okay, we'll get the latest on the storm, the forecast to the south and we'll check in with dave warren. >> we're still looking at this front that came through is off the coast now but it stalled out right over the southeast. so we still have winter weather, ice coming down. not over atlanta but farther south. high pressure keeping that cold air in place, but this is where the front has stalled out. over the cold that is the rain falling into the air below freezing, so this is the mixed area. look how it slowly works its way south an then it stops and fills in, and works its way back north just a little bit. an area of low pressure moving along keeping this moisture in place, keeping that rain, snow and ice continuing to fall there across the southeast. the rain will move through florida, just off the coast. still some moisture coming down. maybe some nicks coming down south carolina, and it continues to push off the coast through the evening. the temperatures in the evening anything that is melted could easily refreeze as it drops down overnight. here are the numbers that we're looking

let's get over to dave warren who is tracking this latest arktd blast for us -- arctic blast for us, dave. >> right now through north dakota, south dakota, minnesota, very accommodate wind chills for -- very cold wind chills. now the bitter cold wind chills is the problem as this front moves through. cold air plus the wind combined 40 or 50 below in this area. this is the wind chill warning not quite as cold but down to about zero, the wind chill better, all the way up to the northern plains. that's where the cold air is now. where it is going to be headed, it will be moisture, warm air falling into the cold air. this could either be sleet or freezing frain developing throughout tomorrow morning's rush hour. through the carolinas and through southern georgia and right along the gulf coast in new orleans. ice accumulation throughout the day tomorrow as far south as florida, northern florida. so freezing rain will be the biggest problem there and we'll talk about the deep freeze continuing, tony. >> dave, thank you. a potentially landmark case in los angeles, students matter is challeng

. >> i'm meteorologist, dave war warren, and we're still talking about the windchills and this is ascold as it will be in the next few days. it will try to get warm tore the south here. there's warm air coming up from the gulf. but it's hitting the cold air, and that's where the battle ground is off of the gulf and the cold air coming in from the north. the temperatures are below freezing but above that, we're seeing temperatures above freezing, so now we're seeing rain before it hits or freezes when it hits. freezing rain, dealing with the pink area where it's cold and snow and all rain in the middle. you're getting the ice accumulation. next few hours, it will continue, but the back edge of this is starting to move to the coast and off the coast by wednesday morning. still snow coming down, but it's generally ending throughout the morning tomorrow. still rain and mix lingering in florida by wednesday afternoon and evening. and by thursday, it's just off the coast. there's significant snow in north and south carolina. the rain in the south, right in the middle, you see that mix. we'
