we're told to davenport. so we're talking about a long stretch of the coast here of california. and as you're looking at our seismograph, you're like, okay, that looks pretty big. yes, it is. and that's because that one is placed here in the bay area. it can feel this movement across california. so we always are monitoring these movements across the bay area and california for that matter. just to bring you the up to date information and what you need to know. so we heard about that earthquake that happened about 1044 this morning. and then we've seen several aftershocks after several shocks, several aftershocks. we're also seeing those as well. right now, what you're looking at, i was just trying to monitor what we're seeing on our screen as well. this is the warning with a lot of people are seeing on their televisions. that's right. so this is from terry mcsweeney. he lives up in marin county. this is the alert that went out on the tv screens this morning. as soon as that earthquake struck. while this was happening, people also got alerts straight to their cell phones because

as far north as eureka and that area, all the way down to davenport. that tsunami warning has been canceled, but a source. of course, there are still some evacuation orders that we haven't heard have been lifted. just yet in berkeley, as well as fremont. but we can tell you that bart now is in full service. they did pause or halt service for just a moment as well as the transbay tube, but we can tell you, bart service is now back operating as it would be. yeah, and operations at sfo seem to be completely unimpacted. there were no flights that were delayed or nceled because of that. scott mcgrew was checking on that for us earlier this morning. we can tell you that the san francisco zoo did cancel and close for the day. so you're seeing those planes moving along there at the at sfo, at the airport, and you know, the tsunami warning was really a large swath of coastline that went from the oregon border all the way down to davenport in santa cruz county. but the good news is, now that we don't expect to see widespread damage because of any wave activity,

as it hits the coast around davenport, you get this. what we refer to as a hook echo. you can see a clear signature on here where you have got the classic form where the atmosphere is rotating and it is rotating so much the radar is picking up and it is able to display it. where the real problem happened was here. right about 1:10, right to scotts valley. this is where we were experiencing the tornado. we will wait to hear more from the national weather service in terms of intensity. by the way, to go all the way to 5:00 a.m., that is the intense line of thunderstorms , which ruled over san francisco this morning. that is the one that for very good reason the national weather service had to put a tornado warning out because of that. that is another hook echo. now, this held together out here. you have got the radar signature. when you see that as a meteorologist at the national radar service, you don't have any eyewitness confirmation way out there but the radar is telling you there is rotation that can likely reach the ground. increased over the northwest corner of sa

down the california coastline to santa cruz, right around ten miles just northwest of santa cruz in davenport is where we did have that warning in effect. and since then, we've seen over 200 aftershocks and all of these up to about 3.7. we do have a dozen or more above 4.0. so we're going to continue to see these aftershocks for at least another full week. and the reason why it is focused in on this area, you have to imagine three separate plates. the north american plate, the gorda plate and the pacific plate. they all kind of like fight and try to gather their own territory there. and then we have the san andreas fault that streams up the coastline. then takes a bend, a little bit of a jog around cape mendocino. and that's where all the activity is now. meanwhile, we have a local forecast to talk about, and the big change this weekend that you need to know. that's coming up in a matter of minutes, mike. >> all right. we'll see you soo, roberta. thank you. and just a reminder here to download the fox local app to your phone and smart tv. there you can find the latest updates on the northern

the warning was for coastal communities from the oregon border all the way down to davenport in santa cruz county. that's about 300 miles south of where the earthquake hit. but the tsunami warning was downgraded about an hour after the quake. and as you can see, surfers did not wait very long to get back into the water. this is not the first time santa cruz has been under a tsunami threat. back in 2011, it did hit after a 9.0 magnitude quake hit japan that triggered a tsunami that made it all the way to the santa cruz harbor. those waves did more than $100 million in dama. that was i remember that. it was intense. yes, it was shocking. it was so surprising. those waves moving all the way. i remember that tsunami and earthquake was devastating in japan. yeah. and like the rest of you, i got the alerts. i turned on the tv, and i learned something today, which i didn't know, which is. this is a magnitude seven earthquake. that's a big earthquake. but in terms of triggering a tsunami, that's actually on the low end of what can cause a tsunami, it's. you said the alaska 1 in 1964. that was

morning off the coast of humboldt county, triggering a tsunami warning spanning from the coast of davenport in santa cruz county, all the way to douglas and lane counties in oregon, and impacting at least 5.3 million people in california. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the earthquake was so powerful that, according to the u.s. geological survey, more than 1.3 million people live close enough to feel it. fortunately, there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries, but there were reports of damage like broken water mains windows and about 10,000 people in humboldt county were without power. that's according to state senator mike mcguire. >> so let's take a look at how this morning's events unfolded at 1044. that big earthquake hit off the coast of humboldt county, initially reported as a 6.0. the usgs revised the magnitude to 7.0. then, just five minutes later, at 10:49 a.m, the national weather service issued a tsunami warning stretching from the oregon border nearly down to santa cruz. the tsunami was predicted to hit san francisco at 12:10 p.

one of the things that i think could have happened out along the coast, we had something down by davenport and something up by the golden gate park. there's a thing called a microburst, and i think there's a real potential for that when you have this big convective cells, those big thunderstorms we had, the air gets pushed, pulled in and rises and gets really cold. it cools a lot of enough air. if the cell is big enough, you get enough air up there, super cools, and then it gets heavy cold air sinks and it comes straight down. look up microburst. google it sometime. it's awesome. i mean, some of the some of the debris that is created from that. so it's this flat straight down and then it shoots out at the sides. and part of me i look at that debris field in golden gate park, just the cameras there. and it looked, it looked a little bit like it could have been something like that. but either way, we do have more weather coming. we've got fog right now. the fog. i mean, if you look at this picture right here, live picture, this is golden gate bridge. this is a north kind of a northeast wind.

you can see the line from san francisco all the way down through davenport. so i wouldn't be surprised if we have some other signatures on the radar that indicate that the possibility of some winds over 40, 50, 60 miles an hour. so there is indication of rotation there into san francisco. this could damage roofs, windows, vehicles. so damage is likely here. and so through the next 20 minutes or so, the peninsula even up through marin county there you can see those purples and down through the peninsula into the south bay, the santa cruz mountains. we're looking at torrential downpours of some flooding rains, debris flying around. and as this continues to push through the bay, we've got heavy rain into the east bay. walnut creek, moraga not sure if this signature is going to stay together as it moves across the bay, but there has been waterspouts reported offshore, and now this has to move over the water too. and we've got strong signatures here that are with us throughout the next 30 to 40 minutes into the north bay, though, much lighter rain. you had your he

up and down the coastline from southern oregon, down toward davenport. that magnitude seven quake and that tsunami alert issued so here's a closer look at the epicenter. as you can see, just off the north coast. and as we take a look here, these are all of the aftershocks. in fact, i could put a box around all these aftershocks to give you an idea of just how active it has been since the main event. and so far, about 199 reports. these are of quakes over 2.0. so a lot of them are very small and still some a lot of activity, as you would expect with the magnitude 7.0. as far as the potential damage for this portion of northern california. tom vacar he was in this small town of fortuna and then here's ferndale. then, just to give you perspective, here is arcata. that's where cal poly humboldt is and mckinleyville is where you fly into the airport. so that's where we are noticing some of the damage across parts of the north coast, especially to the south of eureka. so there is the magnitude 7.0. this is the actual usgs map. you can report what you were feel

it stopped at davenport. that's about ten miles north.ut we talked with a resident who says the power was cut by the harbormaster as a precaution. he says the harbor called him to tell him to prepare to evacuate his 40 foot sailboat. >> typically, i stay with the boat on anything, but when she called, it got you to thinking, well, maybe i should probably go ahead and go to high ground. so i just got in my truck and went up to the cliffs and watched the water and saw everything was okay, and then checked my phone and saw that the governor had released the warning. and here i am. >> he says he's thankful the only thing he lost was a couple of hours of his time back in 2011, santa cruz did get damaged by a tsunami. remember this? that's the video you're watching here. a quake in japan triggered a tsunami that brought a two foot wave to the santa cruz harbor. it caused $100 million in damage. >> can't believe that was 2011. i know it doesn't feel that long ago. well, two years ago, in december of 2022, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake caused major

and this is why the national weather service did issue that tsunami alert all the way into davenport, just ten miles northwest of santa cruz. but since then, we've seen over 200 aftershocks, and we have felt them mainly around this area right here. that encompasses the eureka area into fresh water and of course, into fortuna and also in ferndale. and you know what? we're going to fill these sizable aftershocks for days to come. and for the most part, many of these have been over 4.0. keep in mind, we do have right here three different plates towards the extreme northern portion of the state of california. here you have the san andreas fault and it kind of jogs, takes a left bend, turn right around cape mendocino and this is the most active structure area for earthquake activity in the entire united states of america. so it's not unusual to hear or feel the earthquakes in these areas, to see a 7.0 is a little out of the ordinary. we're going to continue to update you on the earthquakes, the tsunami, and also your local weather forecast. when will begin to cloud back up again. and mike,

davenport, just 10 miles northwest of santa cruz all the way down through areas right here along the an offshore quake. great here. and when you do, especially c quakes a little bit further up in the pacific northwest. they do tend to come along with that higher risk. of a tsunami warning itself when we have quakes a little bit closer back here at home because of the nature of all for our fault line itself. we don't tend to see that tsunami risk quite as high. but this quake did occur several hours to the north of the bay resulting in that shaking, especially being felt in the north bay offshore of humboldt county itself. as i just told james, a moment ago, we did see status upgraded too 8, 7, 7, magnitude. yeah. and it's still on the phone with us is jason, our executive producer up in santa rosa where he had firsthand experience of the shaking. >> this just so we're all clear happened on the mendocino fault. it looks like it's following right along that. and the jason lee bring it back into the conversation this morning because for folks just joining us, i know my wife texted me. s

some 5 million people under this tsunami warning from davenport, california so that's south of san francisco all the way up to lane line oregon. so that's quite a bit of that coastline. and it looks like the expected time for this tsunami activity it ranges but started about 15 minutes ago if you will. but but 5 million people under this warning. how worried should they be well certainly they should be aware anytime that we have a tsunami warning. >> that is something to take very seriously. so i would give anyone the advice to, you know heed the advice from noaa, from the tsunami warning to, you know, stay away from the from the shoreline. be. be aware that you may need to evacuate and the reason that these warnings get issued is because there is a chance from an earthquake like this one that happens beneath the the ocean, that we may have a tsunami. so certainly being aware and knowing that a tsunami warning is in effect for that stretch of coastline, very important for everyone right now. >> we just heard our chad myers telling people to stay away from the coastline. is that the best piec
