judging me now, dave weigel, political reporter for slate.com and msnbc analyst. that back drop is looking mighty familiar, how are you doing? >> very well. thanks for asking. >> excellent. it was not enough to give that light bulb freedom of choice act shout out once, bachmann also gave a shout out after the debate, take a listen. >> i never thought that in congress we'd have to introduce the light bulb freedom of choice act that you brought up tonight. >> i introduced it, it's what's wrong with washington. you have the federal government telling you what light bulb you can use and can't use, that's why i introduced the bill. when i'm president, you can buy any light bulb you can buy. >> dave weigel, when did this become the rallying cry? >> i really sort of towards the end of 2010, along with the rise of the tea party, this was something tea party groups started to focus on and bring attention to. she introduced the bill before it became an issue when she reintroduced it earlier in the spring. on the campaign trail, she brings it up in every speech. having seen h

joining me now, dave weigel, dave, how are you doing tonight? >> i'm doing well. thanks for having me. >> if fluoride in the water as a communist plot is one end of sort of extreme views and gold standard and the f.e.d. is in the kind of acceptable area of sort of right views, where is repealing the 16th amendment? >> repealing the 16th amendment fits snugly into that framework. conservatives have talked for a long time about what they call the constitutional exile. perry in this book says what radio hosts believe that basically the progressives hoodwinked a lot of americans in 1913. the new deal did even worse and to really get americans liberated the way the founders wanted us to be liberated, we need to repeal all of it. it was actually kind of honest in the book to say we need to do this. >> the honesty is o whether governor perry holds the views, campaign released a statement. the 16th amendment instituting a tax has exploded into tax rates and rules for the american workers. it goes on to say we can't undo more than 70 years of taxation overnight. what do yo

dave weigel of slate.com, thanks for joining us. >> thank you. >>> coming up, the recession generation and why everyone should worry about them programs. you made the point with texas and the jobs creation there, those are public jobs, we had vision lack for us in this moment? >> i think it's broader than just the president. i think it's a democratic party issue as well. the '50s and '60s, so it's both a lack of will in terms of both parties as well as lack of vision, but i will say young people do have a vision. i was just in hyde park, new york, this weekend talking to 200 student leaders as part of the roosevelt institute campus network. 10,000 students across the country, they have ideas, they have policy programs that they'd like to implement, so the ideas and vision are there for this recession generation, but their voices aren't being heard in the same way. >> so if we're cutting public sector jobs, if we're cutting union rights to organize, and if we're raising a recession generation, what does that mean for the country? if you had the biggest, broadest vision, what does it loo
